Abstract

Provided are systems and methods for providing enhanced touch sensing. One system providing enhanced touch sensing includes a multi-mode touch screen and a processor configured to apply at least one test signal to a sense element of the multi-mode touch screen, detect at least one return signal from the sense element, and then determine a relative position of an object corresponding to the at least one return signal, the multi-mode touch screen being capable of sensing the first object using first and second detection modes. One multi-mode touch screen comprises a multi-mode multi-touch touch screen. One processor is configured to apply an adaptive test signal to a sense element of a touch screen.

Claims (26)

1. An electronic device, comprising:

a multi-mode touch screen including a plurality of touch sensors arranged in a matrix and configured to detect at least one object;

circuitry configured to

provide a test signal to at least one of the touch sensors,

receive a return signal from the at least one of the touch sensors, and

determine whether the at least one of the touch sensors detects the at least one object based on the return signal,

wherein the touch sensors detect the object using at least one of plural capacitive sensing modes and a resistive sensing mode.

2. The electronic device according to claim 1 , wherein the plural capacitive sensing modes include a mutual capacitance sensing mode in which the object is detected based on a change in fringe capacitance between touch sensors.

3. The electronic device according to claim 2 , wherein the plural capacitive sensing modes include a self-capacitance sensing mode in which a touch sensor detects the object based on a change in a capacitance of the touch sensor.

4. The electronic device according to claim 3 , wherein in the self-capacitive sensing mode, the circuitry references touch sensor to ground.

5. The electronic device according to claim 3 , wherein the circuitry causes the plurality of touch sensors to concurrently operate in the self-capacitance sensing mode, the mutual-capacitance sensing mode and the resistive sensing mode.

6. The electronic device according to claim 1 , wherein in the resistive sensing mode, the circuitry detects a pressure of exerted a pressure exerted by the object on a surface of the touch screen using the touch sensors.

7. The electronic device according to claim 6 , wherein in the resistive sensing mode, the circuitry determines detects the pressure by determining a width of a contact area of the object on the surface of the touch screen using the touch sensors.

8. The electronic device according to claim 6 , wherein the touch sensors include a first resistive layer separated from a second resistive layer by an insulator, and the circuitry determines the pressure based on a change in resistance caused by deflection of the first resistive layer towards the second resistive layer.

9. The electronic device according to claim 1 , wherein the circuitry causes the touch sensors to operate in the at least one of plural capacitive sensing modes and the resistive sensing mode concurrently.

10. The electronic device according to claim 1 , wherein the circuitry causes the touch sensors to operate in the at least one of plurality capacitive sensing modes and the resistive sensing mode sequentially.

11. The electronic device according to claim 1 , wherein the circuitry causes a first subset of touch sensors corresponding to a first area of the touch screen to operate in the at least one of plurality capacitive sensing modes, and causes a second subset of touch sensors corresponding to a second area of the touch screen to operate in the resistive sensing mode.

12. The electronic device according to claim 1 , wherein the multi-mode touch screen is configured to detect multiple touches.

13. The electronic device according to claim 12 , wherein the circuitry is further configured to provide a different test signal to each row of touch sensors in the matrix.

14. The electronic device according to claim 1 , wherein the electronic device is one of a cellular telephone, a personal digital assistant, a tablet computer, a gaming system or an electronic kiosk.

15. The electronic device according to claim 1 , wherein the object is one of a stylus, a finger and a covered finger.

16. The electronic device according to claim 13 , wherein the circuitry is configured to provide the different test signals by generating test signals having different voltages.

17. The electronic device according to claim 13 , wherein the circuitry is configured to provide the different test signals by generating test signals having different currents.

18. The electronic device according to claim 13 , wherein the circuitry is configured to provide the different test signals as spread spectrum test signals.

19. The electronic device according to claim 13 , wherein the circuitry is further configured to detect multiple objects from return signals corresponding to the different test signals.

20. The electronic device according to claim 19 , wherein the circuitry is further configured to detect a position of one of the multiple objects with reference to another of the multiple objects based on the return signals.
