Abstract

A dissecting tip is provided for use with a surgical stapler or instrument. In one embodiment, the dissecting tip is secured to the end effector of the surgical instrument, e.g., to the cartridge assembly. The dissecting tip extends distally from the end effector and is configured to dissect or separate target tissue from certain tissue, e.g., adherent, connective, joined or other tissue.

Claims (12)

1. A stapling device including an end effector having an anvil assembly and a cartridge assembly, the cartridge assembly housing a plurality of rows of staples, the anvil assembly having a dissecting tip at a distal end thereof, the cartridge assembly and the anvil assembly having an open position and an approximated position, the dissecting tip having an inner surface that extends downwardly toward the cartridge assembly to a location beyond the plurality of rows of staples, the dissecting tip being arranged so that it does not extend below a plane defined by a bottom surface of the cartridge assembly and does not extend outwardly beyond sidewalls of the cartridge assembly, wherein a width of the dissecting tip continuously decreases along a length of the dissecting tip.

2. The stapling device according to claim 1 , wherein the end effector forms part of a disposable loading unit or single use loading unit.

3. The stapling device according to claim 1 , wherein the cartridge assembly has a distal angled surface guide.

4. The stapling device according to claim 3 , wherein a space between the dissecting tip and the distal angled surface guide is at least the same as or greater than a gap between a tissue contacting surface of the anvil assembly and a tissue contacting surface of the cartridge assembly when the anvil assembly and the cartridge assembly are in the approximated position.

5. The stapling device according to claim 1 , wherein the dissecting tip defines an angle of between about 95 degrees and about 135 degrees.

6. The stapling device according to claim 1 , wherein the dissecting tip has a blunt tip.

7. The stapling device according to claim 1 , wherein the width of the dissecting tip decreases from a proximal portion of the dissecting tip to a distal end of the dissecting tip.

8. The stapling device according to claim 1 , wherein the dissecting tip has a smooth, curved outer surface.

9. A stapling device including an end effector having an anvil assembly and a cartridge assembly, the cartridge assembly housing a plurality of rows of staples and including an angled tissue guide surface, the anvil assembly having a dissecting tip at a distal end thereof, the cartridge assembly and the anvil assembly having an open position and an approximated position, the dissecting tip having an inner surface that extends downwardly toward the cartridge assembly to a location beyond the plurality of rows of staples, the dissecting tip being arranged so that it does not extend below a plane defined by a bottom surface of the cartridge assembly and does not extend outwardly beyond sidewalls of the cartridge assembly, wherein the inner surface of the dissecting tip extends parallel to the angled tissue guide surface of the cartridge assembly when the cartridge and anvil assemblies are in the approximated position.

10. The stapling device according to claim 9 , wherein the dissecting tip has a blunt tip.

11. The stapling device according to claim 9 , wherein the dissecting tip has a width, the width decreasing from a proximal portion of the dissecting tip to a distal end of the dissecting tip.

12. The stapling device according to claim 9 , wherein the dissecting tip has a smooth, curved outer surface.
