Abstract

Systems and methods for application controlled pre-fetch are described. One method is for receiving pre-fetch information, over a network, at a first load balancer. The pre-fetch information is received from a first server. The pre-fetch information includes a first element identifier. The method is further for retrieving a first element by communicating a message to a second server, the message including the first element identifier.

Claims (40)

1. A method comprising:

receiving, at a first load balancer over a network from a client machine, a message including a request for an interface and an identifier, the interface being a web page comprising a first element that is rendered for display by a browser that executes on the client machine, the identifier identifying the webpage for retrieval from a first server;

in response to receiving the message, receiving the interface including the first element configured as a nested interface element and pre-fetch information over a network at the first load balancer, the interface and pre-fetch information generated by and received from the first server, the pre-fetch information including a first element identifier that identifies the first element, and the first element comprising a script including a second element identifier, the second element identifier including a uniform resource locator that identifies a second element that indicates a Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) file; and

retrieving the first element by communicating a second message to a second server, the second message including the first element identifier of the pre-fetch information.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising communicating the message for the interface to the first server.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the pre-fetch information includes a plurality of element identifiers and wherein the plurality of element identifiers includes the first element identifier that includes a first uniform resource locater that is utilized by the first load balancer to retrieve the first element from the second server.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising storing the prefetch information in a cache that is accessible to the first load balancer.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising communicating the first element identifier to the second server.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising storing the first element in a cache that is accessible to the first load balancer to service a subsequent retrieval of the first element by the client machine.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a cookie from the second server at the first load balancer, the cookie being associated with the first element;

storing the cookie in association with the first element; and

communicating the cookie to the client machine responsive to receiving a message for the first interface element from the client machine.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the nested interface element is retrieved using the pre-fetch information instead of by the interface.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first element is retrieved in parallel with other elements of the interface.

10. A system comprising:

at least one processor and executable instructions accessible on a computer-readable medium that, when executed, cause the at least one processor to perform operations comprising:

receiving, at a first load balancer over a network from a client machine, a message including a request for an interface and an identifier, the interface being a web page comprising a first element that is rendered for display by a browser that executes on the client machine, the identifier identifying the webpage for retrieval from a first server;

in response to receiving the message, receiving the interface including the first element configured as a nested interface element and pre-fetch information over a network at the first load balancer, the interface and pre-fetch information generated by and received from the first server, the pre-fetch information including a first element identifier that identifies the first element, and the first element comprising a script including a second element identifier, the second element identifier including a uniform resource locator that identifies a second element that indicates a JPEG file; and

retrieving a first element by communicating a second message to a second server, the second message including the first element identifier of the pre-fetch information.

11. The system of claim 10 , the operations further comprising communicating the message for the interface to the first server.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the pre-fetch information includes a plurality of element identifiers and wherein the plurality of element identifiers includes the first element identifier that includes a first uniform resource locater that is utilized by the first load balancer server to retrieve the first element from the second server.

13. The system of claim 10 , the operations further comprising storing the pre-fetch information in a cache that is accessible to the first load balancer.

14. The system of claim 13 , the operations further comprising communicating the first element identifier to the second server.

15. The system of claim 14 , the operations further comprising storing the first element in a cache that is accessible to the first load balancer to service a subsequent retrieval of the first element by the client machine.

16. The system of claim 15 , the operations further comprising:

receiving a cookie from the second server at the first load balancer, the cookie is associated with the first element; and

storing the cookie in association with the first element; and

communicating the cookie to the client machine responsive to receipt of a message for the first element from the client machine.

17. The system of claim 10 , wherein the nested interface element is retrieved using the pre-fetch information instead of by the interface.

18. The system of claim 10 , wherein the first element is retrieved in parallel with other elements of the interface.

19. A system comprising:

a first means for receiving at a first load balancer over a network from a client machine, a message including a request for an interface and an identifier, the interface being a web page, comprising a first element, that is rendered for display by a browser that executes on the client machine, the identifier identifying the webpage for retrieval from a first server; and

at least one processor and executable instructions accessible on a computer-readable medium that, when executed, cause the at least one processor to perform operations comprising:

in response to receiving the message, receiving the interface including the first element configured as a nested interface element and pre-fetch information over a network at the first load balancer, the interface and pre-fetch information generated by and received from the first server, the pre-fetch information including a first element identifier that identifies the first element, and the first element comprising a script including a second element identifier, the second element identifier including a uniform resource locator that identifies a second element that indicates a JPEG file; and

retrieving the first element by communicating a second message to a second server, the second message including the first element identifier of the pre-fetch information, wherein the nested interface element is retrieved using the pre-fetch information instead of by the interface.

20. A machine-readable medium not comprising transitory signals and storing instructions that, when executed by a machine, cause the machine to perform operations comprising:

receiving, at a first load balancer over a network from a client machine, a message including a request for an interface and an identifier, the interface being a web page, comprising a first element, that is rendered for display by a browser that executes on the client machine, the identifier identifying the webpage for retrieval from a first server;

in response to receiving the message, receiving the interface including the first element configured as a nested interface element and pre-fetch information over a network at the first load balancer, the interface and pre-fetch information generated by and received from the first server, the pre-fetch information including a first element identifier that identifies the first element, and the first element comprising a script including a second element identifier, the second element identifier including a uniform resource locator that identifies a second element that indicates a JPEG file; and

retrieving the first element by communicating a second message to a second server, the second message including the first element identifier of the pre-fetch information, wherein the nested interface element is retrieved using the pre-fetch information instead of by the interface.
