Abstract

A pole system for supporting medical equipment having a base with legs, a mast engaged to the base, and a lifting mechanism. The lifting mechanism is constructed to position the legs in an extended configuration and a retracted configuration in which the legs are raised relative to a support surface proximate to the mast.

Claims (38)

1 . A patient transport system, comprising:

a patient transport having a pole mount;

a mobile pole adapted to support patient equipment and adapted to be removably mounted to the pole mount, the mobile pole comprising:

a mast having an upper end and a lower end;

a base assembly disposed at a lower end of the mast, the base assembly comprising:

a base center fixed to the lower end of the mast;

a base support movable with respect to both the base center and the mast between a raised position and a lowered position;

a plurality of legs, each of the plurality of legs having an inner end and an outer end, the outer end of each of the plurality of legs supporting a wheel, the inner end of each of the plurality of legs pivotally attached to the base support, the outer end of each of the plurality of legs movable between an extended position and a retracted position, wherein, in the extended position, the outer end of each of the plurality of legs extends radially outwardly from the base support and each wheel is in contact with the surface, and wherein, in the retracted position, the outer end of each of the plurality of legs is drawn radially inwardly proximate to the base center and each wheel is out of contact with the surface;

a lifting mechanism which is capable of causing the mast to engage with the pole mount as the base support moves from the lowered position to the raised position while the plurality of legs move from the extended position to the retracted position;

whereby, when the base support is in the raised position, the plurality of legs are in the refracted position with the outer ends of each of the plurality of legs drawn radially inwardly proximate to the base center and out of contact with the surface and the mobile pole is suspended from the patient transport by the pole mount.

2 . The patient transport system of claim 1 wherein the pole mount is pivotable from one side of the patient transport to another side of the patient transport.

3 . The patient transport system of claim 2 wherein the pole mount is horizontally extendable with respect to the patient transport.

4 . The patient transport system of claim 1 wherein the patient transport is selected from a group comprising: a bed and a wheel chair.

5 . The patient transport system of claim 1 wherein the lifting mechanism is selected from a group comprising: a gas spring, a coil spring, a hydraulic cylinder, a pneumatic cylinder, an electric motor, and a hand crank.

6 . A method transporting patient equipment with a patient transport device, the method comprising,

positioning a pole mount attached to a patient transport;

positioning a mobile pole adapted to support patient equipment thereon, the mobile pole comprising:

a mast having an upper end and a lower end;

a base assembly disposed at a lower end of the mast, the base assembly comprising:

a base center fixed to the lower end of the mast;

a base support movable with respect to both the base center and the mast between a raised position and a lowered position;

a plurality of legs, each of the plurality of legs having an inner end and an outer end, the outer end of each of the plurality of legs supporting a wheel, the inner end of each of the plurality of legs pivotally attached to the base support, the outer end of each of the plurality of legs movable between an extended position and a retracted position, wherein, in the extended position, the outer end of each of the plurality of legs extends radially outwardly from the base support and each wheel is in contact with the surface, and wherein, in the retracted position, the outer end of each of the plurality of legs is drawn radially inwardly proximate to the base center and each wheel is out of contact with the surface;

positioning the mast in the pole mount;

actuating a lifting mechanism which causes the mast to engage with the pole mount as the base support moves from the lowered position to the raised position while the plurality of legs move from the extended position to the retracted position;

whereby when the base support is in the raised position, the plurality of legs are in the refracted position with the outer ends of each of the plurality of legs drawn radially inwardly proximate to the base center and out of contact with the surface such that the mobile pole is suspended from the patient transport by the pole mount.

7 . The method of claim 6 wherein the pole mount is pivotable from one side of the patient transport to another side of the patient transport.

8 . The method of claim 7 wherein the pole mount is horizontally extendable with respect to the patient transport.

9 . The method of claim 6 wherein the patient transport is selected from a group comprising: a bed and a wheelchair.

10 . The method of claim 6 wherein the lifting mechanism is selected from a group comprising: a gas spring, a coil spring, a hydraulic cylinder, a pneumatic cylinder, an electric motor, and a hand crank.

11 . A mobile pole for supporting patient equipment, comprising:

a mast having an upper end and a lower end;

a base assembly disposed at a lower end of the mast, the base assembly comprising:

a base center fixed to the lower end of the mast;

a base support movable with respect to both the base center and the mast between a raised position and a lowered position;

a plurality of legs, each of the plurality of legs having an inner end and an outer end, the outer end of each of the plurality of legs supporting a wheel, the inner end of each of the plurality of legs pivotally attached to the base support, the outer end of each of the plurality of legs movable between an extended position and a retracted position, wherein, in the extended position, the outer end of each of the plurality of legs extends radially outwardly from the base support and each wheel is in contact with the surface, and wherein, in the refracted position, the outer end of each of the plurality of legs is drawn radially inwardly proximate to the base center and each wheel is out of contact with the surface;

a lifting mechanism which is capable of causing the base support to move from the lowered position to the raised position;

whereby, when the base support is in the raised position, the plurality of legs are in the refracted position with the outer ends of each of the plurality of legs drawn radially inwardly proximate to the base center and out of contact with the surface.

12 . The mobile pole of claim 11 wherein the lifting mechanism is selected from a group comprising: a gas spring, a coil spring, a hydraulic cylinder, a pneumatic cylinder, an electric motor, and a hand crank.
