Abstract

A method and apparatus for implementing spatial processing with unequal modulation and coding schemes (MCSs) or stream-dependent MCSs are disclosed. Input data may be parsed into a plurality of data streams, and spatial processing is performed on the data streams to generate a plurality of spatial streams. An MCS for each data stream is selected independently. The spatial streams are transmitted via multiple transmit antennas. At least one of the techniques of space time block coding (STBC), space frequency block coding (SFBC), quasi-orthogonal Alamouti coding, time reversed space time block coding, linear spatial processing and cyclic delay diversity (CDD) may be performed on the data/spatial streams. An antennal mapping matrix may then be applied to the spatial streams. The spatial streams are transmitted via multiple transmit antennas. The MCS for each data stream may be determined based on a signal-to-noise ratio of each spatial stream associated with the data stream.

Claims (20)

1. A station (STA) for implementing spatial processing using stream-dependent modulation and coding schemes (MCSs), the station comprising:

at least one receive antenna; and

a processor configured to at least:

receive a first data stream and a second data stream via the at least one receive antenna, wherein the first data stream and the second data stream are space time block coding (STBC) processed;

receive a third data stream via the at least one receive antenna, wherein the received third data stream is not STBC processed; and

perform spatial decoding on the received first data stream to generate a first spatially decoded data stream and perform spatial decoding on the received second data stream to generate a second spatially decoded data stream;

perform spatial decoding on the received third data stream to generate a third decoded data stream, wherein spatial decoding performed on the first data stream or the second data stream is based on a first modulation scheme, and wherein the spatial decoding performed on the third data stream is based on a second modulation scheme, and wherein the first modulation scheme is different than the second modulation scheme, wherein the first modulation scheme and the second modulation scheme are stream-dependent, and wherein the first modulation scheme and the second modulation scheme are based on a selected MCS.

2. The STA of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to at least perform constellation de-mapping on the first spatially decoded data stream and the second spatially decoded data stream to generate a plurality of bit streams, wherein the first spatially decoded data stream and the second spatially decoded data stream are space time block coding (STBC) processed to generate a first bit stream and a second bit stream.

3. The STA of claim 2 , wherein the processor is further configured to at least perform constellation de-mapping on the first spatially decoded data stream to generate a third bit stream.

4. The STA of claim 1 , wherein the MCS is determined based on a signal-to-noise ratio of a spatial stream.

5. The STA of claim 1 , wherein the spatial decoding on one of the first data stream, the second data stream, or the third data stream is performed by a minimum mean square error (MMSE) decoder, an MMSE-successive interference cancellation (SIC) decoder or a maximum likelihood (ML) decoder.

6. A method for implementing spatial processing using stream-dependent modulation and coding schemes (MCSs), the station, the method comprising:

receiving a first data stream and a second data stream via the at least one receive antenna, wherein the first data stream and the second data stream are space time block coding (STBC) processed;

receiving a third data stream via the at least one receive antenna, wherein the received third data stream is not STBC processed; and

performing spatial decoding on the received first data stream to generate a first spatially decoded data stream and performing spatial decoding on the received second data stream to generate a second spatially decoded data stream;

performing spatial decoding on the received third data stream to generate a third decoded data stream, wherein spatial decoding performed on the first data stream or the second data stream is based on a first modulation scheme, and wherein the spatial decoding performed on the third data stream is based on a second modulation scheme, and wherein the first modulation is different than the second modulation scheme, wherein the first modulation scheme and the second modulation scheme are stream-dependent, and wherein the first modulation scheme and the second modulation scheme are based on a selected MCS.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising performing constellation de-mapping on the first spatially decoded data stream and the second spatially decoded data stream to generate a plurality of bit streams, wherein the first spatially decoded data stream and the second spatially decoded data stream are space time block coding (STBC) processed to generate a first bit stream and a second bit stream.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising performing constellation de-mapping on the received third data stream to generate a third bit stream.

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein the MCS is determined based on a signal-to-noise ratio of a spatial stream.

10. The method of claim 6 , wherein the spatial decoding on one of the first data stream, the second data stream, or the third data stream is performed by a minimum mean square error (MMSE) decoder, an MMSE-successive interference cancellation (SIC) decoder or a maximum likelihood (ML) decoder.
