Abstract

Articles and procedures for preventing or treating vaginal prolapse, urinary incontinence, and other disorders of the pelvic floor.

Claims (23)

1. A medical device for use in a vaginal vault suspension surgical procedure, the medical device comprising:

an implant including a central support portion and at least one extension portion;

a dilator coupled to the at least one extension portion, the dilator having an opening, the opening having an engagement feature; and

an insertion tool including:

a handle;

a rigid shaft comprising a proximal end extending from the handle and a distal end, the shaft including a curvilinear arc between the proximal end and the distal end, the shaft configured for movement through a fascia muscle of a patient; and

a tip portion including a proximal end and a distal end, the tip portion including a plurality of articulating links extending along at least a portion of a length from the proximal end of the tip portion to the distal end of the tip portion, the proximal end of the tip portion extending directly and outwardly from the distal end of the shaft; and

the tip portion having an engagement feature configured to engage with the engagement feature of the dilator.

2. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the curvilinear arc of the shaft is configured to move through an area of the patient in a vaginal vault suspension surgical procedure.

3. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of articulating links include a series of snap-fit links configured to provide flexibility to the tip portion.

4. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the tip portion is steerable.

5. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the tip portion, when connected with the dilator, is configured to anchor the implant to a vaginal apex.

6. A method of performing a vaginal vault suspension, comprising the steps of:

inserting a needle of a medical device into a patient in a first configuration, the needle comprising:

a handle;

a rigid shaft comprising a proximal end extending from the handle and a distal end, the shaft including a curvilinear arc shape between the proximal end and the distal end; and

a tip portion comprising a proximal end and a distal end, the tip portion including a plurality of articulating links, the proximal end of the tip portion extending directly and outwardly from the distal end of the shaft in a first orientation tip, the tip portion having an engagement feature,

wherein the medical device also includes an implant having a central support portion and at least one extension portion, the medical device including a dilator coupled to the at least one extension portion, the dilator having an opening, the opening having an engagement feature;

coupling the dilator to the tip portion of the needle by engaging the engagement feature within the opening of the dilator with the engagement feature of the tip portion of the needle;

moving the shaft through a fascia muscle of the patient; and

reconfiguring the tip portion from the first orientation to a second orientation within the patient during placement at a vaginal apex in a vaginal vault suspension surgical procedure.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the plurality of articulating links include a series of snap-fit links configured to provide flexibility to the tip portion.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the plurality of articulating links defines a first curvature in the first orientation, and the plurality of articulating links defines a second curvature in the second orientation.
