Abstract

The present invention provides a stabilized hypohalous acid solution (or formulation thereof), which may be conveniently packaged for sale, or stored for later use on demand. The invention further provides methods of making the stabilized hypohalous acid solutions, as well as methods of use for disinfecting mammalian tissue, including wounds and burns, and treating skin irritations, among other uses.

Claims (20)

1. A method for treating an irritation of the skin of a subject, comprising: administering a hypochlorous acid composition to the affected area, wherein the composition has an available free chlorine (AFC) content of from about 100 to about 1000 ppm and is stabilized by at least an equal molar amount of dissolved inorganic carbon incorporated in the form of a bicarbonate salt, the composition being a fluorosilicate hydrogel having a pH of from 4.4 to 7.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the irritation is characterized by an inflammatory reaction or hyperinflammation of the skin.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the subject has atopic dermatitis, skin allergy, rosasea, psoriasis, or acne.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the subject has pemphigus, erythema multiforme, or bullous disease of the skin.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the subject has a type I hypersensitivity reaction.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the type I hypersensitivity reaction includes one or more of itching or hives.

7. The method of claim 2 , wherein the subject has a type IV hypersensitivity reaction.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the subject has Sjogrren's Syndrome, Sarcoidosis, or contact dermatitis.

9. The method of claim 2 , wherein the subject has a drug reaction or transplant rejection.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the irritation accompanies a bacterial or viral infection.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the subject has a skin fungal infection.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the subject has an autoimmune reaction.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hypochlorous acid composition is created by electrolysis of saline.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hypochlorous acid composition has an AFC content of from about 100 ppm to about 500 ppm.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hypochlorous acid composition has a pH of from 5 to 7.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the dissolved inorganic carbon is present at a molar ratio of not more than 5:1 with respect to the AFC content.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hypochlorous acid composition contains 300 to 1500 mg/L of a bicarbonate salt.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hypochlorous acid composition has AFC of greater than about 300 ppm, a conductivity of from about 1 mS/cm to about 10 mS/cm, and a pH of from 5 to 6.5.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the hypochorous acid composition further comprises phosphoric acid.

20. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition further comprises phosphate buffer.
