Abstract

Processes are provided including quenching a hot vapor stream to improve rapid thermal conversion processes for efficiently converting wood, other biomass materials, and other carbonaceous feedstock (including hydrocarbons) into high yields of valuable liquid product, e.g., bio-oil, on a large scale production.

Claims (27)

1. A method, comprising:

i) forming a vapor stream by fast pyrolysis of a biomass at a conversion temperature of between 350 and 600° C.; and

ii) rapidly quenching the vapor stream with a quench media from a temperature of between 350 and 600° C. to a temperature of less than 100° C. in less than 1 second.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method is continuous.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the vapor stream is condensed to form a liquid product in a condensing chamber.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the quench media comprises at least a portion of the liquid product.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the quench media is at a temperature of between 30 and 50° C.

6. The method of claim 3 , further comprising: continuously providing the quench media.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the vapor stream is rapidly quenched with a downward flow of the quench media.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the downward flow of the quench media is at a rate of at least 10 gallons per minute per square foot of cross-sectional area of the condensing chamber.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the quench media comprises at least a portion of the liquid product.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the quench media is cooled to a temperature of between 30 and 50° C. prior to rapidly quenching the vapor stream.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the method is continuous.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the vapor stream is rapidly quenched at or near atmospheric pressure.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the vapor stream is formed in less than 2 seconds.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the vapor stream is at a temperature of between 350 and 600° C.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the vapor stream is quenched to a temperature of less than 50° C. in less than 0.1 seconds.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the vapor stream is quenched to a temperature of less than 50° C. in less than 0.02 seconds.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the biomass is a solid biomass.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the biomass is selected from the group consisting of: wood, wood residue, and combinations thereof.

19. A method, comprising:

i) continuously providing a vapor stream to a condensing chamber, the vapor stream formed by fast pyrolysis of a solid biomass in less than 2 seconds at a conversion temperature of between 350 and 600° C.;

ii) continuously providing a quench media to the condensing chamber;

iii) rapidly quenching the vapor stream with a downward flow of the quench media in the condensing chamber from a temperature of between 350 and 600° C. to a temperature of less than 50° C. in less than 0.1 second; and

iv) condensing at least a portion of the vapor stream to form a liquid product in the condensing chamber,

wherein the quench media comprises a cooled liquid product formed by collecting the liquid product from the condenser and cooling at least a portion of the collected liquid product to a temperature of between 30 and 50° C.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the biomass is selected from the group consisting of: wood, wood residue, and combinations thereof.
