Abstract

There is provided a method for use in a user equipment when the user equipment is in idle mode or any other low activity state, and when the user equipment bandwidth is smaller than the cell transmission bandwidth. The method comprises the steps of determining a paging position of the user equipment in the frequency domain; receiving, from the network, paging information within the user equipment reception bandwidth; and changing, if indicated by the network, the paging position of the user equipment within the cell transmission bandwidth.

Claims (30)

1. A method implemented by a user equipment (UE), the method comprising:

the UE determining a paging position in the frequency domain for the UE, wherein the paging position is less than or equal to a first frequency bandwidth, the first frequency bandwidth is less than or equal to a reception bandwidth of the UE, the first frequency bandwidth is less than a cell transmission bandwidth of a cell, and the paging position in the frequency domain is determined as a function of a UE identifier (UE ID) associated with the UE and a number of available paging positions within the transmission bandwidth of the cell;

the UE monitoring for paging indications at the determined paging position; and

the UE receiving a first paging indication at the determined paging position.

2. The method as in claim 1 , further comprising the UE receiving a paging message within the reception bandwidth of the UE.

3. The method as in claim 1 , further comprising the UE receiving a system information broadcast that indicates the number of available paging positions within the transmission bandwidth of the cell.

4. The method as in claim 1 , wherein the function used by the UE to determine the paging position in the frequency domain corresponds to a hash function, and the UE ID associated with the UE and the number of available paging positions within the transmission bandwidth of the cell are inputs to the hash function.

5. The method as in claim 1 , wherein the UE ID corresponds to an International mobile subscriber identity (IMSI) associated with the UE.

6. The method as in claim 1 , wherein multiple repetitions of the paging indication are received.

7. The method as in claim 1 , wherein the function used by the UE to determine the paging position in the frequency domain corresponds to the equation k =(UE_ID) mod N, where k represents a positioning index for the paging position in the frequency domain, UE_ID represents the UE ID associated with the UE, and N represents the number of available paging positions within the transmission bandwidth of the cell.

8. The method as in claim 1 , wherein each of the available paging positions within the transmission bandwidth of the cell corresponds to a bandwidth that is less than the transmission bandwidth of the cell and are associated with respective positioning index.

9. The method as in claim 1 , wherein the paging indication is received while the UE is in idle mode.

10. A user equipment (UE) comprising:

a processor configured to determine a paging position in the frequency domain as a function of a UE identifier (UE ID) associated with the UE and a number of available paging positions within a transmission bandwidth of a cell;

a receiver configured to be tuned to a frequency associated with the paging position, wherein the paging position is less than or equal to a first frequency bandwidth, the first frequency bandwidth is less than or equal to a reception bandwidth of the UE, and the first frequency bandwidth is less than the transmission bandwidth of the cell; and

the processor further configure to:

monitor, via the receiver, for paging indications at the determined paging position, and

receive, via the receiver, a first paging indication at the determined paging position.

11. The UE as in claim 10 , wherein the processor is configured to monitor for paging indications while operating in IDLE mode.

12. The UE as in claim 10 , wherein the processor is further configured to receive, via the receiver, a system information broadcast that indicates the number of available paging positions within the transmission bandwidth of the cell.

13. The UE as in claim 10 , wherein the function that the processor is configured to use to determine the paging position in the frequency domain comprises a modulus operation, and UE ID associated with the UE and the number of available paging positions within the transmission bandwidth of the cell are inputs to the function comprising the modulus operation.

14. The UE as in claim 10 , wherein the UE ID corresponds to an International mobile subscriber identity (IMSI) associated with the UE.

15. The UE as in claim 10 , wherein the function that the processor is configured to use to determine the paging position in the frequency domain corresponds to the equation k =(UE_ID) mod N, where k represents a positioning index for the paging position in the frequency domain, UE_ID represents the UE ID associated with the UE, and N represents the number of available paging positions within the transmission bandwidth of the cell.

16. The UE as in claim 10 , wherein the processor is configured to receive each of the first paging indication and a first paging message without having to re-tune the receiver.

17. The UE as in claim 10 , wherein the processor is configured to monitor for paging indications while performing discontinuous reception (DRX).

18. The UE as in claim 10 , wherein the processor is configured to receive, via the receiver, multiple repetitions of a paging message.

19. A base station configured to:

determine a paging position in the frequency domain for a User Equipment (UE) for a cell served by the base station, wherein the paging position is less than or equal to a first frequency bandwidth, the first frequency bandwidth is less than or equal to a reception bandwidth of the UE, the first frequency bandwidth is less than a cell transmission bandwidth of the cell, and the paging position in the frequency domain is determined as a function of a UE identifier (UE ID) associated with the UE and a number of available paging positions within the transmission bandwidth of the cell; and

send a first paging indication to the UE at the determined paging position.

20. The base station as in claim 19 , wherein the base station is further configured to broadcast system information that is indicative of the number of available paging positions within the transmission bandwidth of the cell.
