Abstract

Methods and systems for remotely accessing user equipment implementing an interactive media guidance application are provided. In particular, a method includes the steps of receiving user equipment identification information and receiving a user request from a user device indicating instructions for the user equipment. The user request is cross-referenced with an action request in a user equipment format selected from a plurality of formats to be compatible with the user equipment. The action request is transmitted for receipt by the user equipment for enabling execution of the indicated instructions.

Claims (35)

1. A method for remotely accessing user equipment, the method comprising:

storing, in a database, a first association between a first type of user request and a first plurality of action requests and a second association between a second type of user request and a second plurality of action requests, wherein each of the first plurality of action requests corresponds to a format that is compatible with a different interactive media guidance application implemented on user equipment;

receiving a user request of a given type from a first user equipment;

determining which of the first and second types corresponds to the given type of the received user request;

in response to determining that the given type of the received user request corresponds to the first type:

identifying second user equipment, of a plurality of user equipment capable of performing the first type of user request, that is accessible to the first user equipment;

identifying, in the database, an action request of the first plurality of action requests that is compatible with an interactive media guidance application of the second user equipment; and

transmitting the identified action request to the second user equipment in the format that is compatible with the interactive media guidance application of the second user equipment.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining which of the first and second types corresponds to the given type of the received user request further comprises identifying an interactive media guidance application of the first user equipment.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein an interactive media guidance application is used to receive the user request, and to transmit the identified action request to the second user equipment.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising selecting the format that is compatible with the interactive media guidance application of the second user equipment from a plurality of formats based at least in part on an application program interface of the interactive media guidance application of the second user equipment.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the interactive media guidance application of the second user equipment comprises a user account provided by a provider of the interactive media guidance application implemented on the second user equipment.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the interactive media guidance application of the second user equipment indicates a vendor of the second user equipment and a model of the second user equipment.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein identifying in the database an action request of the first plurality of action requests comprises maintaining a lookup table that cross-references the received user request with a plurality of formats including a format of the interactive media guidance application of the first user equipment format.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein transmitting the identified action request comprises transmitting the identified action request to a media service provider and the interactive media guidance application of second user equipment.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the received action request is in a format compatible with a first application program interface and the transmitted identified action request is compatible with a second application program interface different from the first application program interface.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising transmitting a notification to the interactive media guidance application of first user equipment that acknowledges the receipt by the interactive media guidance application of second user equipment of the identified action request.

11. A system for remotely accessing user equipment, the system comprising:

control circuitry configured to:

store, in a database, a first association between a first type of user request and a first plurality of action requests and a second association between a second type of user request and a second plurality of action requests, wherein each of the first plurality of action requests corresponds to a format that is compatible with a different interactive media guidance application implemented on user equipment;

receive a user request of a given type from a first user equipment;

determine which of the first and second types corresponds to the given type of the received user request;

in response to determining that the given type of the received user request corresponds to the first type:

identify second user equipment, of a plurality of user equipment capable of performing the first type of user request, that is accessible to the first user equipment;

identify, in the database, an action request of the first plurality of action requests that is compatible with an interactive media guidance application of the second user equipment; and

transmit the identified action request to the second user equipment in the format that is compatible with the interactive media guidance application of the second user equipment.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry configured to determine which of the first and second types corresponds to the given type of the received user request is further configured to identify an interactive media guidance application of the first user equipment.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein an interactive media guidance application is used to receive the user request, and to transmit the identified action request to the second user equipment.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to select the format that is compatible with the interactive media guidance application of the second user equipment from a plurality of formats based at least in part on an application program interface of the interactive media guidance application of the second user equipment.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the interactive media guidance application of the second user equipment comprises a user account provided by a provider of the interactive media guidance application implemented on the second user equipment.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the interactive media guidance application of the second user equipment indicates a vendor of the second user equipment and a model of the second user equipment.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry configured to identify in the database an action request of the first plurality of action requests is further configured to maintain a lookup table that cross-references the received user request with a plurality of formats including a format of the interactive media guidance application the first user equipment format.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry configured to transmit the identified action request is further configured to transmit the identified action request to a media service provider and the interactive media guidance application of second user equipment.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the received action request is in a format compatible with a first application program interface and the transmitted identified action request is compatible with a second application program interface different from the first application program interface.

20. The system of claim 11 , the control circuitry further configured to transmit a notification to the interactive media guidance application of first user equipment that acknowledges the receipt by the interactive media guidance application of second user equipment of the identified action request.
