Devices and methods for minimally invasive access into a joint
View Patent ↗Devices and methods are disclosed for providing access to a central compartment of a hip joint. The devices can access the central compartment by distracting all or a portion of the labrum. The labrum can be distracted by advancing a device underneath the bottom edge of the labrum, and using the device to further distract the labrum. Some devices can move underneath the labrum to provide a gap for other devices to access the central compartment.
1. A method for creating an intraspace within a hip joint surrounded by a capsule, wherein the hip joint comprises an acetabulum surrounded by an acetabular labrum and a femoral head received within the acetabulum, and the intraspace is defined between articulating surfaces of the femoral head and the acetabulum, the method comprising:
inserting an elongated hollow structure through the capsule of the hip joint and into the intraspace between the femoral head and the acetabulum, said elongated hollow structure consisting of one selected from a cannulated needle and a catheter; and
introducing a fluid under pressure through the elongated hollow structure and into the intraspace between the femoral head and the acetabulum so as to break a suction seal established by the acetabular labrum and force the femoral head away from the acetabulum, wherein the fluid exits the elongated hollow structure and directly contacts and bears against the articulating surfaces of the femoral head and the acetabulum to break the suction seal established by the acetabular labrum and force the femoral head away from the acetabulum.
2. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the fluid comprises a liquid.
3. A method according to claim 2 , wherein the liquid comprises saline.
4. A method according to claim 2 , wherein the liquid comprises water.
5. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the fluid comprises a gas.
6. A method according to claim 5 , wherein the gas comprises air.
7. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the elongated hollow structure is advanced through the capsule and under the labrum so as to enter the intraspace of the hip joint.
8. A method according to claim 1 , further comprising advancing a balloon catheter into the intraspace between the forced femoral head and the acetabulum so as to further distract the hip joint.
9. A method according to claim 1 , further comprising applying external traction to a location remote from the hip joint so as to further distract the hip joint.
10. A method according to claim 9 , wherein the external traction is applied to the leg.
