Abstract

An egg lifting device is provided. Such a device includes a body and a securing arrangement extending from the body. The securing arrangement is configured to engage and deflect about an egg such that the egg is seated within the securing arrangement for lifting thereof. A plurality of egg lifting devices are arranged on an egg removal system such that multiple eggs are capable of being removed from an egg flat. Associated systems and methods are also provided.

Claims (30)

1. An egg lifting device, comprising:

a body;

a securing arrangement extending from the body, the securing arrangement being configured to engage and deflect about an egg carried by an egg container such that the egg is seated within the securing arrangement for removal thereof from the egg container, the securing arrangement being formed of a flexible material and being resiliently deflectable to secure an egg oriented off-axis from vertical and bring the egg towards a vertical orientation; and

a release device configured to release an egg secured within the securing arrangement, the release device being configured to directly contact the egg at an end thereof to vertically displace and force the egg out of engagement with the securing arrangement.

2. An egg lifting device according to claim 1 , wherein the securing arrangement comprises a plurality of resilient members arranged and cooperating to form an open-ended arrangement through which the egg is capable of being received, as the resilient members deflect outwardly away from the egg.

3. An egg lifting device according to claim 2 , wherein each resilient member comprises a continuous wire loop structure.

4. An egg lifting device according to claim 1 , further comprising an actuator operably engaged with the body, the actuator being configured to linearly move the body and the securing arrangement extending therefrom.

5. An egg lifting device according to claim 1 , wherein the release device has a biasing member.

6. An egg lifting device according to claim 5 , wherein the release device has a release actuator configured to be pneumatically operated.

7. An egg removal system, comprising:

a frame;

a head operably engaged with the frame and configured to ascend and descend for interacting with a plurality of eggs carried by an egg container;

a plurality of egg lifting devices operably engaged with the head, each egg lifting device having a securing arrangement configured to engage and deflect about an egg carried by the egg container such that an egg is seated within the respective lifting device for removal thereof from the egg container, the securing arrangement being formed of a flexible material and being resiliently deflectable to secure an egg oriented off-axis from vertical and bring the egg towards a vertical orientation; and

wherein each egg lifting device has a release device associated therewith, each release device being configured to release an egg secured within the securing arrangement, the release device being configured to directly contact the egg at an end thereof to vertically displace and force the egg out of engagement with the securing arrangement.

8. An egg removal system according to claim 7 , wherein the securing arrangement comprises a plurality of resilient members arranged and cooperating to form an open-ended arrangement through which the egg is capable of being received, as the resilient members deflect outwardly away from the egg.

9. An egg removal system according to claim 7 , wherein each egg lifting device is operably engaged with a respective actuator extending from the head, each actuator and being configured to linearly move the securing arrangement such that the egg lifting devices are capable of ascending and descending.

10. An egg removal system according to claim 7 , further comprising an egg support assembly configured to raise each egg contained in the egg container such that the securing arrangements are capable of deflecting about the eggs for securement thereto.

11. An egg removal system according to claim 7 , wherein each release device has a biasing member.

12. An egg removal system according to claim 11 , wherein the release device has a release actuator configured to be pneumatically operated.

13. An egg removal system according to claim 7 , wherein the head comprises:

a first plate having the securing arrangements operably engaged therewith;

a second plate configured to be stationary with respect to the first plate, the second plate having the release devices operably engaged therewith; and

wherein the first plate is configured to move with respect to the second plate such that the eggs interact with the release devices when the spacing between the first and second plates decreases, thereby forcing the eggs out of engagement with the securing arrangements.

14. A method of transporting eggs from an egg container, the method comprising:

descending an egg lifting device to interact with an egg carried by an egg container;

contacting a securing arrangement of the egg lifting device with the egg, the securing arrangement being formed of a flexible material and being resiliently deflectable to secure an egg oriented off-axis from vertical and bring the egg towards a vertical orientation;

seating the egg within the securing arrangement by deflecting the securing arrangement about the egg;

ascending the lifting device so as to lift the egg from the egg container; and

directly contacting the egg at an end thereof with a release device to vertically displace and force the egg out of engagement with the securing arrangement.

15. A method according to claim 14 , further comprising the step of raising the egg out of the egg container from underneath prior to seating the egg within the securing arrangement.
