Abstract

A method of treating a facet joint of a patient. The facet joint has a superior facet with a superior articular face and an inferior facet with an inferior articular face. An implant delivery cannula is used to position a superior resurfacing implant and an inferior resurfacing implant between the superior articular face and the inferior articular face.

Claims (45)

1. A method of treating a facet joint of a patient, wherein the facet joint comprises a superior facet having superior articular face and an inferior facet having an inferior articular face and wherein the method comprises:

extending a distal end of an implant delivery cannula between the superior and inferior articular faces, wherein the implant delivery cannula comprises a channel extending therethrough and a shoulder mechanism fixed to and laterally extending from the implant delivery cannula proximate a distal end thereof and wherein the shoulder mechanism comprises a concave stop surface;

positioning a superior resurfacing body and an inferior resurfacing body in an adjacent relationship in the channel and proximate a distal end of a pusher tool;

maintaining lateral alignment of the distal end of the implant delivery cannula by receiving a portion of at least one of the superior facet and the inferior facet in the concave stop surface;

moving the superior and inferior resurfacing bodies through the channel with the pusher tool until the superior and inferior resurfacing bodies are between the superior and inferior articular faces while at least a portion of the superior and inferior resurfacing bodies are within the channel; and

moving the implant delivery cannula and the pusher tool away from the superior and inferior articular faces so that the superior resurfacing body is adjacent the superior articular face and the inferior resurfacing body is adjacent the inferior articular face.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the portion of the implant delivery cannula that extends between the superior and inferior articular faces comprises two deflectable guide arms and wherein the guide arms are deflected when the superior and inferior resurfacing bodies are moved into a position between the superior and inferior articular faces.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the distal end of pusher tool is shaped complementary to a portion of an edge of the superior and inferior resurfacing bodies.

The method of claim 1 , and further comprising maintaining the superior resurfacing body and the inferior resurfacing body in a position with respect to the pusher tool with an alignment guide and a recess, wherein a first one of the alignment guide or the recess is provided on the superior and inferior resurfacing bodies and a second one of the alignment guide or the recess is provided on the pusher tool and wherein the recess is adapted to receive at least a portion of the alignment guide.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the superior resurfacing body and the inferior resurfacing body each comprise an articulating surface and an engagement surface on opposite sides thereof, wherein the articulating surface is substantially smooth, wherein the engagement surface has a plurality of teeth extending therefrom, wherein the articulating surfaces on the superior resurfacing body and the inferior resurfacing body are oriented towards each other and wherein the plurality of teeth extend into the superior and inferior articular faces.

The method of claim 1 , wherein after the implant delivery cannula is moved away from the superior and inferior articular faces, the superior resurfacing body transitions from a relatively flat state to an inserted state that substantially conforms to a shape of the superior articular face in response to compressive forces of the facet joint and the inferior resurfacing body transitions from a relatively flat state to an inserted state that substantially conforms to a shape of the inferior articular face in response to compressive forces of the facet joint.

7. The method of claim 1 , and further comprising:

forming at least a portion of the superior and inferior resurfacing bodies from a radio-opaque material; and

using an imaging technique that is capable of detecting the radio-opaque material to determine a location of the superior and inferior resurfacing bodies with respect to at least one of the superior articular face and the inferior articular face.

8. A method of treating a facet joint of a patient, wherein the facet joint comprises a superior facet having superior articular face and an inferior facet having an inferior articular face and wherein the method comprises:

extending a distal end of an implant delivery cannula between the superior and inferior articular faces, wherein the implant delivery cannula has a cannula body with a channel extending therethrough, wherein distal end of the implant delivery cannula comprises two guide arms that extend from the cannula body, wherein each of the guide arms has a distal tip and wherein the guide arms are fabricated from a rigid yet flexible material;

positioning the guide arms in a first position where the distal tips are adjacent each other;

positioning a superior resurfacing body and an inferior resurfacing body in an adjacent relationship in the channel and proximate a distal end of a pusher tool;

moving the superior and inferior resurfacing bodies through the channel until the superior and inferior resurfacing bodies are between the superior and inferior articular faces;

flexing the guide arms relative to the cannula body so that the distal tips move away from each other as the superior and inferior resurfacing bodies are moved into between the superior and inferior articular faces; and

moving the implant delivery cannula and the pusher tool away from the superior and inferior articular faces so that the superior resurfacing body and the inferior resurfacing body are in an adjacent position between the superior articular face and the inferior articular face.

The method of claim 8 , wherein the superior resurfacing body and the inferior resurfacing body each comprise an articulating surface and an engagement surface on opposite sides thereof, wherein the articulating surface is substantially smooth, wherein the engagement surface has a plurality of teeth extending therefrom.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein at least a portion of the distal end of pusher tool is shaped complementary to a portion of an edge of the superior and inferior resurfacing bodies.

11. The method of claim 8 , and further comprising:

providing a shoulder mechanism mounted proximate the distal end of the implant delivery cannula, wherein the shoulder mechanism comprises a concave stop surface; and

receiving a portion of at least one of the superior facet and the inferior facet in the concave stop surface to restrict lateral movement of the distal end of the implant delivery cannula with respect to the at least one of the superior facet and the inferior facet.

The method of claim 8 , wherein after the implant delivery cannula is moved away from the superior and inferior articular faces, the superior resurfacing body transitions from a relatively flat state to an inserted state that substantially conforms to a shape of the superior articular face in response to compressive forces of the facet joint and the inferior resurfacing body transitions from a relatively flat state to an inserted state that substantially conforms to a shape of the inferior articular face in response to compressive forces of the facet joint.

13. The method of claim 8 , and further comprising:

forming at least a portion of the superior and inferior resurfacing bodies from a radio-opaque material; and

using an imaging technique that is capable of detecting the radio-opaque material to determine a location of the superior and inferior resurfacing bodies with respect to at least one of the superior articular face and the inferior articular face.

14. A method of treating a facet joint of a patient, wherein the facet joint comprises a superior facet having superior articular face and an inferior facet having an inferior articular face and wherein the method comprises:

extending a distal end of an implant delivery cannula between the superior and inferior articular faces, wherein the implant delivery cannula has a channel extending therethrough;

providing a superior resurfacing body and an inferior resurfacing body, wherein the superior resurfacing body and the inferior resurfacing body both have opposing sides and wherein the superior resurfacing body and the inferior resurfacing body both have a recess formed in a trailing edge thereof intermediate the sides of the resurfacing body;

providing a pusher tool that is capable of at least partially extending through the channel, wherein a distal end of the pusher tool has an alignment guide extending from a distal end thereof, wherein the alignment guide has a shape that is substantially complementary to a shape of the recesses in the superior resurfacing body and the inferior resurfacing body;

positioning the superior resurfacing body and the inferior resurfacing body in an adjacent relationship in the channel and proximate the distal end of the pusher tool so that the alignment guide extends into the recesses on the superior resurfacing body and the inferior resurfacing body;

moving the superior and inferior resurfacing bodies through the channel with the pusher tool until the superior and inferior resurfacing bodies are between the superior and inferior articular faces; and

moving the implant delivery cannula and the pusher tool away from the superior and inferior articular faces so that the superior resurfacing body is adjacent the superior articular face and the inferior resurfacing body is adjacent the inferior articular face.

The method of claim 14 , wherein the portion of the implant delivery cannula that extends between the superior and inferior articular faces comprises two deflectable guide arms and wherein the guide arms are deflected when the superior and inferior resurfacing bodies are moved into a position between the superior and inferior articular faces.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein at least a portion of the distal end of pusher tool is shaped complementary to a portion of an edge of the superior and inferior resurfacing bodies.

17. The method of claim 14 , and further comprising maintaining the superior resurfacing body and the inferior resurfacing body in a position with respect to the pusher tool with the alignment guide and the recess.

The method of claim 14 , wherein the superior resurfacing body and the inferior resurfacing body each comprise an articulating surface and an engagement surface on opposite sides thereof, wherein the articulating surface is substantially smooth, wherein the engagement surface has a plurality of teeth extending therefrom, wherein the articulating surfaces on the superior resurfacing body and the inferior resurfacing body are oriented towards each other and wherein the plurality of teeth extend into the superior and inferior articular faces.

The method of claim 14 , wherein after the implant delivery cannula is moved away from the superior and inferior articular faces, the superior resurfacing body transitions from a relatively flat state to an inserted state that substantially conforms to a shape of the superior articular face in response to compressive forces of the facet joint and the inferior resurfacing body transitions from a relatively flat state to an inserted state that substantially conforms to a shape of the inferior articular face in response to compressive forces of the facet joint.

20. The method of claim 14 , and further comprising:

forming at least a portion of the superior and inferior resurfacing bodies from a radio-opaque material; and

using an imaging technique that is capable of detecting the radio-opaque material to determine a location of the superior and inferior resurfacing bodies with respect to at least one of the superior articular face and the inferior articular face.
