Abstract

An apparatus in accordance with the invention includes a window covering actuation mechanism and a gearbox assembly configured to electromechanically operate the window covering actuation mechanism. A pull cord is configured to receive “cord gestures” from a user. These “cord gestures” may include one or more of pull sequences, pull durations, numbers of pulls, durations between pulls, and strength of pulls. In certain embodiments, “cord gestures” may also be defined by pull direction. A controller receives the cord gestures and translates the cord gestures into commands for controlling the gearbox assembly. A corresponding method is also disclosed herein.

Claims (27)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a window covering actuation mechanism;

a gearbox assembly electromechanically controlling and operating the window covering actuation mechanism;

a pull cord operably connected to the gearbox assembly receiving cord gestures from a user, wherein the cord gestures are defined by pull sequences, numbers of pulls, strength of pulls, and combinations thereof; and

a controller receiving the cord gestures and translating the cord gestures into operational commands to control and operate the gearbox assembly.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the cord gestures are further defined by at least one of pull durations, or durations between pulls.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the cord gestures are further defined by pull direction.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein a first cord gesture of the cord gestures causes the window covering actuation mechanism to tilt slats in a first direction and a second cord gesture of the cord gestures causes the window covering actuation mechanism to tilt the slats in a second direction.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein a first cord gesture of the cord gestures causes the window covering actuation mechanism to open a window blind and a second gesture of the cord gestures causes the window covering actuation mechanism to close the window blind.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a switching mechanism to convert the cord gestures into electrical signals.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the switching mechanism is configured to understand cord gestures in a single direction.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the switching mechanism is configured to understand cord gestures in multiple directions.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the pull cord is further configured to supply power to a battery, the battery powering at least one of the gearbox assembly or the controller.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising an electrical conductor and connector integrated into the pull cord.

11. A method of actuating a window covering comprising:

receiving, at a pull cord, cord gestures from a user, wherein receiving the cord gestures comprises defining cord gestures by pull sequences, numbers of pulls, strength of pulls, and combinations thereof;

using a controller to translate the cord gestures into commands for controlling a gearbox assembly operably connected to the pull cord; and

electromechanically operating a window covering actuation mechanism using the gearbox assembly.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein receiving cord gestures comprises defining cord gestures by at least one of pull durations or durations between pulls.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein receiving cord gestures comprises determining a cord gesture pull direction.

14. The method of claim 11 , further comprising receiving a first cord gesture to cause the window covering actuation mechanism to tilt slats in a first direction and receiving a second cord gesture to cause the window covering actuation mechanism to tilt the slats in a second direction.

15. The method of claim 11 , further comprising receiving a first cord gesture to cause the window covering actuation mechanism to open a window blind and receiving a second gesture to cause the window covering actuation mechanism to close the window blind.

16. The method of claim 11 , further comprising converting the cord gestures into electrical signals using a switching mechanism.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein converting the cord gestures comprises detecting the cord gestures in a single direction.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein converting the cord gestures comprises detecting the cord gestures in multiple directions.

19. The method of claim 11 , further comprising supplying, by way of the pull cord, power to a battery, the battery powering at least one of the gearbox assembly or the controller.

20. The method of claim 11 , further comprising supplying power through the pull cord by way of an electrical conductor and connector integrated therein.
