Abstract

A method of detecting detachment of an ostomy device from a patient includes providing, in the ostomy device, a first electrode separated from the patient by an adhesive that attaches the ostomy device to the patient, where a first capacitor is formed between the first electrode and the patient. The method includes applying a signal to an electrical circuit that includes the first capacitor, and detecting changes in a capacitance value of the first capacitor based on frequency responses of the electrical circuit to the signal. The method additionally includes activating an alarm based upon detecting the changes in the capacitance value of the first capacitor.

Claims (59)

1. A method of detecting detachment of an ostomy device from a patient, comprising:

providing, in the ostomy device, a first electrode separated from the patient by at least an adhesive that attaches the ostomy device to the patient, wherein a first capacitor is formed between the first electrode and the patient;

applying a signal to an electrical circuit that includes the first capacitor;

detecting changes in a capacitance value of the first capacitor based on frequency responses of the electrical circuit to the signal; and

activating an alarm based upon detecting the changes in the capacitance value of the first capacitor.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein detecting changes comprises monitoring a resonance frequency of the electrical circuit.

3. The method of claim 1 , comprising:

providing an inductor that forms an electric resonance circuit with the first capacitor.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein detecting changes comprises monitoring a resonance frequency of the electric resonance circuit.

5. The method of claim 3 , comprising:

coupling a reader inductively to the inductor of the electric resonance circuit for applying the signal and detecting the changes.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

applying a signal comprises performing a frequency sweep in the signal at regular intervals; and

detecting changes comprises monitoring the frequency responses of the electrical circuit while performing the frequency sweep.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

applying a signal comprises applying an electrical impulse to the electrical circuit; and

detecting changes comprises monitoring the frequency responses of the electrical circuit to the electrical pulse.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein detecting changes comprises:

coupling an astable multivibrator to the first capacitor; and

counting, repetitively, the number of output pulses from the astable multivibrator within a predetermined time interval.

9. The method of claim 1 , comprising:

coupling one of a Colpitts oscillator and a Hartley oscillator to the first capacitor; and

counting, repetitively, the number of output pulses from the one of the Colpitts oscillator and the Hartley oscillator within a predetermined time interval.

10. A method of detecting detachment of an ostomy device from a patient, comprising:

providing, in the ostomy device, a first electrode, a second electrode, and a coil separated from the patient by at least an adhesive that attaches the ostomy device to the patient, wherein a first capacitor is formed between the first electrode and the patient, a second capacitor is formed between the second electrode and the patient, and an inductor is formed between the first capacitor and the second capacitor by the coil;

applying a signal to an electrical circuit that includes the first capacitor, the second capacitor, and the inductor;

monitoring frequency responses of the electrical circuit to detect changes in at least one capacitance value of the first capacitor and the second capacitor; and

activating an alarm in response to detecting the changes in the at least one capacitance value.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein monitoring frequency responses comprises monitoring a resonance frequency of the electrical circuit.

12. The method of claim 10 , comprising:

coupling a reader inductively to the inductor of the electrical circuit for applying the signal and monitoring the frequency responses.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein:

applying a signal comprises performing a frequency sweep in the signal at regular intervals; and

monitoring frequency responses comprises monitoring the frequency responses of the electrical circuit while performing the frequency sweep.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein:

applying a signal comprises applying an electrical impulse to the electrical circuit; and

monitoring frequency responses comprises monitoring the frequency responses of the electrical circuit to the electrical pulse.

15. The method of claim 10 , wherein monitoring frequency responses comprises:

coupling at least one of an astable multivibrator, a Colpitts oscillator, and a Hartley oscillator to the first capacitor and the second capacitor; and

counting, repetitively, the number of output pulses within a predetermined time interval.

16. A method of manufacturing an ostomy device having a leak sensor comprising:

providing a layer having a first surface and a second surface that opposes the first surface;
