Abstract

The present invention relates to a prosthetic capsular bag and method for inserting the same. The prosthetic capsular bag helps to maintain the volume of the natural capsular bag, thereby stabilizing the effective lens position of an IOL so that refractive outcomes may be improved with cataract surgery. The prosthetic capsular bag further provides an integrated refractive surface, providing a means for experimentally determining an effective lens position prior to inserting an IOL.

Claims (18)

1. A prosthetic implant device for insertion into a natural capsular bag of an eye after removal of a cataract, the natural capsular bag having a volume prior to removal of the cataract, wherein said prosthetic implant device is adapted to contain an intraocular lens, said prosthetic implant device comprising an anterior surface including an opening configured to remain open in the eye, and a posterior surface, wherein at least a portion of said posterior surface is a refractive surface, wherein the refractive surface has a non-zero diopter optical power and wherein said prosthetic implant device is configured to mechanically maintain substantially the volume of the natural capsular bag.

2. The prosthetic implant device of claim 1 , wherein a portion of said prosthetic implant device is shaped such that an exterior contour of the prosthetic implant device conforms to a shape of the natural capsular bag and maintains the volume of said natural capsular bag.

3. The prosthetic implant device of claim 1 , wherein said prosthetic implant device is a biological compatible, deformable prosthetic implant device.

4. The prosthetic implant device of claim 1 , further comprising an exterior contour adapted to mechanically maintain said prosthetic implant device at a specific position within said eye.

5. The prosthetic implant device of claim 4 , wherein said exterior contour is a flange extending from said opening.

The prosthetic implant device of claim 1 , wherein said refractive surface includes at least one or more of the following characteristics: concave, convex, spherical, aspheric, wavefront, multifocal diffractive, multifocal refractive, multifocal zonal, accommodative, UV filtering, diffractive chromatic aberration reducing, and astigmatism correcting toric form.

A prosthetic implant device for insertion into a natural capsular bag of an eye after removal of a cataract, the natural capsular bag having a volume prior to removal of the cataract, wherein said prosthetic implant device is adapted to contain an intraocular lens, said prosthetic implant device including a posterior surface, wherein at least a portion of said posterior surface is a refractive surface having a non-zero diopter optical power, and an anterior surface including an opening wherein said prosthetic implant device is configured to maintain the natural capsular bag open, establishing a three dimensional volume substantially similar to the volume of the natural capsular bag prior to removal of the cataract.

A prosthetic implant device for insertion into a natural capsular bag of an eye after removal of a cataract, the natural capsular bag having a volume prior to removal of the cataract, wherein said prosthetic implant device is adapted to contain an intraocular lens, said prosthetic implant device including an anterior surface, an opening in the anterior surface, and a posterior surface, wherein at least a portion of said posterior surface is a refractive surface, wherein said refractive surface has an optical power between +30 diopter and −30 diopter, the prosthetic implant device sized to substantially maintain the volume of the natural capsular bag prior to removal of the cataract.

9. The prosthetic implant device of claim 8 , wherein said refractive surface has a non-zero diopter optical power.

The prosthetic implant device of claim 8 , wherein a portion of said prosthetic implant device adapted to lie within the natural capsular bag is shaped such that an exterior contour of the prosthetic implant device conforms to a shape of the natural capsular bag and maintains the volume of said natural capsular bag.

11. The prosthetic implant device of claim 8 , wherein said opening is configured to be open when the prosthetic implant device is placed in the eye.

A prosthetic implant device for insertion into a natural capsular bag of an eye after removal of a cataract, the natural capsular bag having a volume prior to removal of the cataract, wherein said prosthetic implant device is adapted to contain an intraocular lens, said prosthetic implant device comprising an anterior surface including an opening configured to remain open in the eye, and a posterior surface, wherein at least a portion of the posterior surface is a refractive surface having a non-zero diopter optical power, the prosthetic implant device comprising a volume substantially sized to expand the natural capsular bag to the volume of the natural capsular bag prior to removal of the cataract.

The prosthetic implant device of claim 12 , wherein said refractive surface includes one or more of the following characteristics: concave, convex, spherical, aspheric, wavefront, multifocal diffractive, multifocal refractive, multifocal zonal, accommodative, UV filtering, diffractive chromatic aberration reducing, and astigmatism correcting toric form.

14. The prosthetic implant device of claim 12 , further comprising an exterior contour adapted to mechanically maintain said prosthetic implant device at a specific position in the eye, wherein the exterior contour is a flange extending from said opening.

A prosthetic implant device for insertion into a natural capsular bag of an eye after removal of a cataract, wherein said prosthetic implant device is adapted to contain an intraocular lens, said prosthetic implant device comprising an anterior surface including an opening configured to remain open in the eye, and a posterior surface, wherein at least a portion of said posterior surface is a refractive surface, and wherein said prosthetic implant device is configured to self-expand to maintain a volume of the natural capsular bag.

16. The prosthetic implant device of claim 15 , further comprising an exterior contour adapted to mechanically maintain said prosthetic implant device at a specific position in the eye.

A device for insertion into a natural capsular bag of an eye after removal of a cataract, the device adapted to contain an intraocular lens, the device comprising an anterior surface, a posterior surface, and sidewalls between the anterior surface and the posterior surface, the anterior surface including an opening, at least a portion of the posterior surface being a refractive surface, the device having sufficient elasticity to resume a pre-folded shape once positioned in the eye.

18. The device of claim 17 , further comprising an exterior contour adapted to mechanically maintain the device at a specific position in the eye.
