Abstract

A fiber optic tap system includes a first receiver module having an input port configured to receive an optical fiber. The first receiver module is operable to convert a received optical signal to an electrical signal. A first transmitter module is coupled to receive the electrical signal from the first receiver module and convert the received electrical signal to an optical signal. The first transmitter module has an output port for outputting the optical signal. A first tap module is coupled to receive the electrical signal from the first receiver module.

Claims (22)

1. A fiber optic tap system, comprising:

a circuit board;

a first receiver module mounted on the circuit board and having an input port configured to receive a first optical fiber, the first receiver module being operable to convert a received optical signal to an electrical signal;

a first transmitter module mounted on the circuit board and coupled to receive the electrical signal directly from the first receiver module, the first transmitter module being operable to convert the received electrical signal to an optical signal, the first transmitter module having an output port for receiving a second optical fiber and outputting the optical signal thereto;

a first tap module mounted on the circuit board and coupled to receive the electrical signal output by the first receiver module directly from the first receiver module, the first tap module being operable to convert the received electrical signal to an optical signal, the first tap module having an output port for receiving a third optical fiber and outputting the optical signal thereto;

a second receiver module mounted on the circuit board and having an input port configured to receive a fourth optical fiber, the second receiver module being operable to convert a received optical signal to an electrical signal;

a second transmitter module mounted on the circuit board and coupled to receive the electrical signal from the second receiver module, the second transmitter module being operable to convert the received electrical signal to an optical signal, the second transmitter module having an output port for receiving a fifth optical fiber outputting the optical signal thereto; and

a second tap module mounted on the circuit board and coupled to receive the electrical signal from the second receiver module, the second tap module being operable to convert the received electrical signal to an optical signal, the second tap module having an output port for receiving a sixth optical fiber and outputting the optical signal thereto;

a processor mounted on the circuit board and configured to monitor the first and second receiver modules, the first and second transmitter modules, and the first and second tap modules, and provide an interface to provide data regarding the first and second receiver modules, the first and second transmitter modules, and the first and second tap modules to an external device.

2. The fiber optic tap system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first switch connected to the first receiver module via the first optical fiber;

a second switch connected to the first transmitter module via the second optical fiber; and

a third switch connected to the first tap module via the third optical fiber.

3. The fiber optic tap system of claim 1 , wherein the input port and the output port each include an LC adapter.

4. The fiber optic tap system of claim 1 , wherein the first receiver module and the first transmitter module include small form-factor pluggable ports.

5. The fiber optic tap system of claim 1 , wherein the first tap module includes a small form-factor pluggable port.

6. The fiber optic tap system of claim 1 , wherein the first receiver module and the first transmitter module include quad small form-factor pluggable ports.

7. The fiber optic tap system of claim 1 , wherein the first tap module includes a quad small form-factor pluggable port.

8. The fiber optic tap system of claim 1 , wherein the first receiver module receives optical signals defining a first wavelength and the first transmitter module transmits optical signals defining the first wavelength, and wherein the second receiver module receives optical signals defining a second wavelength and the second transmitter module transmits optical signals defining the second wavelength.

9. The fiber optic tap system of claim 1 , wherein the first receiver module receives optical signals defining first and second wavelengths and the first transmitter module transmits optical signals defining the first and second wavelengths, and wherein the second receiver module receives optical signals defining the first and second wavelengths and the second transmitter module transmits optical signals defining the first and second wavelengths.

10. The fiber optic tap system of claim 1 , wherein the first receiver module, the first transmitter module and the tap module each include a connection point identification device, and wherein the processor is configured to monitor the connection point identification device.

11. The fiber optic tap system of claim 1 , further comprising a connection point identification device and a logic matrix, wherein the first receiver module, the first transmitter module and the connection point identification device are situated in a small form-factor pluggable module, wherein the small form-factor pluggable module is configured to receive fiber optic connectors to connect the input port and the output port to respective optical fibers, and wherein the logic matrix is configured to route the electrical signal output by the first receiver module to the first tap module.
