Abstract

Improved hemostatic agents take the form of granules or particles that can be used to stanch, seal, or stabilize a site of hemorrhage, including a noncompressible hemorrhage.

Claims (23)

1. A hemostatic chitosan material in granule or particle form having a density greater than about 0.1 g/cm 3 and a granule or particle diameter of about 0.9 mm, wherein said granules or particles are produced by freeze-drying a frozen matrix of chitosan, heat-compressing said matrix, and then granulating the compressed matrix.

2. The hemostatic chitosan material of claim 1 , wherein the at least one of the granules or particles includes dense chitosan beads.

3. The hemostatic chitosan material of claim 1 , wherein the density of the hemostatic chitosan material in the form of a granule or particle is between about 0.10 to 0.60 g/cm3.

4. The hemostatic chitosan material of claim 1 , wherein the density of the hemostatic chitosan material in the form of a granule or particle is between about 0.10 to 0.50 g/cm3.

5. The hemostatic chitosan material of claim 1 , wherein the density of the hemostatic chitosan material in the form of a granule or particle is about 0.10 g/cm3.

6. The hemostatic chitosan material of claim 1 , further comprising a chitosan salt.

7. The hemostatic chitosan material of claim 6 , wherein the chitosan salt is selected from the group consisting of chitosan acetate, chitosan lactate, and chitosan hydroxyacetate.

8. A hemostatic device comprising a mesh socklet and the hemostatic chitosan material of claim 1 .

9. The hemostatic device of claim 8 , wherein the device further comprises strips of a polymer mesh material.

10. The hemostatic device of claim 8 , wherein the mesh socklet comprises a polymer material.

11. The hemostatic device of claim 8 , wherein the mesh socklet comprises openings sized to allow for the granules or particles to protrude out of the mesh socklet.

12. The hemostatic device of claim 8 , wherein the density of the chitosan material in the form of a granule or particle is between about 0.10 to 0.60 g/cm3.

13. The hemostatic device of claim 8 , wherein the density of the chitosan material in the form of a granule or particle is between about 0.10 to 0.50 g/cm3.

14. The hemostatic device of claim 8 , wherein the density of the chitosan material in the form of a granule or particle is about 0.10 g/cm3.

15. The hemostatic device of claim 8 , wherein the chitosan material comprises a chitosan salt.

16. The hemostatic device of claim 15 , wherein the chitosan salt is selected from the group consisting of chitosan acetate, chitosan lactate, and chitosan hydroxyacetate.

17. The hemostatic device of claim 8 , further comprising a cannula.

18. The hemostatic device of claim 8 , further comprising a syringe.

19. A method for stanching, sealing, or stabilizing a hemorrhage comprising providing the hemostatic chitosan material of claim 1 , and reacting said freeze-dried, heat-compressed, hemostatic chitosan material with at least one of blood, body fluid, and moisture at a hemorrhage site to adhere the compressed hemostatic chitosan material to a surface of the hemorrhage site.

20. The method of claim 19 , further comprising applying the freeze-dried, heat-compressed, hemostatic chitosan material to the hemorrhage site with the application of direct pressure and compression.

21. The method of claim 19 , further comprising applying the freeze-dried, heat-compressed, hemostatic chitosan material to the hemorrhage site without the application of direct pressure and compression.

22. The method of claim 19 , further comprising circumventing the immediate need for clotting proteins normally required for hemostasis.

23. The method of claim 19 , wherein the hemorrhage site is noncompressible.
