Abstract

In one embodiment, a system includes a processor and a memory to store data used by the processor, wherein the processor is operative to update a count of how many times a video sequence has been identified in at least one video stream, check if the count has exceeded a limit, and in response to the count exceeding the limit, send a message to a user interface module indicating that the video sequence should be manually reviewed and tagged with metadata. Related apparatus and methods are also described.

Claims (46)

1 . A system comprising a processor; and a memory to store data used by the processor, wherein the processor is operative to:

update a count of how many times a video sequence has been identified in at least one video stream;

check if the count has exceeded a limit; and

in response to the count exceeding the limit, send a message to a user interface module indicating that the video sequence should be manually reviewed and tagged with metadata.

2 . The system according to claim 1 , wherein the processor is operative to:

receive the at least one video stream;

compute a plurality of first video signatures for different parts of the at least one video stream;

compare the first video signatures to a database of second video signatures including a plurality video signatures of the video sequence; and

identify the video sequence in the at least one video stream based on a positive match of at least some of the first video signatures with at least some of the video signatures of the video sequence.

3 . The system according to claim 1 , wherein in response to the count exceeding the limit, the processor is also operative to send a content identifier of the video sequence to the user interface module.

4 . The system according to claim 1 , wherein in response to the count exceeding the limit, the processor is also operative to send the video sequence to the user interface module.

5 . The system according to claim 1 , wherein the user interface module is comprised in the system; and the user interface module is operative to output the video sequence for display on a display device.

6 . The system according to claim 1 , wherein the processor is also operative to:

receive a metadata tag from the user interface module; and

link the metadata tag to at least one video signature of the video sequence.

7 . The system according to claim 6 , wherein the metadata tag indicates that the video sequence is part of a series of episodes of a program.

8 . The system according to claim 7 , wherein the processor is also operative, in response to identifying a new occurrence of the video sequence in the at least one video stream, and after the video sequence has previously been tagged with metadata as part of a series of episodes of a program, to search broadcast data to determine an episode identification associated with the new occurrence of the video sequence.

9 . The system according to claim 1 , wherein the user interface module is operative to receive the metadata tag from a user.

10 . A method comprising:

updating a count of how many times a video sequence has been identified in at least one video stream;

checking if the count has exceeded a limit; and

in response to the count exceeding the limit, sending a message to a user interface module indicating that the video sequence should be manualiy reviewed and tagged with metadata.

11 . The method according to claim 10 , further comprising:

receiving the at least one video stream;

computing a plurality of first video signatures for different parts of the at least one video stream;

comparing the first video signatures to a database of second video signatures including a plurality of video signatures of the video sequence; and

identifying the video sequence in the at least one video stream based on a positive match of at least some of the first video signatures with at least some of the video signatures of the video sequence.

12 . The method according to claim 10 , further comprising, in response to the count exceeding the limit, sending a content identifier of the video sequence to the user interface module.

13 . The method according to claim 10 , further comprising, in response to the count exceeding the limit, sending the video sequence to the user interface module.

14 . The method according to claim 10 , further comprising outputting the video sequence for display on a display device.

15 . The method according to claim 10 , further comprising:

receiving a metadata tag from the user interface module; and

linking the metadata tag to at least one video signature of the video sequence.

16 . The method according to claim 15 , wherein the metadata tag indicates that the video sequence is part of a series of episodes of a program.

17 . The method according to claim 16 , further comprising, in response to identifying a new occurrence of the video sequence in the at least one video stream after the video sequence has previously been tagged with metadata as part of a series of episodes of a program, searching broadcast data to determine an episode identification associated with the new occurrence of the video sequence.

18 . The method according to claim 10 , further comprising receiving the metadata tag from a user.

19 . A system comprising a processor; and a memory to store data used by the processor, wherein the processor is operative to:

retrieve a plurality of first video signatures of a video sequence from the memory;

compare the first video signatures of the video sequence to a database of video signatures;

determine that the first video signatures do not match any of the video signatures in the database according to a matching criteria;

add the first video signatures to the database of video signatures as an unknown content item;

retrieve a plurality of second video signatures of a video sequence from the memory;

compare the second video signatures to the database of video signatures yielding a partial match between the second video signatures and the first video signatures;

based on the partial matching between the first video signatures and the second video signatures, determine that the unknown content item includes at least two unknown content items; and

update a labeling of the first video signatures in the database so that the first video signatures which match the second video signatures are labeled as a first unknown content item and a remainder of the first video signatures are labeled as at least one other different second unknown content item.

20 . The system according to claim 19 , wherein: the second video signatures match the first video signatures in a middle section of the unknown content item; and the processor is operative, based on the partial matching between the first video signatures and the second video signatures, to determine that the unknown content item includes at least three unknown content items.
