Abstract

The present invention relates to a process for producing an opaque, transparent or translucent transaction card having multiple features, such as a holographic foil, integrated circuit chip, silver magnetic stripe with text on the magnetic stripe, opacity gradient, an invisible optically recognizable compound, a translucent signature field such that the signature on back of the card is visible from the front of the card and an active thru date on the front of the card. The invisible optically recognizable compound is preferably an infrared ink comprising an infrared phthalocyanine dye, an infrared phosphor, and a quantum dot energy transfer compound. The infrared ink can be detected by a sensor found in an ATM or card assembly line.

Claims (25)

1. A transaction card, comprising:

a plurality of printable substrate layers;

wherein at least one of the printable substrate layers comprises an infrared blocking material, the infrared blocking material comprising a quantum dot compound; and

wherein the printable substrate layers are laminated together.

2. The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the printable substrate layers comprises a plastic polymeric substrate.

3. The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the printable substrate layers comprises polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

4. The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the printable substrate layers are transmissive to visible light.

5. The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the infrared blocking material comprises a mixture of a phosphor compound and the quantum dot compound.

6. The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the infrared blocking material comprises a mixture of a rare earth oxide compound and the quantum dot compound.

7. The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the infrared blocking material comprises an IR-absorbing compound.

8. The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the infrared blocking material comprises a mixture of two or more of the following: a rare earth oxide compound, the quantum dot compound, a phosphor compound, and an IR-absorbing compound.

9. The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the infrared blocking material comprises a mixture of at least two IR-absorbing phthalocyanine dyes.

10. The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the infrared blocking material is combined with a resin binder.

11. A method of making a transaction card, comprising:

forming an infrared blocking material on a first printable substrate layer that is transmissive to visible light, the infrared blocking material comprising a quantum dot compound; and

laminating the first printable substrate layer together with one or more additional printable substrate layers to form a laminated transaction card, wherein the additional printable substrate layers are transmissive to visible light such that the laminated transaction card is transmissive to visible light.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein infrared blocking material is printed to the first printable substrate layer.

13. The method of claim 11 , further comprising forming the infrared blocking material on both surfaces of the first printable substrate layer.

14. The method of claim 11 , further comprising stacking the printable substrate layers together during lamination of the printable substrate layers.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first printable substrate layer is laminated between at least two of the additional printable substrate layers.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the printable substrate layers comprises a plastic polymeric substrate.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the printable substrate layers comprises polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

18. The method of claim 11 , wherein the infrared blocking material comprises an IR-absorbing compound.

19. The method of claim 11 , wherein the infrared blocking material comprises a mixture of two or more of the following: a rare earth oxide compound, the quantum dot compound, a phosphor compound, and an IR-absorbing compound.

20. The method of claim 11 , wherein the infrared blocking material comprises a mixture of at least two IR-absorbing phthalocyanine dyes.
