Abstract

Methods and devices are provided for anchoring a ligament or tendon to bone. In particular, various delivery tools, including a variety of sheath inserter tools, are provided. The tools can be used to position a tendon within a prepared bone hole, and to deliver a sheath into the bone hole.

Claims (25)

1. An anchor inserter tool, comprising:

an outer elongate body having first and second prongs extending distally from a distal end thereof and configured to extend along opposed slots formed in a sheath of an anchor assembly;

an inner elongate body slidably disposed through the outer elongate body and having a distal end configured to extend into the sheath; and

a handle assembly coupled to a proximal end of the outer and inner elongate bodies, the handle assembly including a locking mechanism that is movable between a locked position, in which the locking mechanism prevents movement of the outer and inner elongate bodies relative to one another to maintain the distal end of the inner elongate body within the sheath with the first and second prongs of the outer elongate body extending along opposed slots formed in the sheath, and an unlocked position in which the outer elongate body is configured to be retracted proximally to remove the first and second prongs from engagement with the sheath while the distal end of the inner elongate body remains within the sheath.

2. The anchor inserter tool of claim 1 , wherein the inner elongate body includes a lumen configured to receive a proximal end of a guidewire coupled to a sheath of an anchor assembly.

3. The anchor inserter tool of claim 2 , wherein the handle assembly includes a guidewire lock configured to selectively engage and prevent movement of a guidewire disposed within the handle.

4. The anchor inserter tool of claim 1 , wherein the handle assembly includes an actuator coupled to the outer elongate body and configured to move the first elongate body axially with respect to the inner elongate body.

5. The anchor inserter tool of claim 4 , wherein the actuator is rotatable relative to the handle assembly such that rotation of the actuator is effective to cause axial translation of the inner and outer elongate bodies relative to one another.

6. The anchor inserter tool of claim 4 , wherein the actuator is pivotable relative to the handle assembly such that pivotal movement of the actuator is effective to cause axial translation of the inner and outer elongate bodies relative to one another.

7. The anchor inserter tool of claim 4 , wherein the actuator comprises at least one handle extending in a perpendicular direction from the outer elongate body.

8. The anchor inserter tool of claim 4 , wherein the actuator extends proximally from the proximal end of the outer elongate body.

9. The anchor inserter tool of claim 4 , wherein the actuator comprises at least one finger loop.

10. The anchor inserter tool of claim 1 , wherein the handle assembly has a pistol-grip configuration with a stationary housing and a pivotable trigger.

11. The anchor inserter tool of claim 1 , wherein the inner elongate body comprises a guide wire.

12. The anchor inserter tool of claim 1 , wherein the inner elongate body comprises a proximal portion extending through the outer elongate body, and a guide wire coupled to the proximal portion.

13. An anchor inserter tool, comprising:

an outer elongate member having first and second prongs extending distally from a distal end thereof and configured to extend along opposed slots formed in a sheath of an anchor assembly;

an inner elongate member disposed through the outer elongate member and having a distal end configured to engage an inner distal end of the sheath; and

a handle assembly that includes a first handle member coupled to the outer elongate member, a second handle member coupled to the inner elongate member, and a locking mechanism configured to lock the first and second handle members in a fixed position relative to one another, wherein, when the locking mechanism is in a locked position the distal end of the outer elongate member is axially aligned with the distal end of the inner elongate member, and when the locking mechanism is in an unlocked position the first handle member can move relative to the second handle member to proximally retract the distal end of the outer elongate member relative to the distal end of the inner elongate member.

14. The anchor inserter tool of claim 13 , wherein the inner elongate member is slidably disposed through the outer elongate member.

15. The anchor inserter tool of claim 13 , wherein the first handle member can move proximally relative to the second handle member.

16. The anchor inserter tool of claim 13 , wherein the first handle member moves toward the second handle member to proximally retract the distal end of the outer elongate member relative to the distal end of the inner elongate member.

17. The anchor inserter tool of claim 13 , wherein the locking mechanism pivots between locked and unlocked positions.

18. The anchor inserter tool of claim 13 , wherein the handle assembly further includes a lock shaft coupled to the locking mechanism, the first handle member, and the second handle member.

19. The anchor inserter tool of claim 18 , wherein a proximal end of the lock shaft is coupled to the locking mechanism.
