Abstract

The present invention is directed to a system and method for providing supplemental content during a broadcast. The supplemental content is provided by the operation of an interactive application resident on a receiver. The interactive application is initiated through a trigger that is received during an otherwise standard broadcast. The trigger includes an interactive prompt that is to be displayed during a particular portion of the broadcast. The prompt including a means for enabling receipt of a user input. The user input may be a request for further information.

Claims (29)

1. A method of providing content, comprising:

at a first location, building an interactive application and a number of other interactive applications from information received from a plurality of different vendors;

at the first location, compressing the interactive application and the number of other interactive applications together in a compressed file;

sending the compressed file to a media receiver that is located at a second location apart from the first location via a first communication path;

subsequent to sending the compressed file, sending a media broadcast stream to the media receiver via the first communication path, wherein the interactive application comprises supplemental content related to broadcast content of the media broadcast stream, the supplemental content featuring an item that is also featured in the broadcast content, the broadcast having a trigger comprising processor executable code for an interactive prompt and a pointer to the interactive application wherein the interactive prompt appears during only a portion, but not an entirety, of the media broadcast stream, wherein the interactive prompt is displayed concurrently with broadcast content of the media broadcast stream, the interactive application and the other interactive applications having been decompressed and stored on the receiver, wherein the interactive application has an expiration date associated with the supplemental content, the expiration date provided by an advertiser and specifying a time limit past which the supplemental content in the interactive application will not be displayed;

determining whether a user has actuated the interactive prompt during the display of the interactive prompt by:

if a user selects the interactive prompt during the step of sending the media broadcast and during said portion thereof, receiving a message from the interactive application running on the receiver via a second communication path, the message being received from the interactive application and initiated in response to a first user input and a second user input, the first user input being a selection of the trigger during the media broadcast stream, said trigger causing the interactive application to launch and display an information prompt during the media broadcast stream, the second user input being a selection of the information prompt of the interactive application, the message including an address of the user and sending information to the address of the user, wherein the message indicates that the user is requesting additional information regarding the supplemental content; however

if a user does not select the interactive prompt during the step of sending the media broadcast stream and during said portion thereof or if the user makes a third user input indicating declination of an offer for further information about the item, continuing sending the media broadcast stream via the first communication path but discontinuing sending trigger comprising processor executable code for the interactive prompt.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the trigger uniquely identifies the interactive application.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the address is an email address.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the address is a postal address.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first communication path is the same as the second communication path.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first communication path is different than the second communication path.

7. A content broadcasting system comprising:

a head-end system, located at a first location remotely from a plurality of content receivers at one or more second locations, and configured to:

build an interactive application and a number of other interactive applications from information received from a plurality of different vendors;

compress the interactive application and the number of other interactive applications together in a compressed file;

send the compressed file to a media content receiver of the plurality of content receivers via a first communication path;

subsequent to sending the compressed file, send a media broadcast stream to the media content receiver via the first communication path, wherein the interactive application comprises supplemental content related to broadcast content of the media broadcast stream, the supplemental content featuring an item that is also featured in the broadcast content, the media broadcast having a trigger comprising processor executable code for an interactive prompt and a pointer to the interactive application wherein the interactive prompt appears during only a portion, but not an entirety, of the media broadcast stream, wherein the interactive prompt is displayed concurrently with broadcast content of the media broadcast stream, the interactive application and the other interactive applications having been decompressed and stored on the receiver, wherein the interactive application has an expiration date associated with the supplemental content, the expiration date provided by an advertiser and specifying a time limit past which the supplemental content in the interactive application will not be displayed;

determine whether a user has actuated the interactive prompt during the display of the interactive prompt by:

if a user selects the interactive prompt during the step of sending the media broadcast stream and during said portion thereof, receive a message from the interactive application running on the receiver via a second communication path, the message being received from the interactive application and initiated in response to a first user input and a second user input, the first user input being a selection of the trigger during the media broadcast, said trigger causing the interactive application to launch and display an information prompt during the media broadcast stream, the second user input being a selection of the information prompt of the interactive application, the message including an address of the user and send information to the address of the user, wherein the message indicates that the user is requesting additional information regarding the supplemental content; however

if a user does not select the interactive prompt during the step of sending the media broadcast stream and during said portion thereof or if the user makes a third user input indicating declination of an offer for further information about the item, continue sending the media broadcast stream via the first communication path but discontinue sending trigger comprising processor executable code for the interactive prompt.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein:

the trigger uniquely identifies the interactive application.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein the address is an email address.

10. The system of claim 7 , wherein the address is a postal address.

11. The system of claim 7 , wherein the first communication path is the same as the second communication path.

12. The system of claim 7 , wherein the first communication path is different than the second communication path.
