Concentrated, inhalable antibiotic formulation
A concentrated inhalable formulation of an antibiotic drug such as ciprofloxacin is disclosed. The antibiotic is formulated with sodium acetate and liposome which incorporate antibiotic. The formulation is aerosolized and inhaled for treatment of respiratory tract infections and other medical conditions.
1. An aerosolized composition of particles, comprising:
a free, unencapsulated ciprofloxacin in an aqueous solution with sodium acetate at a pH of 3.2; and
a liposome-encapsulated ciprofloxacin;
wherein the composition is formulated for aerosolized delivery to a human lung and particles of the aerosol have a diameter in a range from about 2 microns to about 4 microns; and
wherein the free, unencapsulated ciprofloxacin is in the aqueous solution at a concentration of about 10 mg/mL or more.
2. A pharmaceutical formulation, comprising:
a free, unencapsulated ciprofloxacin in an aqueous solution with sodium acetate at a pH of 3.2; and
a liposome-encapsulated ciprofloxacin;
wherein the composition is formulated for aerosolized delivery to a human lung; and
wherein the free, unencapsulated ciprofloxacin is in the aqueous solution at a concentration of about 10 mg/mL or more.
