Abstract

This application describes surgical instruments and implants for building a posterior fixation construct across one or more segments of the spinal column. More specifically, the application describes instruments and methods for building a posterior fixation construct across one or more segments of the spinal column in a minimally invasive fashion.

Claims (26)

1. A spinal fixation system for fixing a spinal segment that includes two adjacent vertebral structures and an intervertebral space between them, comprising:

a pair of anchor assemblies, each anchor assembly having a housing member, a threaded shaft, and a locking cap, the housing member having a rod channel between a pair of upstanding arms, the upstanding arms each having a slot formed in an outside surface thereof;

an elongated spinal rod dimensioned to connect the pair of anchor assemblies when one anchor assembly from the pair is implanted in each of the adjacent vertebral structures;

a pair of guide assemblies, each guide assembly coupleable to one of the anchor assembly housing members, the guide assembly extending proximally from the housing member;

a compression system configured to manipulate the guide assemblies to impart compression or distraction to the spinal segment, said compression system comprising:

a pivot tool having a pivot handle and a pivot paddle situated distally to the pivot handle, the pivot paddle having an enclosed perimeter and first and second openings defined within the enclosed perimeter, each of the first opening and the second opening dimensioned to receive and constrain one of the guide assemblies; and

a rotation tool having a rotation handle and a rotation paddle situated distally to the rotation handle, the rotation paddle having an enclosed perimeter and third and fourth openings defined within the enclosed perimeter, the third opening dimensioned to receive and constrain one of the guide assemblies, and the fourth opening dimensioned to receive the other of the guide assemblies while permitting movement of the guide assembly within the fourth opening.

2. The spinal fixation system of claim 1 , wherein the first, second, and third openings are circular openings and the fourth opening is an elliptical opening.

3. The spinal fixation system of claim 1 , wherein the pivot tool includes a pivot stem situated between and connecting the pivot handle and the pivot paddle.

4. The spinal fixation system of claim 3 , wherein the pivot handle includes a contoured gripping surface for handling by a user.

5. The spinal fixation system of claim 1 , wherein the pivot handle has a first longitudinal axis, the pivot paddle has a second longitudinal axis, the rotation handle has a third longitudinal axis, and the rotation paddle has a fourth longitudinal axis.

6. The spinal fixation system of claim 5 , wherein the first longitudinal axis is coaxial with the second longitudinal axis.

7. The spinal fixation system of claim 5 , wherein the third longitudinal axis is transverse to the fourth longitudinal axis.

8. The spinal fixation system of claim 5 , wherein the first longitudinal axis is coaxial with the second longitudinal axis and the third longitudinal axis is transverse to the fourth longitudinal axis.

9. The spinal fixation system of claim 5 , wherein the first opening and the second opening are aligned along the second longitudinal axis with the first opening situated distally to the second opening.

10. The spinal fixation system of claim 5 , wherein the third opening and the fourth opening are aligned along the fourth longitudinal axis with the third opening situated distally to the fourth opening.

11. The spinal fixation system of claim 5 , wherein the first opening and the second opening are aligned along the second longitudinal axis with the first opening situated distally to the second opening, and the third opening and the fourth opening are aligned along the fourth longitudinal axis with the third opening situated distally to the fourth opening.

12. The spinal fixation system of claim 1 , wherein the pivot paddle enclosed perimeter is elliptical in shape.

13. The spinal fixation system of claim 1 , wherein the rotation paddle enclosed perimeter is elliptical in shape.

14. The spinal fixation system of claim 1 , wherein each of the pivot paddle and rotation handle enclosed perimeters are elliptical in shape.

15. The spinal fixation system of claim 1 , wherein the enclosed perimeter of the pivot paddle is configured to open to facilitate receipt of the guide assemblies therein.

16. The spinal fixation system of claim 15 , wherein the pivot paddle includes a first arm and a second arm coupled together about a hinge.

17. The spinal fixation system of claim 16 , wherein the hinge is situated distally to the first and second openings.

18. The spinal system of claim 17 , wherein the pivot handle includes extensions of the first and second arms.

19. The spinal fixation system of claim 1 , wherein the rotation tool defines a rotation axis that extends through the third opening and perpendicular to the third longitudinal axis and wherein rotation of the rotation tool rotates the fourth opening about the rotation axis.

20. The spinal fixation system of claim 19 , wherein the rotation axis extends through the first opening and is coaxial with a longitudinal axis of one from the pair of guide assemblies that is received in each of the first and third openings.
