Abstract

A housing including a plurality of openings for receiving fiber optic connectors and protecting the polished end face of the connectors from damage while the connectors are stored within a telecommunications connection cabinet. A module with a plurality of optical fiber cables connected to a first optical fiber cable and terminated by a fiber optic connector. Each of the connectors are inserted within openings in a connector holder for storage and protection until the cables need to be connected to a customer equipment cable.

Claims (33)

1. A fiber optic telecommunications module comprising:

a splitter housing;

a fiber optic splitter arranged within the splitter housing, the fiber optic splitter being configured to split an optical signal into a plurality of optical signals carried away from the splitter housing on a plurality of fiber optic pigtails, each of the fiber optic pigtails having a connectorized end opposite the splitter housing; and

a storage module configured to store a plurality of the connectorized ends of the fiber optic pigtails, the storage module being separate from the splitter housing, the storage module not including connecting structure to optically couple together two fiber optic connectors.

2. The fiber optic telecommunications module according to claim 1 , wherein the connectorized ends include fiber optic connectors, each of the fiber optic connectors having a ferrule with a polished end face and a dust cap arranged about the polished end face.

3. The fiber optic telecommunications module according to claim 2 , wherein the storage module stores the fiber optic connectors in a row.

4. The fiber optic telecommunications module according to claim 2 , wherein the storage module defines a first side and an opposite second side, wherein only the first side of the storage module is configured to receive the fiber optic connectors.

5. The fiber optic telecommunications module according to claim 2 , wherein the storage module defines a plurality of cavities into which the fiber optic connectors can be inserted.

6. The fiber optic telecommunications module according to claim 1 , wherein the storage module is configured to store at least eight connectorized ends of the fiber optic pigtails.

7. The fiber optic telecommunications module according to claim 1 , wherein the storage module includes a plurality of latching arms to aid in retaining the connectorized ends of the fiber optic pigtails at the storage module.

8. The fiber optic telecommunications module according to claim 1 , wherein the storage module includes a releasable fastener on a first end to aid in mounting the storage module to a panel.

9. The fiber optic telecommunications module according to claim 1 , wherein the splitter housing includes at least a first cable exit member through which at least some of the fiber optic pigtails extend from the splitter housing.

10. A telecommunications connection cabinet comprising:

an enclosure defining an interior, the enclosure including at least one door for covering an access opening used to access the interior;

a splitter mounting location positioned within the interior of the enclosure, the splitter mounting location including a fiber optic splitter positioned within a splitter housing, the fiber optic splitter being configured to split an optical signal into a plurality of optical signals that are carried by a plurality of first optical fibers, each of first optical fibers having a connectorized end;

a fiber connection location positioned within the interior of the enclosure, the fiber connection location including a plurality of fiber optic adapters, each fiber optic adapter having a first side and a second side, the first side of each fiber optic adapter defining a receptacle that is configured to receive the connectorized end of one of the first optical fibers and the second side of each fiber optic adapter defining a receptacle that is configured to receive a connectorized end of one of a plurality of second optical fibers, wherein the fiber optic adapters are configured to optically couple the first optical fibers to the second optical fibers;

a dedicated storage location positioned within the interior of the enclosure at which the connectorized ends of at least some of the first optical fibers can be stored, the storage location being spaced from the splitter mounting location;

a first routing path for routing at least some of the first optical fibers from the splitter mounting location to the fiber connection location, the first routing path extending downwardly from the splitter mounting location and then to the fiber connection location; and

a second routing path for routing at least some of the first optical fibers from the splitter mounting location to the storage location, the second routing path extending downwardly from the splitter mounting location and then to the storage location.

11. The telecommunications cabinet of claim 10 , further comprising at least one storage module configured for storing the connectorized ends of at least some of the first optical fibers, each storage module being configured to mount at the dedicated storage location.

12. The telecommunications cabinet of claim 11 , wherein the dedicated storage location includes a bulkhead defining bulkhead openings, and wherein each storage module mounts to the bulkhead via the bulkhead openings.

13. The telecommunications cabinet of claim 10 , wherein the first routing path includes a first fiber storage location for storing excess fiber length in at least a partial loop.

14. The telecommunications cabinet of claim 13 , wherein the first fiber storage location includes a vertical row of spool structures.

15. The telecommunications cabinet of claim 10 , wherein the second routing path includes a second fiber storage location for storing excess fiber length in at least a partial loop.

16. The telecommunications cabinet of claim 10 , wherein the connectorized ends are horizontally oriented and aligned along a horizontal plane when stored at the dedicated storage location.

17. The telecommunications cabinet of claim 10 , further comprising an exit member that projects outwardly from the splitter housing, wherein a plurality of the first optical fibers are routed out the splitter housing through the exit member.

18. A telecommunications connection cabinet comprising:

an enclosure defining an interior, the enclosure including a door for at least partially covering an opening enabling access to the interior;

a fiber optic splitter module mounting location positioned within the interior of the enclosure and accessible from the enclosure opening;

a fiber connection panel positioned within the interior of the enclosure, the fiber connection panel including a plurality of fiber optic adapters, each fiber optic adapter being configured for coupling together two fiber optic connectors such that an optical interconnection is made between the two fiber optic connectors, the fiber optic adapters being mounted at first openings provided in the fiber connection panel; and

a storage location within the interior of the enclosure, the storage location being provided at a face of a panel, the panel including at least one second opening corresponding to a station adapted for mounting a storage module, the first and second openings having different configurations.

19. The telecommunications connection cabinet of claim 18 , wherein the storage module includes a fastening element that is received in the second opening and assists in releasably attaching the storage module to the panel.

20. The telecommunications connection cabinet of claim 18 , further comprising a fiber optic splitter module installed at the fiber optic splitter module mounting location, wherein the fiber optic splitter module outputs a plurality of splitter output cables having connectorized ends.
