Abstract

Methods and apparatus for communicating with the Internet via a gateway are disclosed. The gateway may be a Radio Access Network (RAN) gateway. The gateway may communicate data with at least one user equipment (UE). The gateway may route the data via one or more interfaces. The data may be routed by bypassing a core network.

Claims (54)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a transceiver for wireless communications with user equipments (UEs) using a compression protocol for voice data; and

a first controller coupled with the transceiver and an Internet Protocol (IP) gateway;

the first controller including a first U-plane server configured to control a flow of the voice data and a first C-plane server configured to control signaling;

wherein the first controller provides U-plane packets of the voice data and C-plane packets of the signaling to bypass a core network; and

wherein the first controller is configured to use a stacked, layered protocol having an IP transport layer.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the IP gateway comprises a voice data converter that converts the voice data between AMR compressed voice data and G.729 compressed voice data.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the transceiver is configured with a Uu interface for conducting wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) wireless communications with the UEs including voice services using the compression protocol for voice data;

wherein the first U-plane server is coupled with the transceiver using the stacked, layered protocol having the IP transport layer; and

wherein the first C-plane server is coupled with the transceiver using a stacked, layered protocol connection having the IP transport layer.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 , further comprising:

a second C-plane server coupled with the transceiver using the stacked, layered protocol having the IP transport layer; and

wherein the first C-plane server is coupled with the second C-plane server using the stacked, layered protocol having the IP transport layer.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first controller is a first Radio Network Controller (RNC).

6. The apparatus of claim 5 , further comprising:

a second RNC coupled with a second transceiver using the stacked, layered protocol having the IP transport layer;

wherein the first RNC is coupled with the second RNC using the stacked, layered protocol having the IP transport layer.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the IP Gateway includes at least part of a Gateway General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) Support Node.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the IP gateway includes a Serving GPRS Support Node that is coupled with the first controller.

9. An apparatus comprising:

a transceiver to facilitate wireless communications between at least one user equipment (UE) and a network using a compression protocol for voice data;

a first controller coupled with the transceiver and an Internet Protocol LIP) gateway;

the first controller including a first U-plane server configured to control a flow of the voice data and a first C-plane server configured to control signaling; and

the first controller providing U-plane packets of the voice data and C-plane packets of the signaling to bypass a core network;

a device, coupled with the first controller, the device configured to use a stacked, layered protocol having an IP transport layer.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the device comprises a voice data converter to convert the voice data between AMR compressed voice data and G.729 compressed voice data.

11. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the transceiver is configured with a Uu interface for conducting wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) wireless communications with a plurality of UEs including voice services using the compression protocol for voice data;

wherein the first U-plane server is coupled with the transceiver using the stacked, layered protocol having the IP transport layer; and

wherein the first C-plane server is coupled with the transceiver using the stacked, layered protocol having the IP transport layer.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , further comprising:

a second C-plane server coupled with the transceiver using the stacked, layered protocol having the IP transport layer; and

wherein the first C-plane server is coupled with the second C-plane server using the stacked, layered protocol having the IP transport layer.

13. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein said first controller is a first Radio Network Controller (RNC).

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , further comprising:

a second RNC coupled with a second transceiver using the stacked, layered protocol having the IP transport layer;

wherein the first RNC is coupled with the second RNC using the stacked, layered protocol having the IP transport layer.

15. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the device is an IP Gateway having at least part of a Gateway General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) Support Node.

16. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the IP gateway includes a Serving GPRS Support Node that is coupled with the first controller.

17. A method of wireless communication comprising:

receiving, using a compression protocol, user data from a user equipment (UE), the user data including voice data;

routing, using an Internet Protocol (IP) gateway and a stacked, layered protocol having an IP transport layer, signaling traffic and at least the voice data to bypass a core network,

wherein the voice data is routed using a first U-plane and the signaling traffic is routed using a first C-plane.

18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising converting the voice data between AMR compressed voice data and G.729 compressed voice data.

19. The method of claim 17 , further comprising:
