Abstract

A method and system to compensate for stray light errors in time of flight (TOF) camera systems uses reference targets in the in the field of view (FOV) that can be used to measure stray light. In different embodiments, one or more reference targets are used.

Claims (28)

1. A time of flight camera system, comprising:

a time of flight camera including a controller for determining ranges of objects; and

a reference target system;

wherein the controller is operable to estimate an amount of stray light for an object of interest based on a measurement of the reference target system using the time of flight camera, and to determine a range to the object of interest based on a measurement of the object of interest using the time of flight camera and based on the estimated amount of stray light.

2. A system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the reference target system is at a known range.

3. A system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the reference target system has a low reflectivity.

4. A system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the reference target system has a reflectance of less than 20%.

5. A system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the reference target system has a reflectance of less than 10%.

6. A system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the reference target system includes a low reflectivity target and a high reflectivity target.

7. A system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the reference target system includes a low reflectivity target having a reflectance of less than 10% and a high reflectivity target having a reflectance of greater than 50%.

8. A system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the reference target system includes a low reflectivity target having a reflectance of less than 10% and a high reflectivity target having a reflectance of greater than 60%.

9. A system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the controller is operable to monitor changes in a range of the reference target system due to stray light and to correct the range of the object of interest based on the changes.

10. A cow milking system including the time of flight camera system of claim 1 , and a robot arm comprising a cup for attaching to a cow teat and the reference target system, wherein the robot arm is controlled in response to the camera system.

11. A time of flight camera system comprising:

an illumination source operable to produce modulated light;

a sensor including demodulation pixels; and

a controller for determining ranges of objects, wherein the controller is operable to:

determine a range of a reference target system based on a time-of-flight technique using signals from the demodulation pixels,

compare the determined range of the reference target system to a known range of the reference target system to determine a stray light correction,

determine a range of an object of interest based on the time-of-flight technique using signals from the demodulation pixels, and

correct a range of the object of interest based on the stray light correction.

12. A system as claimed in claim 11 wherein the reference target has a reflectance of less than 20%.

13. A system as claimed in claim 11 wherein the reference target has a reflectance of less than 10%.

14. A system as claimed in claim 11 wherein the controller is further operable to estimate an amount of stray light for the object of interest.

15. A system as claimed in claim 11 wherein the reference target system includes a low reflectivity target and a high reflectivity target.

16. A system as claimed in claim 11 wherein the reference target system includes a low reflectivity target, and a high reflectivity target having a reflectance of greater than 50%.

17. A system as claimed in claim 11 wherein the reference target system includes a low reflectivity target, and a high reflectivity target having a reflectance of greater than 60%.

18. A system as claimed in claim 11 wherein the controller is operable to monitor changes in a range of the reference target system due to stray light and to correct for the range of the object of interest based on the changes.
