Abstract

A method for managing applications configured for execution on a mobile device is provided. The method includes receiving one or more network access requests from one or more applications executing on the mobile device, determining that the mobile device is operating in a background mode, suppressing transmission to a network of the one or more network access requests based on the determination, and transmitting a subset of the one or more network access requests upon transition out of the background mode.

Claims (42)

1. A mobile device configured for aligning data transfer from the mobile device to optimize connections made by the mobile device in a wireless network, the mobile device comprising:

a memory;

a backlight

a radio; and

a processor, the mobile device configured to:

while the backlight of the mobile device is on:

detect that a first application is executing in a background of the mobile device;

detect that a second application is executing in a foreground of the mobile device;

batch a first set of data for the first application;

transmit the first set of batched data for the first application; and

transmit data for the second application at a time when the second application requests transmission;

while the backlight of the mobile device is off in response to inactivity of the mobile device:

detect that the second application is executing in the background of the mobile device;

batch a second set of data for the first application and the second application; and

transmit the second set of batched data for the first application and the second application, wherein the transmission of the second set of batched data occurs after at least a predetermined period of time.

2. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein, the second set of batched data for the first application and second application is transmitted in a single transaction over a single instantiation of wireless network connectivity at the mobile device.

3. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein, the second set of data is batched within a time window which is dynamically adjustable.

4. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the mobile device is further configured to: generate an application profile including characteristics of a user's activity; and initiate transmission of the second set of batched data based on the application profile.

5. The mobile device of claim 4 , wherein generating the application profile includes identifying, determining, inferring, detecting, computing, predicting, or anticipating characteristics of user activity on the mobile device.

6. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein, while the backlight of the mobile device is off, the second set of data is not batched when the mobile device is plugged in to a power source.

7. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the mobile device is further configured to receive a message while the backlight of the mobile device is off, wherein the predetermined period of time is not based on receipt of the message.

8. The mobile device of claim 7 , wherein the mobile device is further configured to maintain a connection for receipt of the message.

9. The mobile device of claim 8 , wherein the message is a high priority message.

10. A method comprising:

while a backlight of a mobile device is on:

detecting that a first application is executing in a background of the mobile device;

detecting that a second application is executing in a foreground of the mobile device;

batching a first set of data for the first application;

transmitting the first set of batched data for the first application; and

transmitting data for the second application at a time when the second application requests transmission;

while the backlight of the mobile device is off in response to inactivity of the mobile device:

detecting that the second application is executing in the background of the mobile device;

batching a second set of data for the first application and the second application; and

transmitting the second set of batched data for the first application and the second application, wherein the transmission of the second set of batched data occurs after at least a predetermined period of time.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the second set of batched data for the first application and the second application is transmitted in a single transaction over a single instantiation of wireless network connectivity at the mobile device.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein batching the second set of data for the first application and the second application occurs within a time window which is dynamically adjustable.

13. The method of claim 10 , further comprising generating an application profile that includes characteristics of a user's activity, further comprising initiating transmission of the second set of batched data based on the application profile.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein generating the application profile further includes identifying, determining, inferring, detecting, computing, predicting, or anticipating characteristics of user activity on the mobile device.

15. The method of claim 10 , wherein, while the backlight of the mobile device is off, the second set of data is not batched when the mobile device is plugged in to a power source.

16. The method of claim 10 , further comprising transmitting the second set of batched data during a predetermined period of time and receiving a message while the backlight of the mobile device is off, wherein the predetermined period of time is not based on receipt of the message.

17. The method of claim 16 , further including maintaining a connection for receipt of the message.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the message is a high priority message.
