Abstract

A UE initiates an MMTEL service in RRC Idle mode in a mobile communication network. The UE acquires access control information from a base station. The access control information comprises SSAC configuration information, ACB parameters information, and ACB bypass information. The ACB bypass information indicates whether ACB is applicable to MMTEL service type. The UE then performs SSAC check for the MMTEL service based on the access control information. The UE also performs ACB check for the MMTEL service if ACB is applicable to the MMTEL service. Otherwise, the UE bypasses the ACB check for the MMTEL service. The selective ACB mechanism can prioritize or deprioritize services based on operator's requirement.

Claims (26)

1. A method comprising:

initiating an IP Multimedia Subsystem multimedia telephony (MMTEL) service by a user equipment (UE) in a mobile communication network;

acquiring access control information from a base station, wherein the access control information indicates whether access control barring (ACB) is applicable to an MMTEL service type;

performing a service specific access control (SSAC) check for the MMTEL service and also determining whether ACB is applicable to the MMTEL service based on the access control information; and

performing an access class barring (ACB) check and the SSAC check for the MMTEL service when ACB is applicable to the MMTEL service based on the access control information, wherein the access control information comprises SSAC information, ACB information, and ACB bypass information, and wherein the ACB bypass information contains three bits indicating whether ACB is applicable to an MMTEL service subtype including MMTEL voice, video, and text respectively.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the ACB bypass information is embedded within the ACB information that contains a predefined ACB barring value indicating whether ACB is applicable to MMTEL service.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the ACB bypass information is embedded within the SSAC information that contains an indication on whether ACB is applicable to MMTEL service.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the UE comprises a NAS layer and an AS layer, wherein the NAS layer forwards MMTEL service type indication to the AS layer for determining whether to bypass ACB.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the UE comprises a NAS layer and an AS layer, wherein the AS layer forwards ACB bypass information to the NAS layer for determining whether to bypass ACB.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: performing random access with a backoff value to establish an RRC connection for the MMTEL service.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the backoff value is different for different service types.

8. A user equipment (UE), comprising:

an application layer circuit that initiates an lP Multimedia Subsystem multimedia telephony (MMTEL) service in a mobile communication network;

a radio frequency (RF) receiver that receives access control information from a base station, wherein the access control information indicates whether access control barring (ACB) is applicable to MMTEL, service type;

a service specific access control (SSAC) circuit that performs an SSAC check for the MMTEL service based on the access control information; and

an access class barring (ACB) circuit that determines whether ACB is applicable to the MMTEL service, wherein the UE performs both the SSAC check and an ACB check for the MMTEL service when ACB is applicable to the MMTEL service based on the access control information, wherein the access control information comprises SSAC information, ACB information, and ACB bypass information, and wherein the ACB bypass information contains three bits indicating whether ACB is applicable to an MMTEL service subtype including MMTEL voice, video, and text respectively.

9. The UE. of claim 8 , wherein the UE comprises a NAS layer and an AS layer, wherein the NAS layer forwards MMTEL service type indication to the AS layer for determining whether to bypass ACB.

10. The UE of claim 8 , wherein the UE comprises a NAS layer and an AS layer, wherein the AS layer forwards ACB bypass information to the NAS layer for determining whether to bypass ACB.

11. A method, comprising:

transmitting access control information from a base station to a user equipment (UE) in a mobile communication network, wherein the access control information indicates whether access control barring (ACB) is applicable to an MMTEL service type, and wherein the access control information comprises SSAC information, ACB information, and ACB bypass information such that both SSAC check and ACB check can be performed when ACB is applicable to the MMTEL service type, wherein the ACB bypass information contains three bits indicating whether ACB is applicable to an MMTEL service subtype including MMTEL voice, video, and text respectively;

receiving a random access preamble from the UE; and

transmitting a random access response (RAR) to the UE, wherein the RAR comprises information on a random access backoff value.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the ACB bypass information is embedded within the ACB information that contains a predefined ACB barring value indicating whether ACB is applicable to MMTEL service.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the ACB bypass information is embedded within the SSAC information that contains an indication on whether ACB is applicable to MMTEL service.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the backoff value is different for different service types.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the backoff value is carried by a control element (CE) in the RAR.
