Abstract

A device, system, and method to provide access to a storage device based on biometric verification. A computing device includes a wireless transceiver configured to communicate wirelessly with a data network, a user interface configured to receive a user input to access data from a storage device in communication with the data network, and a biometric characteristic reader configured to receive user characteristic data to verify a user's identity. The computing device is configured to access the data from the storage device via the wireless transceiver and the data network based on verification of the user's identity.

Claims (57)

1. A computing device, comprising:

a wireless transceiver configured to communicate wirelessly with a data network to connect to a remote storage device storing a plurality of media assets;

a processor to exchange media processing capabilities with a media player device connected to the computing device, the computing device being removably connectable to the media player device, and to generate a user interface according to the received media processing capabilities of the media player device, the user interface being configured by the processor to be displayed at the media player device to display a list of the media assets stored in the storage device, and to receive a user input from the media player device selecting a media asset from the displayed list at the media player device, the processor being configured to access the selected media asset from the storage device; and

an external biometric characteristic reader configured to receive user biometric characteristic data to verify a user's identity after a wireless connection with the media player device is established,

wherein:

the processor is configured to access the selected media asset from the storage device via the wireless transceiver and the data network based on verification of the user's identity, for display at the media player device; and

the user interface is configured by the processor to filter the displayed list of stored media assets according to the received media format processing capabilities of the media player device to omit media assets that cannot be processed by the media player device.

2. The computing device of claim 1 , wherein the data network is the Internet, and the storage device is connected to the Internet to perform at least one of sending and receiving of data over the Internet.

3. The computing device of claim 2 , wherein the wireless transceiver includes a cellular transceiver, and

the wireless transceiver is configured to perform at least one of sending and receiving of data over the Internet via a cellular network.

4. The computing device of claim 1 , wherein the data network is an Internet Protocol (IP) network, and

the wireless transceiver is configured to perform at least one of sending and receiving of data over the IP network using a routable address of the storage device.

5. The computing device of claim 1 , wherein the wireless transceiver is configured to communicate over the data network using at least one of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth protocols.

6. The computing device of claim 1 , wherein the media player device includes the biometric characteristic reader.

7. The computing device of claim 1 , further comprising:

a multimedia adapter to register the computing device with the data network and enable multimedia calls via the data network.

8. A computing system, comprising:

a remote storage device in communication with a data network, the storage device storing a plurality of media assets;

a media player device in communication with the data network; and

a computing device removably connectable to the media player device, the computing device comprising:

a wireless transceiver configured to communicate wirelessly with the data network;

a processor configured to:

exchange media format processing capabilities with the media player device and to generate a user interface according to the received media format processing capabilities of the media player device, the user interface being configured by the processor to be displayed at the media player device to display a list of the media assets stored in the storage device,

to receive a user input from the media player device selecting a media asset from the displayed list of media assets, and

to access the selected media asset from the storage device; and

an external biometric characteristic reader configured to receive user biometric characteristic data to verify a user's identity after a wireless connection with the media player device is established,

wherein:

the processor is further configured to access the selected media asset from the storage device via the wireless transceiver and the data network based on verification of the user's identity, for display at the media player device; and

the user interface is further configured to filter the displayed list of stored media assets according to the received media format processing capabilities of the media player device to omit media assets that cannot be processed by the media player device.

9. The computing system of claim 8 , wherein the data network is the Internet, and the storage device is connected to the Internet to perform at least one of sending and receiving of data over the Internet.

10. The computing system of claim 9 , wherein the wireless transceiver includes a cellular transceiver, and

the wireless transceiver is configured to perform at least one of sending and receiving of data over the Internet via a cellular network.

11. The computing system of claim 8 , wherein the data network is an Internet Protocol (IP) network, and

the wireless transceiver is configured to perform at least one of sending and receiving of data over the IP network using a routable address of the storage device.

12. The computing system of claim 8 , wherein the wireless transceiver is configured to communicate over the data network using at least one of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth protocols.

13. The computing system of claim 8 , wherein the media player device includes the biometric characteristic reader.

14. The computing device of claim 8 , wherein the computing device further comprises:

a multimedia adapter to register the computing device with the data network and enable multimedia calls via the data network.

15. A method, comprising:

exchanging media format processing capabilities between a computing device and a media player device, the computing device being removably connectable to the media player device;

connecting the computing device to a storage device in communication with a data network, the storage device storing a plurality of media assets;

generating a user interface at the computing device according to the received media processing capabilities of the media player device, the user interface being displayed at the media player device to display a list of media assets stored in the storage device;

filtering, at the computing device, the displayed list of available media assets according to the received media processing capabilities of the media player device to omit media assets that cannot be processed by the media player device;

receiving, at the computing device, a user input at the user interface displayed at the media player device to select from the displayed list of media assets, and to access the selected media assets stored at the storage device via the computing device, the computing device being in wireless communication with the storage device via the data network, and the user interface being displayed on the media player device via a wired or wireless connection;

receiving, by an external biometric characteristic reader, a biometric characteristic of a user after the wireless connection with the media player device is established;

verifying an identity of the user based on the biometric characteristic of the user; and

wirelessly accessing the selected media asset stored at the storage device by the computing device based on the verifying the identity of the user, for display at the media player device.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the data network is the Internet, and the storage device is connected to the Internet to perform at least one of sending and receiving of data over the Internet.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the computing device includes a cellular transceiver, and

the computing device performs at least one of sending and receiving of data over the Internet via a cellular network.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein the data network is an Internet Protocol (IP) network, and

the wireless transceiver is configured to perform at least one of sending and receiving of data over the IP network using a routable address of the storage device.

19. The method of claim 15 , wherein the computing device communicates with the storage device over the data network using at least one of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth protocols.

20. The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

receiving the biometric characteristic from the media player device.

21. The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

Registering the computing device with the data network to enable multimedia calls from the computing device via the data network.
