Abstract

An apparatus, system and methodology for establishing a wireless communications link using a wireless device are provided. A computing device includes a wallet application for completing transactions based on wireless data communications between the computing device and at least one external electronic device. The computing device includes a short-range radio frequency (RF) transceiver to communicate with an external RF transceiver. A near-field communication (NFC) module includes a NFC antenna, and the NFC module is configured to transmit wireless setup information between the NFC antenna and a NFC reader in communication with the external electronic device based on the NFC antenna of the computing device being within a RF range of the NFC antenna of the NFC reader. A processor establishes a wireless communications link between the short-range RF transceiver and the external RF transceiver to initiate transactions between the computing device and the at least one external electronic device.

Claims (80)

1. A computing device, comprising:

at least one processor;

at least one memory having stored therein a plurality of applications to be executed by the at least one processor, the plurality of applications being programmed into at least one wallet application to govern transactions based on wireless data communications between the computing device and at least one external electronic device;

a short-range radio frequency (RF) transceiver configured to communicate with an external RF transceiver in communication with the at least one external electronic device, wherein the short-range RF transceiver and the external RF transceiver support a predetermined communications protocol; and

a near-field communication (NFC) device including a NFC antenna, the NFC device configured to transmit wireless setup information between the NFC antenna and a NFC reader in communication with the at least one external electronic device based on the NFC antenna of the computing device being within a RF range of the NFC antenna of the NFC reader,

wherein the at least one processor is configured to establish a wireless communications link between the short-range RF transceiver and the external RF transceiver to initiate at least one specific application governed transaction between the computing device and the at least one external electronic device via the short-range RF transceiver based on the establishing of the wireless communications link,

wherein the at least one memory further stores an electronic credential mapped to a reader key received from an issuer of the electronic credential, the electronic credential comprising reader key information indicating the reader key associated with the electronic credential, and

wherein the at least one processor is further configured to:

receive the reader key programmed in the at least one external electronic device via the wireless communications, and

select the electronic credential using the reader key information to initiate the transaction in response to the reader key.

2. The computing device of claim 1 ,

wherein the at least one memory has stored therein at least one electronic credential,

wherein the short-range RF transceiver is configured to transmit to the at least one external electronic device the at least one electronic credential, and

wherein the at least one processor is further configured to initiate the at least one application governed transaction between the computer device and the at least one external electronic device via the short-range RF transceiver based on the transmission of the at least one electronic credential to the at least one external electronic device.

The computing device of claim 2 , wherein the at least one electronic credential includes one or more of data associated with a credit card account, a debit card account, a stored value card account, an automated teller machine card account, a bank account, a payment token card account, a membership card account, a loyalty card account, an access card account, an identification card account, a driver's license, an e-ticket, a pass, a coupon, or a certificate.

4. The computing device of claim 1 , further comprising a user interface,

wherein the short-range RF transceiver is further configured to receive from the at least one external device an information request,

wherein the user interface is further configured to generate a prompt for a user input to the user interface based on the information request,

wherein the at least one processor is further configured to generate user input data based on the user input to the user interface,

wherein the short-range RF transceiver is further configured to transmit the user input data to the at least one external electronic device via the short-range RF transceiver, and

wherein the at least one processor is further configured to initiate the at least one application governed transaction between the computing device and the at least one external electronic device via the short-range RF transceiver based on the transmitting of the user input data to the at least one external electronic device.

5. The computing device of claim 1 , wherein the wireless setup information includes at least one of wireless configuration information or security information.

6. The computing device of claim 1 , further comprising:

a network transceiver configured to communicate with a cellular communications network.

7. The computing device of claim 1 , further comprising:

a biometric characteristic reader for reading a biometric characteristic of a user,

wherein the computing device is configured to perform at least one of the transmission of the wireless setup information between the NFC antenna and the NFC reader and initiating the at least one application governed transaction between the computing device and the at least one external electronic device, based on comparing the biometric characteristic of the user with stored biometric information.

8. A method, comprising:

storing in at least one memory of a computing device at least one application configured to be executed by at least one processor of the computing device, the at least one application being programmed into at least one wallet application to govern transactions based on wireless data communications between the computing device and at least one external electronic device;

storing, in the at least one memory of the computing device, an electronic credential mapped to a reader key received from an issuer of the electronic credential, the electronic credential comprising reader key information indicating the reader key associated with the electronic credential;

transmitting, between a near-field communication (NFC) device of the computing device and a NFC reader in communication with the external electronic device, wireless setup information based on a NFC antenna of the NFC device being within a radio frequency (RF) range of a NFC antenna of the NFC reader;

establishing a wireless communications link between a short-range RF transceiver of the computing device and an external RF transceiver in communication with the external electronic device, based on the transmitting of the wireless setup information, wherein the short-range RF transceiver of the computing device and the external RF transceiver support a predetermined communications protocol;

receiving a reader key programmed in the at least one external electronic device via the wireless communications;

selecting the electronic credential using the reader key information to initiate the transaction in response to the received reader key; and

initiating, based on the establishing of the wireless communications link and the selected electronic credential, at least one application governed transaction between the computing device and the external RF transceiver in communication with the external electronic device.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the at least one memory has stored therein at least one electronic credential, and the method further comprises:

transmitting to the at least one external electronic device the at least one electronic credential; and

initiating the at least one application governed transaction between the computing device and the at least one external electronic device via the short-range RF transceiver based on the transmission of the at least one electronic credential to the at least one external electronic device.

The method of claim 9 , wherein the at least one electronic credential includes at least one of data associated with a credit card account, a debit card account, a stored value card account, an automated teller machine card account, a bank account, a payment token card account, a membership card account, a loyalty card account, an access card account, an identification card account, a driver's license, an e-ticket, a pass, a coupon, or a certificate.

11. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

receiving, from the at least one external device via the short-range RF transceiver, an information request based on establishing a wireless communication link;

generating a prompt for a user input to the user interface based on the information request;

generating user input data based on the user input to the user interface;

transmitting the user input data to the at least one external electronic device via the short-range RF transceiver; and

initiating the at least one application governed transaction between the computing device and the at least one external electronic device via the short-range RF transceiver based on the transmitting of the user input data to the at least one external electronic device.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the wireless setup information includes at least one of wireless configuration information or security information.

13. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

reading a biometric characteristic of a user with a biometric characteristic reader; and

performing at least one of the transmission of the wireless setup information between the NFC antenna and the NFC reader and initiating the at least one application governed transaction between the computing device and the at least one external electronic device, based on comparing the biometric characteristic of the user with stored biometric information.

14. A computing system comprising:

a near-field communication (NFC) reader;

an external electronic device in communication with the NFC reader;

an external radio frequency (RF) transceiver in communication with the external electronic device; and

a computing device including:

at least one processor,

at least one memory having stored therein a plurality of applications to be executed by the at least one processor, the plurality of applications being programmed into at least one wallet application to govern transactions based on wireless data communications between the computing device and at least one external electronic device,

a short-range RF transceiver configured to communicate with the external RF transceiver, wherein the short-range RF transceiver and the external RF transceiver support a predetermined communications protocol, and

a near-field communication (NFC) device including a NFC antenna, the NFC device configured to transmit wireless setup information between the NFC antenna and the NFC reader based on the NFC antenna of the computing device being within a RF range of a NFC antenna of the NFC reader,

wherein the at least one processor is configured to establish a wireless communications link between the short-range RF transceiver and the external RF transceiver to initiate at least one application governed transaction between the computing device and the at least one external device via the short-range RF transceiver based on establishing the wireless communications link,

wherein the at least one memory further stores an electronic credential mapped to a reader key received from an issuer of the electronic credential, the electronic credential comprising reader key information indicating the reader key associated with the electronic credential, and

wherein the at least one processor is further configured to:

receive a reader key programmed in the at least one external electronic device via the wireless communications, and

select the electronic credential using the reader key information to initiate the transaction in response to the received reader key.

15. The computing system of claim 14 ,

wherein the at least one memory has stored therein at least one electronic credential,

wherein the short-range RF transceiver is further configured to transmit to the at least one external electronic device the at least one electronic credential, and

wherein the at least one processor is further configured to initiate the at least one application governed transaction between the computing device and the at least one external electronic device via the short-range RF transceiver based on the transmission of the at least one electronic credential to the at least one external electronic device.

The computing system of claim 15 , wherein the at least one electronic credential includes at least one of data associated with a credit card account, a debit card account, a stored value card account, an automated teller machine card account, a bank account, a payment token card account, a membership card account, a loyalty card account, an access card account, an identification card account, a driver's license, an e-ticket, a pass, a coupon, or a certificate.

17. The computing system of claim 14 ,

wherein the computing device further comprises a user interface,

wherein the short-range RF transceiver is configured to receive from the at least one external device an information request,

wherein the user interface is configured to generate a prompt for a user input to the user interface based on the information request,

wherein the at least one processor is configured to generate user input data based on the user input to the user interface,

wherein the short-range RF transceiver is configured to transmit the user input data to the at least one external electronic device via the short-range RF transceiver, and

wherein the at least one processor is further configured to initiate the at least one application governed transaction between the computing device and the at least one external electronic via the short-range RF transceiver based on the transmitting of the user input data to the at least one external electronic device.

18. The computing system of claim 14 , wherein the wireless setup information includes at least one of wireless configuration information or security information.

19. The computing system of claim 14 , wherein the computing device further comprises a network transceiver configured to communicate with a cellular communications network.

20. The computing system of claim 14 ,

wherein the computing device further comprises a biometric characteristic reader for reading a biometric characteristic of a user, and

wherein the computing device is configured to perform at least one of the transmission of the wireless setup information between the NFC antenna and the NFC reader and initiating the at least one application governed transaction between the computing device and the at least one external electronic device, based on comparing the biometric characteristic of the user with stored biometric information.
