Abstract

A soundhead of a treatment device is provided that enables a volume of tissue located beneath the soundhead to simultaneously receive ultrasound and light stimulation. According to one embodiment, the soundhead includes an ultrasound transducer, a light source, and a faceplate extending across a face of the transducer for providing a tissue contacting and ultrasound energy coupling surface of the soundhead. The faceplate is transparent or translucent to the light generated by the light source. Alternate embodiments including externally mounted light sources are also disclosed.

Claims (18)

1. A method for treating tissue with a treatment device that includes an opto-acoustic material, the method comprising:

contacting the opto-acoustic material with the tissue;

generating ultrasound with the treatment device;

generating light with the treatment device;

directing the ultrasound and the light through the opto-acoustic material and into the tissue during contact of the opto-acoustic material with the tissue; and

coincidently treating the tissue with both the ultrasound and the light generated by the treatment device to provide a combination therapeutic effect to the tissue.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the therapeutic effect applied to the tissue is enhanced by having the ultrasound and the light coincident at the tissue being treated.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tissue to be treated includes an outermost surface, and contacting the opto-acoustic material with the tissue further comprises:

contacting the opto-acoustic material with the outermost surface of the tissue so as to position the treatment device at an area where the tissue is to be treated.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the ultrasound generated by the treatment device is therapeutic ultrasound, and the light generated by the treatment device is therapeutic light.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tissue includes a wound, and the therapeutic effect is effective to repair the wound.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tissue includes a surgical wound, and the therapeutic effect is effective to repair the surgical wound.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tissue comprises a non-melanoma skin cancer that receives treatment with the ultrasound and the light.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tissue comprises acne that receives treatment with the ultrasound and the light.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tissue is photorejuvenated by receiving treatment with the ultrasound and the light.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein a permeability of the tissue is changed.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

topically applying a drug before performing treatment of the tissue with the ultrasound and the light.
