Abstract

Systems and methods for an edge of network voltage control of a power grid are described. A system includes a distribution power network, a plurality of loads (at or near an edge of the distribution power network), and a plurality of shunt-connected, switch-controlled volt ampere reactive (VAR) sources also located at the edge or near the edge of the distribution power network where they may each detect a proximate voltage. The VAR source can determine whether to enable a VAR compensation component therein based on the proximate voltage and adjust network VAR by controlling a switch to enable the VAR compensation component. Further still, each of the VAR sources may be integrated within a customer-located asset, such as a smart meter, and a multitude of such VAR sources can be used to effectuate a distributed controllable VAR source (DCVS) cloud network.

Claims (19)

1. A system comprising:

a distribution power network;

a plurality of loads at an edge of the distribution power network, each of the plurality of loads configured to receive power from the distribution power network;

a voltage ampere reactive (VAR) network comprising a plurality of distributed controllable VAR sources (DCVS's), wherein each of the plurality of DCVS's is integrated into a customer-located asset at or proximate to each of the plurality of loads, and wherein each of the plurality of DCVS's is configured to detect a voltage proximate to the edge of the distribution power network and make a determination to enable a VAR compensation component implemented therein to regulate the voltage;

wherein each of the plurality of DCVS's comprises a DCVS module, the DCVS module comprising a shunt-connected, switch-controlled VAR source including a processor and the VAR compensation component, the DCVS module adapted to, subsequent to detection of the voltage proximate to the edge of the distribution power network, enable the DCVS module to determine, after a delay, whether to enable the VAR compensation component based on the proximate voltage and to adjust network VAR by controlling a switch to enable the VAR compensation component based on the determination;

wherein the delay associated with each DCVS is not equal to the delay associated with any other of the plurality of DCVS's.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of DCVS's further comprises a customer-located asset module, the customer-located asset module including:

a sensing and signal conditioning module adapted to measure at least one of voltage across the customer-located asset module and current flowing through the customer-located asset module, and condition signals representative of the measured voltage and current;

a processor module adapted to determine a plurality of parameters based on at least one of the measured voltage and current;

a memory module adapted to store the plurality of parameters and the measured voltage and current;

a communication module adapted to at least one of receive and transmit data related to respective operations of each of the plurality of DCVS's; and

a direct current (DC) power supply and conditioning module adapted to provide power to the sensing and signal conditioning module, the processor module, the memory module, and the communication module.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the data related to the respective operations of each of the plurality of DCVS's comprises at least one of a voltage set point, the measured voltage and current, diagnostic information, and timestamp information.

4. The system of claim 2 , wherein the communication module is adapted to effectuate communication of the data between the DCVS module and the customer-located asset module.

5. The system of claim 2 , wherein each of the plurality of DCVS's further comprises a surge protection module adapted to protect the DCVS module and the customer-located asset module from overvoltage.

6. The system of claim 2 , wherein the plurality of loads include at least one of a commercial structure, a residential structure, an industrial structure, and a service transformer, and wherein the customer-located asset module comprises at least one of a smart meter module, an energy management module, and a temperature management module.

7. The system of claim 2 , wherein the plurality of loads include electric vehicles, and wherein the customer-located asset comprises an electric vehicle module.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of DCVS's is coupled to a power supply, the power supply comprising one of an electric utility, a micro-grid, or a power supply bus.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of DCVS's is controlled in accordance with a distributed algorithm configured to prevent infighting between adjacent DCVS's and provide rapid and dynamic response.
