Abstract

A method of distributing a software upgrade to user computer systems having a software application installed thereon is disclosed. A determination is made as whether the software upgrade is to be a forced upgrade or a recommended upgrade for a first user based on a parameter related to the first user or the software upgrade. A determination is made as to whether a software upgrade file is to be downloaded to a user computer using a trickle mode or a burst mode.

Claims (53)

1. A system, comprising:

a computing device comprising hardware;

at least one network interface coupled to a data network;

non-transitory memory coupled to the at least one computing device that stores instructions that when executed by the at least one computing device cause, at least in part, the system to implement:

enabling a software application to be downloaded over a network to a computing device of a user;

transmitting an upgrade indication to the user computing device having the software program installed thereon;

initiating a software program update download to the user computing device at a software program update download rate,

wherein the software program update download rate to the user computing device is based at least in part on a network access type of the user computing device;

pausing the software program update download at least partly in response to a first event;

detecting an online presence of the user computing device, wherein the detection of the online presence of the user computing device is performed after the first event; and

at least partly in response to the detection of the online presence of the user computing device, resuming the software program update download of the software program.

2. The system as defined in claim 1 , wherein an installation of the software program update is performed at least partly in response to a user confirmation of an update notice displayed by the user computing device.

3. The system as defined in claim 1 , wherein an update notice corresponding to the software program update is not displayed by the user computing device prior to the installation of the software program update.

4. The system as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first event comprises a failed network connection.

5. The system as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first event comprises a shutdown of the user computing device.

6. The system as defined in claim 1 , wherein a software version determination of the software program installed on the user computing device is performed prior to downloading the software program update to the user computing device.

7. The system as defined in claim 1 , wherein the network access type of the user computing device comprises a cable network access.

8. The system as defined in claim 1 , wherein the online presence detection comprises a plurality of online presence detections and the resumption of the software program update download of the software program comprises a plurality of resumptions until the software program update download completes.

9. The system as defined in claim 1 , wherein the software program contains a security flaw repaired in the software program update.

10. The system as defined in claim 1 , wherein the software program update contains a media update.

11. The system as defined in claim 1 , the operations further comprising:

reading a start time period from computer readable memory; and

subsequent to the detection of the online presence of the user computing device, delaying the software program update initiation to a time corresponding to the start time period.

12. A system, comprising:

at least one computing device comprising hardware;

at least one network interface coupled to a data network;

non-transitory memory coupled to the at least one computing device that stores instructions that when executed by the at least one computing device cause, at least in part, the system to implement:

enabling a software application to be downloaded over a network to a computing device of a user;

transmitting an upgrade indication to the user computing device having the software program installed thereon;

initiating a software program update download to the user computing device at a software program update download rate,

wherein the software program update download rate to the user computing device is based at least in part on a level of system performance of the user computing device during the software program update download;

pausing the software program update download at least partly in response to a first event;

detecting an online presence of the user computing device, wherein the detection of the online presence of the user computing device is performed after the first event; and

at least partly in response to the detection of the online presence of the user computing device, resuming the software program update download of the software program.

13. The system as defined in claim 12 , wherein an installation of the software program update is performed at least partly in response to a user confirmation of an update notice displayed via the software program by the user computing device.

14. The system as defined in claim 12 , wherein an update notice corresponding to the software program update is not displayed by the user computing device prior to the installation of the software program update.

15. The system as defined in claim 12 , wherein the first event comprises a failed network connection.

16. The system as defined in claim 12 , wherein the first event comprises a shutdown of the user computing device.

17. The system as defined in claim 12 , wherein a software version determination of the software program installed on the user computing device is performed prior to downloading the software program update to the user computing device.

18. The system as defined in claim 12 , wherein the online presence detection comprises a plurality of online presence detections and the resumption of the software program update downloads of the software program comprises a plurality of resumptions until the software program update download completes.

19. The system as defined in claim 12 , wherein the software program contains a security flaw repaired in the software program update.

20. The system as defined in claim 12 , wherein the software program update contains a media update.

21. The system as defined in claim 12 , the operations further comprising:

reading a start time period from computer readable memory; and

subsequent to the detection of the online presence of the user computing device, delaying the software program update initiation to a time corresponding to the start time period.

22. A method of distributing a software update, the method comprising:

providing a software program for a mobile computing device associated with a user;

transmitting, by a first system comprising computer hardware configured with specific executable instructions, an upgrade indication to the user computing device having the software program installed thereon;

initiating a software program update download to the user computing device at a software program update download rate,

wherein the software program update download rate to the user computing device is based at least in part on a network access type of the user computing device used to perform the software program update download;

pausing the software program update download at least partly in response to a first event;

detecting an online presence of the user computing device, wherein the detection of the online presence of the user computing device is performed after the first event; and

at least partly in response to the detection of the online presence of the user computing device, resuming the software program update download of the software program.
