Abstract

Spinal tissue distraction devices that include a member which has a pre-deployed configuration for insertion between tissue layers and a deployed configuration in which the member, by change of configuration, forms a support structure for separating and supporting layers of spinal tissue.

Claims (26)

1. A method for supporting and/or distracting tissue layers comprising:

advancing a one-piece elongated distraction device to a location between tissue layers, the distraction device initially being in a generally straight configuration;

forming the distraction device as it advances between the tissue layers from the generally straight configuration into a generally helical configuration comprising a plurality of coils around an axis intersecting the tissue layers, the helical configuration including a distal coil at one end for contacting one tissue layer and a proximal coil at the other end for contacting another tissue layer, the distraction device having sufficient axial extent between the distal and proximal coils to contact and support the tissue layers in a space-apart position and/or to distract the tissue layers, and

stabilizing the distraction device between the tissue layers to limit relative movement of adjacent coils in a direction transverse to the axis.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the stabilizing includes introducing flowable cement or filler between the tissue layers in contact with the distraction device and allowing the flowable material to harden.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the coils of the distraction device define an inner space and providing cement or filler comprises introducing cement or filler into the inner space.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein providing cement or filler comprises injecting cement or filler between coils and into the inner space.

5. The method of claim 2 wherein the distraction device includes a channel and providing cement or filler comprises injecting cement or filler into the channel.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein the distraction device includes a plurality of apertures in communication with the channel and wherein the cement or filler exits through the apertures.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the apertures are located on one side of the distraction device when the distraction device is in the helical configuration.

8. The method of claim 6 wherein the apertures includes a plurality of slots spaced therealong.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the slots direct the bone filler into an inner space defined by the coils of the distraction device.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein adjacent coils include interfering surfaces that resist lateral displacement of one coil relative to an adjacent coil.

11. The method of claim 10 in which at least one coil and an immediately adjacent coil having engaging shoulders that resist lateral displacement of the coils relative to one another.

12. The method of claim 10 in which at least one coil and an immediately adjacent coil having engaging convex and concave surfaces that assist in maintaining the implant in a helical configuration.

13. A method for supporting and/or distracting tissue layers comprising:

advancing an elongated distraction device to a location between tissue layers, the distraction device initially being in a generally straight configuration;

forming the distraction device as it advances between the tissue layers from the generally straight configuration into a generally helical configuration comprising a plurality of coils around an axis intersecting the tissue layers wherein coils are in contact with an immediate adjacent coil, the coils defining an inner space, the helical configuration including a distal coil at one end for contacting one tissue layer and a proximal coil at the other end for contacting another tissue layer, and

stabilizing the distraction device between the tissue layers by introducing flowable bone filler material into the inner space and in contact with the coils and allowing the bone filler material to harden.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein adjacent coils include interfering surfaces that resist lateral displacement of one coil relative to an adjacent coil.

15. The method of claim 14 in which at least one coil and an immediately adjacent coil have engaging shoulders that resist lateral displacement of the coils relative to one another.

16. The method of claim 14 in which at least one coil and an immediately adjacent coil having engaging convex and concave surfaces that assist in maintaining the implant in a helical configuration.

17. The method of claim 13 wherein the distraction device includes a channel in communication with the inner space and introducing flowable bone filler material comprises introducing flowable bone filler material through the channel and into the inner space.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein the distraction device includes a plurality of apertures in communication with the channel and wherein the flowable bone filler material exits through the apertures into the inner space.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein the apertures comprise a plurality of slots spaced therealong.

20. The method of claim 19 wherein the slots direct the flowable bone filler material into the inner space defined by the coils of the distraction device.
