Abstract

Occlusion devices, earpiece devices and methods of occluding an ear canal are provided. An occlusion device includes an insertion element, a foldable element and an expandable element. The foldable element is disposed on the insertion element and is configured to receive a medium via the insertion element. The expandable element is disposed over the foldable element. The foldable element is configured to unfold, responsive to the medium, and cause the expandable element to expand to contact the ear canal.

Claims (37)

1. An occlusion device configured to occlude an ear canal comprising:

an insertion element;

a foldable element disposed on the insertion element and configured to receive a medium via the insertion element; and

an expandable element disposed over the foldable element;

wherein the foldable element is configured to unfold upon receiving the medium and the expandable element is configured to expand when the foldable element unfolds;

wherein the foldable element has a different Young's modulus than a Young's modulus of the expandable element.

2. The occlusion device of claim 1 , wherein the expandable element and the foldable element are formed of a stiff material characterized by a Young's modulus forming a balloon and an effective acoustical capacitance of the stiff material is approximated from a ratio using the Young's modulus of the stiff material.

3. The occlusion device of claim 2 , wherein an effective acoustical capacitance of the stiff material is approximated from a ratio comprising an initial balloon radius squared times an internal tube area of a tube containing the balloon divided by 2 times an initial material thickness of the balloon times the Young's modulus for the stiff material.

4. The occlusion device of claim 1 , wherein the expandable element and the foldable elements are formed of an elastic material forming a balloon and an effective acoustical capacitance of the elastic material is determined by modeling the balloon as a Mooney-Rivlin material.

5. The occlusion device according to claim 4 , wherein the effective acoustical capacitance of the elastic material is approximated from a ratio comprising an internal tube area of a tube containing the balloon times an initial balloon radius squared divided by 2 times a Mooney-Rivlin parameter times an initial material thickness of the balloon made of elastic material.

6. The occlusion device according to claim 1 , wherein physical parameters are selected to produce a predetermined sound attenuation characteristic over a frequency band.

7. The occlusion device according to claim 6 , wherein the predetermined sound attenuation characteristic is adjustable based on an amount of the medium provided in a space between the foldable element and the insertion element.

8. The occlusion device of claim 1 , wherein the foldable element is constructed of a first material and the expandable element is constructed of a second material, the first material having a higher Young's modulus than the second material.

9. The occlusion device of claim 1 , wherein the expandable element, in unstretched form, has a thickness of from about 0.1 to about 0.5 mm.

10. The occlusion device of claim 1 , wherein the foldable element has a thickness of from about 0.05 to about 2 mil (about 1 to about 50 microns).

11. The occlusion device according to claim 1 , wherein the medium is selected from the group consisting of fluorinated morpholines, liquid siloxanes, and fluorohydrocarbons.

12. The occlusion device according to claim 1 , wherein the foldable element is impermeable to the medium.

13. The occlusion device according to claim 1 , wherein the foldable element when fully unfolded in the absence of the expandable element defines a volume V 1 between an inner surface of the foldable element and an outer surface of the insertion element, the expandable element when expanded to a minimum extent necessary to bring an outer periphery of the expandable element into contact with the ear canal defines a volume V 2 between an inner surface of the expandable element and the outer surface of the insertion element, and V 1 is greater than V 2 .

14. The occlusion device according to claim 1 , wherein the expandable element is comprised of a foam material.

15. An earpiece device configured to occlude an ear canal comprising:

a housing unit; and

an occlusion section configured to be inserted into the ear canal, the occlusion section comprising:

an insertion element coupled to the housing unit;

a foldable element disposed on the insertion element and configured to receive a medium via the insertion element; and

an expandable element disposed over the foldable element, wherein the foldable element is configured to unfold upon receiving the medium and cause the expandable element to expand to contact the ear canal; and

wherein the foldable element has a different Young's modulus than a Young's modulus of the expandable element.

16. The earpiece device according to claim 15 , wherein the expandable element and the foldable element are formed of a stiff material characterized by a Young's modulus forming a balloon and an effective acoustical capacitance of the stiff material is approximated from a ratio using the Young's modulus of the stiff material.

17. The earpiece device according to claim 16 , wherein:

the housing unit includes an inflation management system,

the insertion element includes a pneumatic channel coupled between the inflation management system and the foldable element, the medium being transferred to the foldable element from the inflation management system via the pneumatic channel,

wherein the inflation management system adjusts a predetermined sound attenuation characteristic based on an amount of the medium provided in a space between the foldable element and the insertion element.

18. The earpiece device according to claim 15 , wherein the housing unit includes a transducer, and the insertion element includes an acoustic channel coupled between the transducer and the ear canal.

19. The earpiece device according to claim 15 , wherein the housing unit includes a communication unit configured to communicate with a device remote from the earpiece device.

20. A method of occluding an ear canal, the method comprising:

placing an occlusion device within the ear canal, the occlusion device including an insertion element, a foldable element disposed on the insertion element and an expandable element disposed over the folded element, the foldable element configured to receive a medium via the insertion element in a space between the insertion element and the foldable element; and

introducing the medium into the space between the insertion element and the foldable element, causing the folded element to unfold and causing the expandable element to expand to contact the ear canal; and

wherein the foldable element has a different Young's modulus than a Young's modulus of the expandable element.
