Abstract

Systems and methods for optimization of mobile traffic directed to private networks and operator configurability thereof are disclosed. One embodiment includes a method, which may be implemented on a system, for identifying a network accessed by mobile traffic at a mobile device, identifying an operator of the network, and/or determining whether the mobile traffic is directed towards a private or public network. In response to determining that the mobile traffic is directed towards a private network, determining whether the private network is owned by or operated by the operator. Optimization of the mobile traffic is performed based on policies set by the operator. In general, the system maintains and/or enforces different sets of policies regarding mobile traffic optimization set by different and multiple operators.

Claims (23)

1. A method of cellular or WIFI traffic optimization, the method, comprising:

detecting outgoing traffic from a mobile device connected to a server and subscribed to an operator of a public Internet Protocol (IP) network;

performing, at the mobile device, one of (i) optimization of the outgoing traffic based on an optimization policy set of the operator and (ii) allowing optimization of the output traffic by a remote entity of the server and based on the optimization policy set, when the outgoing traffic is directed towards the private IP network and the private IP network is owned by the operator, the optimization policy set being same for the private IP network and the public IP network,

allowing, by the mobile device, the outgoing traffic to reach the destination corresponding to the destination network address without optimization by the mobile device or the remote entity, when the outgoing traffic is directed towards the private IP network and the private IP network is not owned by the operator of the public IP network, and

receiving a response from the remote entity when the outgoing traffic is directed to the public IP network,

wherein the response to the outgoing traffic directed towards the public IP network is optimized by the remote entity based on the optimization policy set.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein, the private network address is directed to a private IP address space; wherein, the private IP address space is defined by RFC 1918 or RFC 4193.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the remote entity optimizes the response by transcoding.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the remote entity optimizes the response by altering a format of the response to reduce a file size thereof.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein, the traffic includes a request sent over a cellular network at the mobile device.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein, the traffic includes a request sent over a WIFI network at the mobile device.

7. A system comprising:

a mobile device connected to a server and subscribed to an operator of an public IP network; and

a remote entity on the server;

wherein the mobile device comprises:

a processor;

a memory unit having instructions stored thereon, which when executed by the processor, causes the processor to:

detect outgoing traffic directed to the server;

analyze a destination network address corresponding to the outgoing traffic to determine whether the outgoing traffic is directed towards the public IP network or a private IP network that is not publicly routable;

perform one of (i) optimization of the outgoing traffic based on an optimization policy set of the operator and (ii) allowing optimization of the output traffic, by the remote entity, based on the optimization policy set, when the outgoing traffic is directed towards the private IP network and the private IP network is owned by the operator, the optimization policy set being same for the private IP network and the public IP network,

allow the outgoing traffic to reach the destination corresponding to the destination network address without optimization by the mobile device or the remote entity, when the outgoing traffic is directed towards the private IP network and the private IP network is not owned by the operator of the public IP network, and

receive an optimized response from the remote entity when the outgoing traffic is directed to the public IP network,

wherein the response to the outgoing traffic directed towards the public IP network is optimized by the remote entity based on the optimization policy set.
