Abstract

Flame resistant compositions may include compositions of nylon-6 (PA 6) or nylon-6,6 (PA 66) and melamine cyanurate, glass beads and glass fibers, and the compositions may be produced and used for production of products for the electrical industry, preferably electrical components, such as residual current circuit breakers and other circuit breakers.

Claims (72)

1. A composition comprising:

A) >46 to 96.9 wt % nylon 6 and/or nylon 6.6,

B) 10 to 40% by weight of a spherical filler and reinforcer, made of glass, and having a median particle size of 7 μm to 250 μm,

C) 4 to 6% by weight of chopped long glass fibres having an original length of 1 mm to 50 mm, and

D) 0.1 to 40% by weight of melamine cyanurate.

2. The composition according to claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises:

A) >46 to 80% by weight of the nylon 6 and/or nylon 6.6,

B) 10 to 40% by weight of the spherical filler and reinforcer,

C) 4 to 6% by weight of the chopped long glass fibres, wherein the fibres have a diameter of 7 to 18 μm, and

D) 0.1 to 20% by weight of the melamine cyanurate wherein the melamine cyanurate has a median particle diameter of 0.1 μm to 100 μm,

wherein the sum total of all the percentages by weight is always 100%.

The composition according to claim 2 , wherein, in addition to components A), B), C) and D), the composition further comprises E) 0.01% to 30% by weight of titanium dioxide, based on the overall composition, in which case the levels of the other components are reduced to such an extent that the sum total of all the percentages by weight is always 100%.

4. The composition according to claim 2 , wherein, in addition to components A), B), C) and D), the composition further comprises:

F) 0.01% to 5% by weight, based on the overall composition, of at least one lubricant and/or demoulding agent, and

optionally E) 0.01% to 30% by weight of titanium dioxide, based on the overall composition,

in which case the levels of the other components are reduced to such an extent that the sum total of all the percentages by weight is always 100%.

5. The composition according to claim 2 , wherein, in addition to components A, B), C) and D), the composition further comprises:

G) 0.01% to 10% by weight, based on the overall composition, of at least one laser absorber selected from a group that includes antimony trioxide, tin oxide, tin orthophosphate, barium titanate, aluminium oxide, copper hydroxyphosphate, copper orthophosphate, potassium copper diphosphate, copper hydroxide, antimony tin oxide, bismuth trioxide and anthraquinone, and

optionally at least one of:

E) 0.01% to 30% by weight of titanium dioxide, based on the overall composition, and

F) 0.01% to 5% by weight, based on the overall composition, of at least one lubricant and/or demouldlng agent,

in which case the levels of the other components are reduced to such an extent that the sum total of all the percentages by weight is always 100%.

6. The composition according to claim 2 , wherein, in addition to components A), B), C) and D), the composition further comprises:

H) 0.01% to 60% by weight, based on the overall composition, of at least one further flame retardant other than melamine cyanurate, and

optionally at least one of:

E) 0.01% to 30% by weight of titanium dioxide, based on the overall composition,

F) 0.01% to 5% by weight, based on the overall composition, of at least one lubricant and/or demoulding agent, and

G) 0.01% to 10% by weight, based on the overall composition, of at least one laser absorber selected from a group that includes antimony trioxide, tin oxide, tin orthophosphate, barium titanate, aluminium oxide, copper hydroxyphosphate, copper orthophosphate, potassium copper diphosphate, copper hydroxide, antimony tin oxide, bismuth trioxide and anthraquinone,

in which case the levels of the other components are reduced to such an extent that the sum total of all the percentages by weight is always 100%.

7. The composition according to claim 6 , wherein the at least one further flame retardant comprises a halogen-free and/or phosphorus-free flame retardant.

8. The composition according to claim 2 , wherein, in addition to components A), B), C) and D), the composition further comprises:

K) 0.01% to 50% by weight, based on the overall composition, of at least one filler different from components B) and C), and

optionally at least one of:

E) 0.01% to 30% by weight of titanium dioxide, based on the overall composition,

F) 0.01% to 5% by weight, based on the overall composition, of at least one lubricant and/or demoulding agent,

G) 0.01% to 10% by weight, based on the overall composition, of at least one laser absorber selected from a group that includes antimony trioxide, tin oxide, tin orthophosphate, barium titanate, aluminium oxide, copper hydroxyphosphate, copper orthophosphate, potassium copper diphosphate, copper hydroxide, antimony tin oxide, bismuth trioxide and anthraquinone, and

H) 0.01% to 60% by weight, based on the overall composition, of at least one further flame retardant other than melamine cyanurate,

in which case the levels of the other components are reduced to such an extent that the sum total of all the percentages by weight is always 100%.

9. The composition according to claim 2 , wherein, in addition to components A), B), C) and D), the composition further comprises:

L) 0.01% to 20% by weight, based on the overall composition, of at least one further additive, and

optionally at least one of:

E) 0.01% to 30% by weight of titanium dioxide, based on the overall composition,

F) 0.01% to 5% by weight, based on the overall composition, of at least one lubricant and/or demoulding agent,

G) 0.01% to 10% by weight, based on the overall composition, of at least one laser absorber selected from a group that includes antimony trioxide, tin oxide, tin orthophosphate, barium titanate, aluminium oxide, copper hydroxyphosphate, copper orthophosphate, potassium copper diphosphate, copper hydroxide, antimony tin oxide, bismuth trioxide and anthraquinone,

H) 0.01% to 60% by weight, based on the overall composition, of at least one further flame retardant other than melamine cyanurate, and

K) 0.01% to 50% by weight, based on the overall composition, of at least one filler different from components B) and C),

wherein the at least one further additive is different from any of components D), E), F), G), H), and K), and

in which case the levels of the other components are reduced to such an extent that the sum total of all the percentages by weight is always 100%.

10. The composition according to claim 1 , wherein component B) comprises glass beads of soda-lime glass, soda-lime-silica glass or boroslicate glass.

11. The composition according to claim 10 , wherein the glass beads are hollow or solid.

12. The composition according to claim 1 , wherein a surface of component B) Is surface-modified or sized.

13. The composition according to claim 12 , wherein the surface of component B) is modified with silanes or siloxanes.

14. The composition according to claim 13 , wherein the surface of component B) is modified with aminoalkyl-, glycidyl ether-, alkenyl-, acryloyoxyalkyl- and/or methacryoyloxyalkyl-functionallzed trialkoxysilanes and combinations thereof.

15. The composition according to claim 14 , wherein component B) is sized in amounts of 0.01% by weight to 1.5% by weight, based on the amount of component B).

16. The composition according to claim 15 , wherein:

the nylon 6 and nylon 6,6 comprises 3 to 11 methylene groups for each polyamide group in the polymer,

the surface of component B) is modified with aminoalkyltrialkoxysilanes, and the composition comprises:

A) >46% to 80% by weight of the nylon 6 and/or the nylon 6,6,

B) 10% to 40% by weight of the spherical filler and reinforcer, and the spherical filer and reinforcer have a particle size of 11 μm to 60 μm,

C) 4% to 6% by weight of the chopped long glass fibres, and the chopped long glass fibers have a starting length of 2 mm to 7 mm, and a diameter of 9 to 15 μm, and

D) 0.1% to 20% by weight of the melamine cyanurate, wherein the melamine cyanurate has a median particle diameter of 0.1 μm to 7 μm.

17. A method for the production of electrical components from the composition according to claim 16 , the method comprising forming at least a portion of the electrical components from the composition according to claim 16 .

18. A process for producing products from the composition according to claim 1 , the process comprising at least one of injection moulding, extruding or blow moulding the composition of claim 1 to form at least a portion of the products.

19. The process according to claim 18 , wherein the products are electrical components.

20. The composition according to claim 2 , wherein, in addition to components A) to D), the composition further comprises:

H) 0.01% to 60% by weight of ethylenebisstearylamide, and

L) 0.01% to 20% by weight of 3,3′-bis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-N,N′-hexamethylenedipropionamlde,

in which case the levels of the other components are reduced to such an extent that the sum total of all the percentages by weight is always 100%.

21. The composition according to claim 16 , wherein, in addition to components A) to D), the composition further comprises:

H) 5% to 25% by weight of ethylenebisstearylamide, and

L) 0.1% to 5% by weight, of 3,3′-bis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-N,N′-hexamethylenedipropionamide,

in which case the levels of the other components are reduced to such an extent that the sum total of all the percentages by weight is always 100%.
