Abstract

Users store information relevant to first responders in the event of an emergency. When a user later places an emergency call, the user's emergency information is automatically made available to the public-safety answering point operator handling the call. Hotel personal are notified of the call and may listen to and break in to the ongoing call in order to assist. A reverse 9-1-1 broadcast enables hotel personnel to quickly notify guests of an emergency situation via in-room and mobile phones. In the event that police need to conduct surveillance on a target location, the onsite PBX server reconfigures phones within the vicinity of the target location to operate in an open mode and records the audio/visual information received. An incoming call to a hotel room from the PSAP is automatically connected to the in-room phone even if other incoming calls not from the PSAP are being screened by front desk.

Claims (23)

1. A method of handling incoming calls at a hotel PBX, the method comprising:

receiving an incoming call at the hotel;

when the incoming call specifies a destination DID of a specific guest room and at least one emergency call has been placed from the specific guest room within a predetermined time period, routing the call to the specific guest room;

when the incoming call specifies the destination DID of the specific guest room and no emergency call has been placed from the specific guest room within a predetermined time period, routing the call to a first destination different than the specific guest room;

when at least one emergency call has been placed from the specific guest room within the predetermined time period, routing the call to both the specific guest room and a second destination different than the specific guest room; and

when no emergency call has been placed from the specific guest room within the predetermined time period, routing the call to only the first destination.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first destination and the second destination are the same.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the first destination is an automated answering system for the hotel; and

the second destination corresponds to a phone that is answered by a human operator at the hotel.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein routing the call to both the specific guest room and the second destination comprises:

allowing a plurality of parties to answer the incoming call, a first party answering the call on an in-room phone within the specific guest room and a second party answering the call at the second destination extension; and

creating a conference call between the incoming caller and all the parties who answer the call at both the specific guest room and the second destination;

wherein all parties and the caller can communicate with each other via the conference call.

5. A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising computer executable instructions that when executed by one or more computers cause the one or more computers to perform the method of claim 1 .

6. An apparatus for handling incoming calls at a PBX, the apparatus comprising one or more processors configured to:

receive an incoming call at the PBX;

determine a specific telephone extension of the PBX to which the incoming call is directed;

look up in an emergency call log whether an emergency call has been placed from the specific telephone extension within a predetermined time period;

route the call to the specific telephone extension when at least one emergency call has been placed from the specific telephone extension within the predetermined time period;

route the call to a first destination extension of the PBX different than the specific telephone extension to which the incoming call is directed when no emergency call has been placed from the specific telephone extension within the predetermined time period;

route the call to both the specific telephone extension and a second destination extension of the PBX different than the specific telephone extension when at least one emergency call has been placed from the specific telephone extension within the predetermined time period; and

route the call to only the first destination extension of the PBX when no emergency call has been placed from the specific telephone extension within the predetermined time period.
