Abstract

A system and method for analyzing images to optimize orthopaedic functionality at a site within a patient, including obtaining at least a first, reference image of the site, or a corresponding contralateral site, the first image including at least a first anatomical region or a corresponding anatomical region. At least a second, intra-operative results image of the site is obtained. At least one stationary base with at least two base points is selected to serve as a reference for both images during analysis including at least one of scaling, calculations, and image comparisons.

Claims (22)

1. A system having one or more computers to analyze images at a surgical site within a patient, the one or more computers performing the following steps:

acquiring a preoperative image of the surgical site;

acquiring an intraoperative image of the surgical site, wherein the intraoperative image depicts at least a portion of a first implanted device at its implanted location;

selecting a digital template image of the first implanted device, wherein the digital template image is a digital representation of the first implanted device;

superimposing the digital template image of the first implanted device on the intraoperative image of the surgical site, such that the digital template image directly overlays the first implanted device shown in the intraoperative image;

digitally registering a first anatomical landmark point on the intraoperative image of the surgical site;

digitally registering the first anatomical landmark point on the preoperative image of the surgical site; and

superimposing the digital template image of the first implanted device onto the preoperative image of the surgical site and orienting the superimposed digital template image of the first implanted device with respect to the first anatomical landmark point, such that the digital template image in the preoperative image is positioned in the same anatomical location as depicted in the intraoperative image.

2. The system of claim 1 , further including the step of analyzing the first implanted device's effect on at least one parameter of at least one bone of the patient.

3. The system of claim 1 , further including the step of digitally registering a first stationary base point on an anatomical feature that is present in each of the preoperative and intraoperative images.

4. The system of claim 3 , further including the step of digitally registering a second stationary base point on an anatomical feature that is present in each of the preoperative and intraoperative images.

5. The system of claim 4 , further including the steps of scaling and rotating the preoperative and intraoperative images such that the first and second stationary base points are aligned when the preoperative and intraoperative images are in overlaying relation.

6. The system of claim 1 , further including the step of digitally registering a line extending across one or more anatomical features that is present in each of the preoperative and intraoperative images.

7. The system of claim 1 , further including the steps of:

selecting a digital template image of a second implanted device that is depicted in the intraoperative image;

superimposing the digital template image of the second implanted device on the intraoperative image of the surgical site, such that the digital template image of the second implanted device directly overlays the second implanted device shown in the intraoperative image;

digitally registering a second anatomical landmark point on the intraoperative image of the surgical site;

digitally registering the second anatomical landmark point on the preoperative image of the surgical site; and

superimposing the digital template image of the second implanted device onto the preoperative image of the surgical site and orienting the superimposed digital template image of the second implanted device with respect to the second anatomical landmark point, such that the digital template image in the preoperative image is positioned in the same anatomical location as depicted in the intraoperative image; and

analyzing the second implanted device's effect on at least one parameter of at least one bone of the patient.

8. The system of claim 7 , further including the steps of substituting the digital template image of the second implanted device that is superimposed on the preoperative image for a digital template of a comparable implantable device to determine if a particular parameter of the bone of the patient better reflects the particular parameter of the bone of the patient as depicted in the preoperative image when the comparable implantable device replaces the second implanted device.

9. The system of claim 1 , further including the steps of substituting the digital template image of the first implanted device that is superimposed on the preoperative image for a digital template of a comparable implantable device to determine if a particular parameter of the bone of the patient better reflects the particular parameter of the bone of the patient as depicted in the preoperative image when the comparable implantable device replaces the first implanted device.
