Abstract

Methods and apparatus are described for facilitating communication among a plurality of entities via an interoperability network. Each entity has policy data corresponding thereto governing interaction with the entity via the interoperability network. A message is transmitted from a first one of the entities to a second one of the entities. The first entity has first policy data corresponding thereto and the second entity has second policy data corresponding thereto. The transmitted message was handled in the network according to combined policy data representing a combination of the first and second policy data.

Claims (49)

1. A method performed by a computer processor, the method comprising:

retrieving, from a network server, at least one policy from a data exchange document, the data exchange document defining multiple policies and avoiding redundancy among the multiple policies;

implementing the at least one policy for facilitating communication among a plurality of entities of a network, the entities including network component receivers, wherein:

the at least one policy is associated with a first entity of the plurality of entities and describes communication requirements of at least one entity of the plurality of entities, and

the at least one policy relates to requirements of the communication;

evaluating, during run time, content of the communication associated with the at least one policy;

determining whether the content is associated with a policy violation, based on the at least one policy; and

generating and transmitting, by a processor of an entity of the network, a policy violation message corresponding to the policy violation, the processor generating and transmitting the policy violation message by executing code stored in a memory of the entity of the network.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one policy is associated with policy data.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the policy data relates to any of security, message format, network protocols, routing, organizations, users and roles.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of entities is comprised of computing platforms.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one entity of the plurality of entities includes a service.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one entity of the plurality of entities includes an application.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one policy relates to a network.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one policy includes metadata.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one policy is configured by a user.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one policy is associated with a selected scope.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the scope is selected by a user.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one policy is extended.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein an existing portion of the at least one policy is extended.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the extension of the at least one policy is required.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one policy controls a manner in which entities of the plurality of entities interact.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one policy controls a manner in which the first entity interacts with a second entity of the plurality of entities.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the first entity includes a first appliance.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the second entity is external to the first appliance.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the second entity includes a process.

20. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium impressed with computer instructions, the instructions, when executed on a processor, implement a method comprising:

retrieving, from a network server, at least one policy from a data exchange document, the data exchange document defining multiple policies and avoiding redundancy among the multiple policies;

implementing the at least one policy for facilitating communication among a plurality of entities of a network, the entities including network component receivers, wherein:

the at least one policy is associated with a first entity of the plurality of entities and describes communication requirements of at least one entity of the plurality of entities, and

the at least one policy relates to requirements of the communication;

evaluating, during run time, content of the communication associated with the at least one policy;

determining whether the content is associated with a policy violation, based on the at least one policy; and

generating and transmitting, by a processor of an entity of the network, a policy violation message corresponding to the policy violation, the processor generating and transmitting the policy violation message by executing code stored in a memory of the entity of the network.

21. The computer program product of claim 20 , wherein the at least one policy is associated with policy data.

22. The computer program product of claim 21 , wherein the policy data relates to any of security, message format, network protocols, routing, organizations, users and roles.

23. The computer program product of claim 20 , wherein the plurality of entities is comprised of computing platforms.

24. A system, comprising:

an entity of a plurality of entities of a network, the entity including a processor configured to:

retrieve, from a network server, at least one policy from a data exchange document, the data exchange document defining multiple policies and avoiding redundancy among the multiple policies;

implement the at least one policy for facilitating communication among the plurality of entities of the network, the entities including network component receivers, wherein:

the at least one policy is associated with a first entity of the plurality of entities and describes communication requirements of at least one entity of the plurality of entities, and

the at least one policy relates to requirements of the communication;

evaluate, during run time, content of the communication associated with the at least one policy;

determine whether the content is associated with a policy violation, based on the at least one policy; and

generate and transmit a policy violation message corresponding to the policy violation, the processor generating and transmitting the policy violation message by executing code stored in a memory of the entity of the network.

25. The system of claim 24 , wherein the at least one policy is associated with policy data.

26. The system of claim 25 , wherein the policy data relates to any of security, message format, network protocols, routing, organizations, users and roles.

27. The system of claim 24 , wherein the plurality of entities is comprised of computing platforms.
