Abstract

In one embodiment, a method includes receiving user input that includes an indication that the user is generating social-network content. The social network includes a number of nodes and a number of edges connecting the nodes, with at least one node corresponding to the user. The method includes accessing information about one or more places corresponding to a location of the user and automatically generating a check-in to one of the one or more places for the user. The method includes automatically associating the check-in with the content.

Claims (58)

1. A method comprising:

by a computing device, determining that a user is generating social-network content, the social network comprising a plurality of nodes and a plurality of edges connecting the nodes, at least one node corresponding to the user, wherein the social-network content:

is not a check-in to a place; and

has not been posted to the social network before the determination is made that the user is generating the social-network content;

by a computing device, in response to the determination that the user is generating social-network content, determining, based on a location of the user and before the social-network content is posted to the social network, a plurality of places that the user is located while generating the social-network content;

by a computing device, for each of the plurality of places is the user is determined to be located, accessing a confidence value associated with a granularity associated with that place;

by a computing device determining, for each of the plurality of places, whether the confidence value associated with the granularity associated with that place exceeds a threshold confidence value;

by a computing device selecting, from the places associated with a granularity that exceeds the threshold confidence value, the place having the most precise granularity;

by a computing device, automatically generating a check-in for the user to the selected place; and

by a computing device, automatically associating the check-in with the content determined to be generated by the user so that the check-in identifies the selected place.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing for presentation to the user an interactive element associated with the check-in, the interactive element allowing the user to alter the check-in.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the interactive element allows the user to delete the check-in.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the plurality of places is associated with a different granularity than at least one other of the places.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

automatically generating a check-in to the selected place comprises automatically generating a plurality of check-ins for the user, each check-in corresponding to one of the plurality of places; and

automatically associating the check-in with the content comprises automatically associating the plurality of check-ins with the content.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein at least one of the places corresponding to one of the check-ins is associated with a different granularity than at least one of the other places associated with one of the other check-ins.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the location comprises a first location, the method further comprising:

by a computing device, determining that the user is located at a second location;

by a computing device, accessing information about one or more second places corresponding to the second location; and

by a computing device, automatically generating a check-in to one of the one or more second places for the user.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

by a computing device, presenting the check-in and the second check-in to a social-network user.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein presenting the check-in and the second check-in to a social-network user comprises presenting a map identifying the place associated with the check-in and the second place associated with the second check-in.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein presenting the map comprises presenting one or more of:

a route taken by the user between the place and the second place; or

a time the user was at the place or the second place.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein automatically generating a check-in to one of the one or more places for the user comprises automatically generating, based at least in part on a check-in history for the user, a check-in to one of the one or more places for the user.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein automatically generating a check-in to the selected place comprises automatically generating, based at least in part on a time of day, a check-in to the selected place.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein automatically generating a check-in to the selected place comprises automatically generating, based at least in part on type of place associated with at least one of the plurality of places, a check-in to the selected place.

14. One or more computer-readable non-transitory storage media embodying software that is operable when executed to:

determine that a user is generating social-network content, the social network comprising a plurality of nodes and a plurality of edges connecting the nodes, at least one node corresponding to the user, wherein the social-network content:

is not a check-in to a place; and

has not been posted to the social network before the determination is made that the user is generating the social-network content;

in response to the determination that the user is generating social-network content, determine, based on a location of the user and before the social-network content is posted to the social network, a plurality of places that the user is located while generating the social-network content;

for each of the plurality of places is the user is determined to be located, access a confidence value associated with a granularity associated with that place;

determine, for each of the plurality of places, whether the confidence value associated with the granularity associated with that place exceeds a threshold confidence value;

select, from the places associated with a granularity that exceeds the threshold confidence value, the place having the most precise granularity;

automatically generate a check-in for the user to the selected place; and

automatically associate the check-in with the content determined to be generated by the user so that the check-in identifies the selected place.

15. The media of claim 14 , wherein:

the software that is operable when executed to automatically generate a check-in the selected place comprises software that is operable when executed to automatically generate a plurality of check-ins for the user, each check-in corresponding to one of the plurality of places; and

the software that is operable when executed to automatically associate the check-in with the content comprises software that is operable when executed to automatically associate the plurality of check-ins with the content.

16. A system comprising:

one or more processors; and a memory coupled to the processors comprising instructions executable by the processors, the processors being operable when executing the instructions to:

determine that a user is generating social-network content, the social network comprising a plurality of nodes and a plurality of edges connecting the nodes, at least one node corresponding to the user, wherein the social-network content:

is not a check-in to a place; and

has not been posted to the social network before the determination is made that the user is generating the social-network content;

in response to the determination that the user is generating social-network content, determine, based on a location of the user and before the social-network content is posted to the social network, a plurality of places that the user is located while generating the social-network content;

for each of the plurality of places is the user is determined to be located, access a confidence value associated with a granularity associated with that place;

determine, for each of the plurality of places, whether the confidence value associated with the granularity associated with that place exceeds a threshold confidence value;

select, from the places associated with a granularity that exceeds the threshold confidence value, the place having the most precise granularity;

automatically generate a check-in for the user to the selected place; and

automatically associate the check-in with the content determined to be generated by the user so that the check-in identifies the selected place.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the user is generating social-network content comprises determining that the user is accessing a graphical user interface of a social-network content composer.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein determining that the user is generating social-network content comprises determining that the user is generating social-network content in the social-network content composer.

19. The method of claim 17 , wherein the social-network content comprises a post to the social network.

20. The media of claim 14 , wherein determining that the user is generating social-network content comprises determining that the user is accessing a graphical user interface of a social-network content composer.
