Abstract

Systems and methods are provided for managed file transfer. An enterprise server may receive a request from a sender to send a file to a recipient and may determine a location server that is closest to the location of the recipient. A server-to-server transfer can be automatically initiated to move the file to the location server that is closest to the location of the recipient.

Claims (38)

1. A managed file transfer method, comprising:

receiving by an enterprise server a request from a sender to send a file to a recipient, the enterprise server configured for providing a plurality of server functions including a managed file transfer web service and a managed file transfer service;

the enterprise server determining a location of the recipient;

the enterprise server determining a location server that is closest to the location of the recipient; and

the enterprise server automatically initiating a server-to-server transfer to move the file to the location server that is closest to the location of the recipient,

wherein the request is received from a user device operating at a first location outside of a private network, wherein the enterprise server is hosted on one or more server machines operating outside of the private network, wherein the location server that is closest to the location of the recipient represents a tenant location server operating at a second location within the private network, and wherein the server-to-server transfer is initiated by the enterprise server to move the file from a global location server to the tenant location server operating at the second location within the private network.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the file is moved from the global location server to the tenant location server via a push operation.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the second location where the tenant location server operates is in a demilitarized zone (DMZ) of the private network.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein determination as to what constitutes a closest location server to the location of the recipient is influenced by whether a pull operation or a push operation is to be used to move the file.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining a location server that is closest to the location of the recipient comprises comparing a network address associated with the location of the recipient with ranges of network addresses handled by a plurality of location servers.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the ranges of network addresses handled by the plurality of location servers are maintained by the enterprise server operating outside of the private network.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining a location server that is closest to the location of the recipient comprises geo-locating a location server relative to the location of the recipient.

8. A system for managed file transfer, comprising:

a plurality of location servers; and

an enterprise server configured for providing a plurality of server functions including:

receiving a request from a sender to send a file to a recipient;

determining a location of the recipient;

determining a location server of the plurality of location servers that is closest to the location of the recipient; and

automatically initiating a server-to-server transfer to move the file to the location server that is closest to the location of the recipient,

wherein the request is received from a user device operating at a first location outside of a private network, wherein the enterprise server is hosted on one or more server machines operating outside of the private network, wherein the location server that is closest to the location of the recipient represents a tenant location server operating at a second location within the private network, and wherein the server-to-server transfer is initiated by the enterprise server to move the file from a global location server to the tenant location server operating at the second location within the private network.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the file is moved from the global location server to the tenant location server via a push operation.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the second location where the tenant location server operates is in a demilitarized zone (DMZ) of the private network.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein determination as to what constitutes a closest location server to the location of the recipient is influenced by whether a pull operation or a push operation is to be used to move the file.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein determining a location server that is closest to the location of the recipient comprises comparing a network address associated with the location of the recipient with ranges of network addresses handled by the plurality of location servers.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the ranges of network addresses handled by the plurality of location servers are maintained by the enterprise server operating outside of the private network.

14. The system of claim 8 , wherein determining a location server that is closest to the location of the recipient comprises geo-locating a location server relative to the location of the recipient.

15. A computer program product for managed file transfer, the computer program product comprising at least one non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions translatable by at least one processor of an enterprise server to perform:

receiving a request from a sender to send a file to a recipient;

determining a location of the recipient;

determining a location server that is closest to the location of the recipient; and

automatically initiating a server-to-server transfer to move the file to the location server that is closest to the location of the recipient,

wherein the request is received from a user device operating at a first location outside of a private network, wherein the enterprise server is hosted on one or more server machines operating outside of the private network, wherein the location server that is closest to the location of the recipient represents a tenant location server operating at a second location within the private network, and wherein the server-to-server transfer is initiated by the enterprise server to move the file from a global location server to the tenant location server operating at the second location within the private network.

16. The computer program product of claim 15 , wherein the file is moved from the global location server to the tenant location server via a push operation.

17. The computer program product of claim 15 , wherein determination as to what constitutes a closest location server to the location of the recipient is influenced by whether a pull operation or a push operation is to be used to move the file.

18. The computer program product of claim 15 , wherein determining a location server that is closest to the location of the recipient comprises comparing a network address associated with the location of the recipient with ranges of network addresses handled by a plurality of location servers.

19. The computer program product of claim 18 , wherein the ranges of network addresses handled by the plurality of location servers are maintained by the enterprise server operating outside of the private network.

20. The computer program product of claim 18 , wherein determining a location server that is closest to the location of the recipient comprises geo-locating a location server relative to the location of the recipient.

21. The computer program product of claim 18 , wherein the at least one non-transitory computer readable medium storing further instructions translatable by the at least one processor of the enterprise server to perform notifying the recipient that the file is ready for download.
