Abstract

Apparatus and method for opening refrigerant sources while servicing a refrigeration system are provided by this disclosure. A system may include a fluid source, a device capable of coupling to the fluid source, and a fluid receiving system. The device may include a valve disposed in the body of the apparatus. A portion of the valve being engageable with a refrigerant supply composed of either a self-sealing valve or a penetrable seal.

Claims (62)

1. An apparatus for servicing a refrigeration system, comprising:

a central body, the central body comprising:

an internal bore, wherein a portion of the internal bore has a first inside diameter and a second inside diameter, wherein the second inside diameter is greater than the first inside diameter thereby defining a shoulder;

a first fluid port, the first fluid port being in fluid communication with the internal bore and a refrigeration system;

a second fluid port, the second fluid port being configured for fluid communication with the internal bore and a refrigerant supply device, the refrigerant supply device being one of a first type of refrigerant supply device having a self-sealing valve which opens when depressed or a second type of refrigerant supply device having a seal which opens when penetrated, wherein the second inside diameter is proximal to the second fluid port;

a valve disposed in the internal bore, wherein the valve includes a plunger, wherein the plunger comprises a stop portion and an end portion, wherein the end portion is adapted to engage with the self-sealing valve of the first type of refrigerant supply device and/or to penetrate the seal of the second type of refrigerant supply device, wherein the plunger is directly coupled to the valve, wherein the end portion of the plunger comprises a first opening, wherein the plunger comprises a second opening and a hollow section that extends from the first opening to the second opening to permit fluid flow from the refrigerant supply device through the hollow section to the second fluid port,

a sealing member positioned adjacent to the stop portion;

a biasing member, and

an actuator, wherein, during use, the actuator actuates the plunger to move to a first position that allows fluid to communicate between the second fluid port and the first fluid port, or a second position which substantially inhibits fluid communication between the first fluid port and the second fluid port, wherein at the second position the sealing member is positioned between the stop portion and the shoulder to abut the shoulder and inhibit fluid communication between the second fluid port and the first fluid port,

wherein the biasing member applies a biasing force to the plunger that inhibits the plunger from contacting the self-sealing valve or the penetrable seal of the refrigerant supply device unless motion of the actuator causes the plunger to move to a position that permits fluid flow between the second fluid port and the first fluid port.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the end portion of the plunger is tapered.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the actuator is a handle capable of being manipulated manually.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the refrigeration system is an automobile refrigeration system.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the plunger further comprises a body portion having a first outside diameter, and wherein the stop portion has a second outside diameter that is greater than the first outside diameter.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the valve has a third outside diameter that is greater than the first outside diameter.

7. An apparatus for servicing a refrigeration system, comprising:

a valve including a plunger, wherein the plunger is directly coupled to the valve, and wherein the plunger comprises an end portion;

a first fluid port, the first fluid port being in fluid communication with the apparatus and a refrigeration system;

a second fluid port, the second fluid port being configured for fluid communication with the apparatus and a refrigerant supply device having an outlet, wherein the refrigerant supply device outlet comprises either a) a self-sealing valve or b) a seal that requires puncturing, wherein the end portion of the plunger comprises a first opening, and wherein the plunger comprises a second opening and a hollow section that extends from the first opening to the second opening to permit fluid flow from the refrigerant supply device through the hollow section to the second fluid port;

an internal bore adapted for fluid communication between the second fluid port and the first fluid port, wherein the valve is disposed in the internal bore, and wherein the internal bore comprises a shoulder proximal to the second fluid port;

a sealing member coupled to the plunger;

an actuator mechanically coupled to the plunger, wherein the end portion of the plunger is adapted to engage the self-sealing valve of the refrigerant supply device outlet and/or to puncture the seal of the refrigerant supply device outlet, and

a biasing member, wherein the biasing member applies a biasing force to the plunger that positions the sealing member against the shoulder to abut the sealing member against the shoulder and inhibit fluid communication between the second fluid port and the first fluid port, and inhibits the plunger from contacting the self-sealing valve or the penetrable seal of the refrigerant supply device unless motion of the actuator causes the plunger to move to a position that permits fluid flow between the second fluid port and the first fluid port.

8. A method of servicing a refrigeration system, comprising:

providing an apparatus to a refrigerant system; the apparatus comprising:

a valve including a plunger, wherein the plunger is directly coupled to the valve, and wherein the plunger comprises an end portion;

a first fluid port, the first fluid port being in fluid communication with the apparatus and a refrigeration system;

a second fluid port, the second fluid port being configured for fluid communication with the apparatus and a refrigerant supply device having an outlet, wherein the refrigerant supply device being one of a first type of refrigerant supply device having a self-sealing valve which opens when depressed and a second type of refrigerant supply device having a seal which opens when penetrated, wherein the end portion of the plunger is adapted to engage with the self-sealing valve and/or to penetrate the seal, wherein the end portion of the plunger comprises a first opening, wherein the plunger comprises a second opening and a hollow section that extends from the first opening to the second opening to permit fluid flow from the refrigerant supply device through the hollow section to the second fluid port;

an internal bore adapted for fluid communication between the second fluid port and the first fluid port, wherein the valve is disposed in the internal bore, and wherein the internal bore comprises a shoulder proximal to the second fluid port;

a sealing member coupled to the plunger;

an actuator mechanically coupled to the plunger, and

a biasing member,

advancing the valve of the apparatus such that a first end of the plunger punctures the seal of the second type of refrigerant supply device or at least partially opens the self-sealing valve of the first type of refrigerant supply device; and

allowing fluid to flow from the refrigerant supply device to the refrigerant system,

wherein the biasing member applies a biasing force to the plunger that positions the sealing member against the shoulder to abut the sealing member against the shoulder and inhibit fluid communication between the second fluid port and the first fluid port, and inhibits the plunger from contacting the self-sealing valve or the penetrable seal of the refrigerant supply device unless motion of the actuator causes the plunger to move to a position that permits fluid flow between the second fluid port and the first fluid port.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the refrigeration system is an automobile refrigeration system.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein allowing fluid to flow comprises regulating the fluid flow by advancing the valve in an opposite direction to at least partially close the self-sealing valve.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein engaging a plunger of the apparatus into the penetrable seal of the second type of refrigerant supply device comprises applying sufficient force to an actuator coupled to the plunger to puncture the seal of the second type of refrigerant supply device.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the plunger comprises a tapered end.

13. An apparatus for servicing a refrigeration system, the apparatus comprising:

a central body, the central body including

an internal bore comprising a shoulder,

a first fluid port in fluid communication with the internal bore and adapted to be placed in fluid communication with the refrigeration system,

a second fluid port in fluid communication with the internal bore and adapted to be placed in fluid communication with a refrigerant supply device, the refrigerant supply device being one of a first type of refrigerant supply device having a self-sealing valve which opens when depressed and a second type of refrigerant supply device having a seal which opens when penetrated,

a valve disposed in the internal bore, the valve including a plunger, wherein the plunger is directly coupled to the valve, wherein the plunger comprises an end portion, wherein the end portion of the plunger being adapted to engage the self-sealing valve of the first type of refrigerant supply device and/or to penetrate the seal of the second type of refrigerant supply device, wherein the end portion of the plunger comprises a first opening, wherein the plunger comprises a second opening and a hollow section that extends from the first opening to the second opening to permit fluid flow from the refrigerant supply device through the hollow section to the second fluid port; and

a sealing member coupled to the plunger;

a biasing member, and

an actuator mechanically coupled to the plunger, wherein motion of the actuator causes the plunger to move to a first plunger position in which the plunger does not substantially inhibit fluid flow between the second fluid port and the first fluid port,

wherein the biasing member applies a biasing force to the plunger that positions the sealing member against the shoulder to abut the sealing member against the shoulder and inhibit fluid communication between the second fluid port and the first fluid port, and inhibits the plunger from contacting the self-sealing valve or the penetrable seal of the refrigerant supply device unless motion of the actuator causes the plunger to move to a position that permits fluid flow between the second fluid port and the first fluid port.

14. The apparatus as claimed in claim 13 wherein the valve when actuated by motion of the actuator carries out an action, wherein the action is one of opening the self-sealing valve or puncturing the seal.

15. The apparatus as claimed in claim 13 wherein an end portion of the plunger is tapered.

16. The apparatus as claimed in claim 13 wherein the actuator is a handle capable of being manipulated manually.

The apparatus as claimed in claim 13 wherein the actuator has a first actuator position in which the plunger is in the first plunger position in which the plunger does not substantially inhibit fluid flow between the second fluid port and the actuator also has a second actuator position in which the plunger is in a second plunger position in which the plunger substantially inhibits fluid flow between the second fluid port.

18. The apparatus as claimed in claim 17 wherein when the plunger is in the first plunger position the plunger engages the self-sealing valve of the first type of refrigerant supply device or penetrates the seal of the second type of refrigerant supply device.

19. An apparatus for servicing a refrigeration system, the apparatus comprising:

an internal bore comprising a shoulder;

a first fluid port in fluid communication with the internal bore and adapted to be placed in fluid communication with the refrigeration system;

a second fluid port in fluid communication with the internal bore and adapted to be placed in fluid communication with a refrigerant supply device;

a valve disposed in the internal bore and having a plunger, wherein the plunger is directly coupled to the valve, the plunger having a tapered end and being adapted to be capable of both penetrating a seal of a first type of refrigerant supply device which is opened when the seal is penetrated and/or depressing a spring loaded piston of a self-sealing valve of a second type of refrigerant supply device which is opened when the spring loaded piston is depressed, wherein the tapered end of the plunger comprises a first opening, wherein the plunger comprises a second opening and a hollow section that extends from the first opening to the second opening to permit fluid flow from the refrigerant supply device through the hollow section to the second fluid port;

a sealing member coupled to the plunger; and

a biasing member; wherein the biasing member applies a biasing force to the plunger that positions the sealing member against the shoulder to abut the sealing member against the shoulder and inhibit fluid communication between the second fluid port and the first fluid port, and inhibits the plunger from contacting the self-sealing valve or the penetrable seal of the refrigerant supply device unless motion of an actuator causes the plunger to move to a position that permits fluid flow between a second fluid port and a first fluid port.

20. The apparatus as claimed in claim 19 further comprising an actuator mechanically coupled to the plunger, wherein motion of the actuator causes the plunger to move to a first plunger position in which the plunger does not substantially inhibit fluid flow through the valve and wherein the actuator is a handle capable of being manipulated manually.
