Abstract

A minimally invasive system and method for providing weight loss by inducing the feeling of satiety whereby an intragastric device is inserted into the gastric lumen via the esophagus and an external magnetic device is used as needed to magnetically attract the intragastric device towards the inner wall of the stomach and impart tactile stimulation sufficient to induce the feeling of satiety.

Claims (24)

1. A method of inducing a feeling of satiety comprising the steps of:

a) transesophageal insertion of a deployable intragastric device containing magnetic material into a stomach;

b) deploying said intragastric device within said stomach, wherein said intragastric device is not attached to said stomach; and

c) positioning a magnetic external device in close enough proximity to said intragastric device to create a sufficient magnetic pulling force between said external device and said intragastric device to move said intragastric device towards, and impart stimulating force upon, a stomach wall of said stomach, wherein said external device is attached to a zipper and a patient positions said external device by moving said zipper to induce a feeling of satiety.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein said stimulating force is applied for a therapeutically sufficient period of time to induce satiety.

3. The method of claim 1 further including adjustment of said stimulating force applied by said intragastric device to the stomach wall by altering a position of said external device relative to a position of said intragastric device.

4. The method of claim 1 further including adjusting an orientation of said intragastric device by altering the orientation of said external device.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein a fundus is a region of the stomach targeted for stimulation.

6. The method of claim 1 further including exposing said external device to at least one compound of high magnetic permeability to:

a) prevent interference with, or attraction to, other magnetically sensitive objects, or

b) adjust an attractive force applied to said intragastric device by diverting said external device's magnetic field away from said intragastric device.

7. A satiety inducing system comprising:

a) a transorally administered intragastric device comprising at least one type of magnetic material, at least one surface capable of deployment inside of a stomach, wherein said intragastric device is equipped to impart tactile stimulation upon a stomach wall of said stomach, and wherein said intragastric device is not attached to said stomach; and

b) an external device positioned outside of a patient's body comprising a sufficient amount of magnetic material to attract said transorally administered intragastric device from outside the patient's body, wherein said external device is attached to a zipper and the patient positions said external device by moving said zipper to induce a feeling of satiety.

8. The intragastric device of claim 7 wherein an orientation of said external device's magnetic material is unfixed and allowed to pivot or rotate relative to the position of said intragastric device.

9. The system of claim 7 wherein said external device is integral to a piece of apparel.

10. The system of claim 7 wherein said intragastric device is a frustacone-shaped.

11. The intragastric device of claim 7 further including a fluid bladder that can be inflated to deploy said intragastric device.

12. The intragastric device of claim 7 wherein said magnetic material is unrestrained and confined within a fluid bladder or sealed compartment.

13. The intragastric device of claim 7 further including a biocompatible dye confined within a fluid bladder or sealed compartment.

14. The intragastric device of claim 7 wherein said magnetic material comprises iron, steel, or neodymium.

15. The system of claim 7 wherein the surface of said intragastric device is textured.

16. The intragastric device of claim 7 further including a resilient mesh embedded in or attached to said intragastric device.

17. The intragastric device of claim 7 further including at least one suture loop embedded in said intragastric device.
