Abstract

A system and method for the relevance driven aggregation of content items in a social network includes obtaining, with a processor, from each of a plurality of content item sources, at least some of a plurality of content items of the plurality of content item sources. An aggregated content item is made up of a set of the plurality of content items is generated based, at least in part, on a utility value of each of the some of the plurality of content items. A utility value of the aggregated content item is determined. A user interface displays the aggregated content item based on the utility value of the aggregated content item.

Claims (35)

1 . A system, comprising:

a network interface configured to communicate with a user device via a network;

an electronic data storage including a plurality of content item sources, each of the content item sources including a plurality of content items ranked according to one of a plurality of ranking schemas, at least two of the plurality of content items sources utilizing different ones of the plurality of ranking schemas; and

a processor, configured to:

obtain, from each of the plurality of content item sources, at least some of the plurality of content items of the plurality of content item sources;

generate an aggregated content item made up of a set of the plurality of content items based, at least in part, on a utility value of each of the some of the plurality of content items;

determine a utility value of the aggregated content item; and

cause a user interface to display the aggregated content item based on the utility value of the aggregated content item.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein processor is further configured to:

rank the aggregated content item relative to other ones of the plurality of content items based on the utility value; and

display the aggregated content item relative to the other ones of the plurality of content items based on the rank.

3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to generate the aggregated content item by comparing a utility value of the aggregated content item against utility values of individual ones of the set of the plurality of content items.

4 . The system of claim 3 , wherein the processor is further configured to generate a preliminary aggregated content item based on at least some of the plurality of content items, and wherein the processor is configured to generate the aggregated content item by removing individual ones of the at least some of the plurality of content items having a higher utility value than a preliminary utility value of the preliminary aggregated content item.

5 . The system of claim 4 , wherein the processor if further configured to iteratively update the preliminary utility value based on individual ones of the at least some of the plurality of content items being removed from the aggregated content item and removing individual ones of the at least some of the plurality of content items having a higher utility value than a preliminary utility value of the preliminary aggregated content item as updated.

6 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to determine the utility value of the aggregated content item based on a statistical distribution of utility values of the set of the plurality of content items.

7 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the statistical distribution is at least one of a standard deviation, an average, a maximum, and a minimum.

8 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to determine the utility value of the aggregated content item based, at least in part, on a statistical distribution of individual times that individual ones of the set of the plurality of content items have been incorporated in the content item sources.

9 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the statistical distribution is at least one of a standard deviation, an average, a maximum, and a minimum.

10 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

cause the user device to display individual ones of the plurality of content items; and

determine the utility value of the aggregated content item based, at least in part, on an overall number of the plurality of content items displayed on the user device.

11 . A method, comprising:

obtaining, with a processor, from each of a plurality of content item sources, at least some of a plurality of content items of the plurality of content item sources, each of the content items of the plurality of content item sources being ranked within their respective content item sources according to one of a plurality of ranking schemas, at least two of the plurality of content items sources utilizing different ones of the plurality of ranking schemas;

generating, with the processor, an aggregated content item made up of a set of the plurality of content items based, at least in part, on a utility value of each of the some of the plurality of content items;

determining, with the processor, a utility value of the aggregated content item; and

causing, with the processor, a user interface to display the aggregated content item based on the utility value of the aggregated content item.

12 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising ranking, with the processor, the aggregated content item relative to other ones of the plurality of content items based on the utility value, and wherein causing, with the processor, the user interface to display the aggregated content item is relative to the other ones of the plurality of content items based on the rank.

13 . The method of claim 11 , wherein generating the aggregated content item is by comparing a utility value of the aggregated content item against utility values of individual ones of the set of the plurality of content items.

14 . The method of claim 13 , further comprising generating, with the processor, a preliminary aggregated content item based on at least some of the plurality of content items, and wherein generating the aggregated content item is by removing individual ones of the at least some of the plurality of content items having a higher utility value than a preliminary utility value of the preliminary aggregated content item.

15 . The method of claim 14 , further comprising iteratively updating, with the processor, the preliminary utility value based on individual ones of the at least some of the plurality of content items being removed from the aggregated content item and removing individual ones of the at least some of the plurality of content items having a higher utility value than a preliminary utility value of the preliminary aggregated content item as updated.

16 . The method of claim 11 , wherein determining the utility value of the aggregated content item is based on a statistical distribution of utility values of the set of the plurality of content items.

17 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the statistical distribution is at least one of a standard deviation, an average, a maximum, and a minimum.

18 . The method of claim 11 , wherein determining the utility value of the aggregated content item is based, at least in part, on a statistical distribution of individual times that individual ones of the set of the plurality of content items have been incorporated in the content item sources.

19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein the statistical distribution is at least one of a standard deviation, an average, a maximum, and a minimum.

20 . The method of claim 11 , wherein causing, with the processor, the user device to display the aggregated content item further includes displaying individual ones of the plurality of content items, and wherein determining the utility value of the aggregated content item is based, at least in part, on an overall number of the plurality of content items displayed on the user device.
