Abstract

An earbud cover is configured to be removably attached to, and at least partially cover, an audio earbud. The removable earbud cover includes at least one light guide configured to guide light from at least one optical emitter associated with the audio earbud to a region of a body of a subject wearing the audio earbud and/or guide light from the body of the subject to at least one optical detector associated with the audio earbud. The removable earbud cover may include at least one alignment member that facilitates stability of the audio earbud when inserted within an ear of the subject. The removable earbud cover may include at least one lens region, at least one light diffusion region, and/or at least one luminescence region in optical communication with the at least one light guide.

Claims (24)

1. An earbud cover configured to be removably attached to, and at least partially cover, an audio earbud, the earbud cover comprising light transmissive material in at least one portion thereof configured to guide light from at least one optical emitter associated with the audio earbud to a region of a body of a subject wearing the audio earbud and/or guide light from the body of the subject to at least one optical detector associated with the audio earbud.

2. The earbud cover of claim 1 , wherein the transmissive material is configured to guide light from the at least one optical emitter to at least one region of an ear of the subject.

3. The earbud cover of claim 1 , wherein the transmissive material is configured to guide light from at least one region of an ear of the subject to the at least one optical detector.

4. The earbud cover of claim 1 , wherein the earbud cover comprises a soft material which deforms when the audio earbud is inserted within an ear of the subject.

5. The earbud cover of claim 1 , wherein the earbud cover comprises silicone.

6. The earbud cover of claim 1 , further comprising at least one alignment member that facilitates stability of the audio earbud when inserted within an ear of the subject.

7. The earbud cover of claim 1 , further comprising at least one lens region in optical communication with the transmissive material that focuses light emitted by the at least one optical emitter and/or focuses light from the body of the subject.

8. The earbud cover of claim 1 , further comprising at least one light diffusion region in optical communication with the transmissive material that diffuses light emitted by the at least one optical emitter.

9. The earbud cover of claim 1 , further comprising at least one luminescence region in optical communication with the transmissive material, wherein the at least one luminescence region receives light emitted by the at least one optical emitter and converts at least a portion of the received light to light having a different wavelength from the received light.

10. The earbud cover of claim 9 , wherein the at least one luminescence region comprises phosphor.

11. The earbud cover of claim 1 , comprising an outer surface and an inner surface, and further comprising a light reflective material on at least a portion of one or both of the inner and outer surfaces.

12. The earbud cover of claim 1 , comprising an inner surface and an outer surface, and wherein a layer of cladding material is disposed on at least a portion of the inner surface and/or outer surface, wherein the cladding material has a lower index of refraction than the transmissive material.

13. The earbud cover of claim 1 , further comprising at least one aperture through which sound from a speaker of the earbud can pass.

14. An earbud cover configured to be removably attached to, and at least partially cover, an audio earbud, the earbud cover comprising light transmissive material in at least one portion thereof configured to guide light from at least one optical emitter associated with the audio earbud to a non-ear canal region of an ear of a subject wearing the audio earbud and/or guide light from a non-ear canal region of the ear of the subject to at least one optical detector associated with the audio earbud.

15. The earbud cover of claim 14 , wherein the earbud cover comprises a soft material which deforms when the audio earbud is inserted within the ear of the subject.

16. The earbud cover of claim 14 , wherein the earbud cover comprises silicone.

17. The earbud cover of claim 14 , further comprising at least one alignment member that facilitates stability of the audio earbud when inserted within the ear of the subject.

18. The earbud cover of claim 14 , further comprising at least one lens region in optical communication with the light transmissive material that focuses light emitted by the at least one optical emitter and/or focuses light from the non-ear canal region of the ear.

19. The earbud cover of claim 14 , further comprising at least one light diffusion region in optical communication with the light transmissive material that diffuses light emitted by the at least one optical emitter.

20. The earbud cover of claim 14 , further comprising at least one luminescence region in optical communication with the light transmissive material, wherein the at least one luminescence region receives light emitted by the at least one optical emitter and converts at least a portion of the received light to light having a different wavelength from the received light.

21. The earbud cover of claim 20 , wherein the at least one luminescence region comprises phosphor.

22. The earbud cover of claim 14 , comprising an outer surface and an inner surface, and further comprising a light reflective material on at least a portion of one or both of the inner and outer surfaces.

23. The earbud cover of claim 14 , comprising an inner surface and an outer surface, and wherein a layer of cladding material is disposed on at least a portion of the inner surface and/or outer surface, wherein the cladding material has a lower index of refraction than the light transmissive material.

24. The earbud cover of claim 14 , further comprising at least one aperture through which sound from a speaker of the earbud can pass.
