USER BASED LICENSING FOR APPLICATIONS
A method, system, and computer-readable storage media for providing user based licensing of an application are provided herein. The method includes receiving user log-in information from a computing device at a licensing service in response to an input by a user and providing a license for an application to the computing device, wherein the license includes device specific information associated with the user. The method also includes activating the application on the computing device using the device specific information.
1 - 20 . (canceled)
21 . A method for providing authorized access to an application, comprising:
receiving log-in information from a computing device at a licensing service in response to an input by a user;
providing a license to activate the application to the computing device from the licensing service if the application has a licensing service signature that matches to the licensing service, wherein the license comprises device specific information associated with the user;
periodically determining a state of the license in response to a request received from the computing device, wherein the request comprises a license state check performed at a configurable time period specified by the conditions of the license; and
adjusting a condition of the license according to the state of the license.
22 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the license provided to the computing device has a time valid start and a time valid end so that a license is to expire even without verification of expiration from the licensing service.
23 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the license is to synchronize a license deprovision time for the application on a device that shares the application license with the computing device.
24 . The method of claim 21 , comprising providing an additional response to the license state check that is to inform the computing device of impending deactivation.
25 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the license for the application deactivates based on a total time of use of the application, a time since last renewal of license, a time since connection to the licensing service, or any combination thereof.
26 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the licensing service returns a response to the license state check that is to indicate a valid license only for a number of times the application is used.
27 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the license provided to the computing device performs the license state check asynchronously from a core system of the computing device.
28 . The method of claim 21 , comprising allowing the user to use the application on the computing device for a specified period of time without connecting the computing device to the licensing service.
29 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the log-in information comprises user log-in information for the licensing service.
30 . A system for providing user based licensing of an application, comprising:
a server communicatively coupled to a server computing device, the server comprising a processing device to carry out operations of a licensing service configured to:
receive log-in information from a computing device at the licensing service in response to an input by a user;
provide a license for the application to the computing device, wherein the license comprises device specific information and an offline grace period, wherein the device specific information is used to activate the application on the computing device;
determine periodically a state of the license from the licensing service in response to a request from the computing device, wherein the request comprises a license state check performed at a configurable time period specified by a condition of the license;
adjust the condition of the license according to the state of the license; and
provide deactivation information for the application after the offline grace period has elapsed if the state of the license cannot be determined during the offline grace period.
31 . The system of claim 30 , wherein the license provided to the computing device synchronizes the state of the license between connected devices.
32 . The system of claim 30 , wherein the license provided to the computing device has a time valid start and a time valid end so that licensing is to expire even without verification of expiration from the licensing service.
33 . The system of claim 30 , wherein the license is to synchronize a license deprovision time for the application on a device that shares the application license with the computing device.
34 . The system of claim 30 , wherein the operations of the licensing service are to provide an additional response to the license state check that informs of impending deactivation.
35 . The system of claim 30 , wherein the license for the application deactivates based on a total time of use of the application, a time since last renewal of license, a time since connection to the licensing service, or any combination thereof.
36 . A system for providing user based licensing of an application, comprising:
a server communicatively coupled to a server computing device, the server comprising a processing device to carry out operations of a licensing service configured to:
receiving log-in information from a computing device at a licensing service in response to an input by a user;
providing a license to activate the application to the computing device from the licensing service if the application has a licensing service signature that matches to the licensing service, wherein the license comprises device specific information associated with the user;
periodically determining a state of the license in response to a request received from the computing device, wherein the request comprises a license state check performed at a configurable time period specified by the conditions of the license; and
adjusting a condition of the license according to the state of the license.
37 . The system of claim 36 , wherein the license provided to the computing device synchronizes the state of the license between connected devices.
38 . The system of claim 36 , wherein the license provided to the computing device has a time valid start and a time valid end so that a license is to expire even without verification of expiration from the licensing service.
39 . The system of claim 36 , wherein the license is to synchronize a license deprovision time for the application on a device that shares the application license with the computing device.
40 . The system of claim 36 , comprising providing an additional response to the license state check that is to inform the computing device of impending deactivation.
