Abstract

An apparatus for cone beam computed tomography of an extremity has a digital radiation detector and a first device to move the detector along a circular detector path extending so that the detector moves both at least partially around a first extremity of the patient and between the first extremity and a second, adjacent extremity. The detector path has radius R 1 sufficient to position the extremity approximately centered in the detector path. There is a radiation source with a second device to move the source along a concentric circular source path having a radius R 2 greater than radius R 1 , radius R 2 sufficiently long to allow adequate radiation exposure of the first extremity for an image capture by the detector. A first circumferential gap in the source path allows the second extremity to be positioned in the first circumferential gap during image capture.

Claims (33)

1. An apparatus for cone beam computed tomographic imaging of one extremity of a patient, the apparatus comprising:

a digital radiation detector;

a detector mechanism attached to the detector and configured to move the detector along a detector path, a shape of the detector path comprising a first circular arc, the detector path defining a detector axis whereat at least a portion of the one extremity of the patient is positioned to be imaged by the apparatus;

a radiation source; and

a source mechanism attached to the source and configured to move the source along a source path, a shape of the source path comprising a second circular arc, the source path defining a source plane and a source axis, the source axis coaxial with the detector axis,

wherein a distance from the detector path to the detector axis is shorter than a distance from the source path to the source axis, and wherein the one extremity of the patient is positioned at the detector axis by moving at least a portion of the one extremity of the patient through a gap in the second circular arc.

The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus is configured to allow the one extremity of the patient to be positioned at the detector axis by moving at least the portion of the one extremity of the patient through the gap in a direction substantially perpendicular to the source axis and parallel to the source plane.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the source mechanism includes a rigid C-shaped assembly to provide mechanical support for the source as the source is moved along the source path.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the detector mechanism includes the rigid C-shaped assembly to provide mechanical support for the detector as the detector is moved along the detector path.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a gap in the C-shaped assembly configured to allow the one extremity of the patient to be positioned at the detector axis by moving said at least a portion of the one extremity of the patient through the gap in the C-shaped assembly.

The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the source mechanism further includes a source support arm, a proximate end of the source support arm attached to the C-shaped assembly and a distal end of the source support arm attached to the source to provide mechanical support for the source as the source is moved along the source path.

7. The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the detector path includes a gap in the first circular arc, and wherein at least a portion of the gap in the first circular arc is diametrically opposite at least a portion of the gap in the second circular arc.

8. The apparatus of claim 5 , further comprising a C-shaped housing to enclose the source and the source mechanism as the source moves along the source path and to enclose the detector and the detector mechanism as the detector moves along a portion of the detector path.

The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the C-shaped housing comprises a housing gap configured to allow the one extremity of the patient to be positioned at the detector axis by moving the at least a portion of the one extremity of the patient through the housing gap in a direction substantially perpendicular to the detector axis.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a C-shaped housing to enclose the source, the source mechanism, the detector, and the detector mechanism, the C-shaped housing comprising:

a housing gap configured to allow the one extremity of the patient to be positioned at the detector axis by moving the at least a portion of the one extremity of the patient through the housing gap in a direction substantially perpendicular to the detector axis; and

a cover configured to controllably extend across the housing gap to enclose the detector as the detector moves along the detector path across the housing gap.

11. An apparatus for cone beam computed tomographic imaging of one extremity of a patient, the apparatus comprising:

a digital radiation detector configured to move around a central axis along a detector path at a first radial distance from the central axis;

a radiation source configured to move around the central axis along a source path simultaneously with the movement of the detector along the detector path, the source path at a second radial distance from the central axis, the second radial distance greater than the first radial distance; and

a C-shaped housing configured to enclose the source as the source moves around the source path and to enclose the detector as the detector moves around a portion of the detector path, the housing comprising a gap configured to allow the one extremity of the patient to be positioned at the central axis by moving the at least a portion of the one extremity of the patient through the housing gap in a direction substantially perpendicular to the central axis; and

a cover configured to controllably extend across the housing gap to enclose the detector as the detector moves along the detector path across the housing gap.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , further comprising a source mechanism within the C-shaped housing, the source mechanism including a C-shaped turntable attached to the source to provide mechanical support for the source and to move the source along the source path.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , further comprising a detector mechanism within the C-shaped housing, the detector mechanism attached to the C-shaped turntable to provide mechanical support for the detector and to move the detector along the detector path.

14. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the cover is further configured to retract to allow the one extremity of the patient to be positioned at the central axis by moving the at least a portion of the one extremity of the patient through the housing gap.

15. An apparatus for cone beam computed tomographic imaging of one extremity of a patient, the apparatus comprising:

a digital radiation detector and a radiation source configured to simultaneously move around a central axis whereat at least a portion of the one extremity of the patient is positioned to be imaged by the apparatus;

a C-shaped housing configured to enclose the source as the source moves around the central axis and to enclose the detector for a portion of the distance that the detector moves around the central axis, the housing comprising a gap configured to allow the one extremity of the patient to be positioned at the central axis by moving at least a portion of the one extremity of the patient through the housing gap; and

a cover configured to controllably extend across the housing gap to enclose the detector when the detector moves around the central axis across the housing gap,

wherein the detector is configured to move around the central axis at a first distance therefrom, the source is configured to move around the central axis at a second distance therefrom, and wherein the first distance is less than the second distance.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the cover is configured to controllably extend across the housing gap after the one extremity of the patient is positioned at the central axis.

17. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the cover is further configured to controllably retract away from the housing gap.

18. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the cover is configured to controllably extend across the housing gap between the legs of the patient after one leg of the patient is positioned at the central axis.
