Abstract

A radio frequency amplification stage comprising: an amplifier for receiving an input signal to be amplified and a power supply voltage; and a power supply voltage stage for supplying said power supply voltage, comprising: means for providing a reference signal representing the envelope of the input signal; means for selecting one of a plurality of supply voltage levels in dependence on the reference signal; and means for generating an adjusted selected power supply voltage, comprising an ac amplifier for amplifying a difference between the reference signal and one of the selected supply voltage level or the adjusted selected supply voltage level, and a summer for summing the amplified difference with the selected supply voltage to thereby generate the adjusted supply voltage.

Claims (17)

1. A power supply stage, comprising:

a combiner configured to combine a switched supply signal with a correction signal, and configured to generate a corrected supply signal;

a correction stage, coupled to the combiner, configured to generate the correction signal in dependence on a difference between a reference signal and the corrected supply signal; and

a supply stage, coupled to the correction stage, configured to provide the switched supply signal,

wherein the supply stage is configured to provide the switched supply signal independent of the correction signal.

2. The power supply stage of claim 1 wherein the supply stage includes a selection block configured to select one of a plurality of power supplies as the switched supply signal in dependence on the reference signal.

3. The power supply stage of claim 2 , wherein the selection block is adapted to select a power supply having a power supply voltage above and below the reference signal.

4. An envelope tracking power amplification system comprising the power supply stage of claim 1 , and further including an envelope detector, coupled to the supply stage, configured to detect an envelope of an input signal and configured to generate the reference signal in dependence thereon, and an amplifier, coupled to the correction stage, configured to amplify the input signal, and in which the corrected supply signal is provided to a power supply input of the amplifier.

5. The envelope tracking power amplification system of claim 4 in which the amplifier is a radio frequency power amplifier and the input signal is a radio frequency signal.

6. A method of controlling a power supply stage, comprising:

combining, by a combiner, a switched supply signal with a correction signal to generate a corrected supply signal;

generating, by a correction stage, the correction signal in dependence on a difference between a reference signal and the corrected supply signal; and

providing, by a supply stage, the switched supply signal independent of the correction signal.

7. The method of claim 6 further comprising selecting one of a plurality of power supplies as the switched supply signal in dependence on the reference signal.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising selecting a power supply having a power supply voltage above and below the reference signal.

9. A method of controlling an envelope tracking power amplification system comprising the method of claim 6 , and further comprising detecting an envelope of an input signal for generating the reference signal in dependence thereon, amplifying the input signal with an amplifier, and providing the corrected supply signal to a power supply input of the amplifier.

10. The method of claim 9 in which the amplifier is a radio frequency power amplifier and the input signal is a radio frequency signal.
